I think a lot of folks are already there. The “Establishment” has managed to squander all their deference in the last 10 years with all the lies that have been proven.
The Establishment has been horrible for at least a century, but the oligarchs used to be able to control the flow of information and make the dark truths that were rumored about “conspiracy theories” and thus marginalized. The Internet didn’t remove the gatekeepers, but it did allow the theorists to become loud enough to matter to normies. I’ll freely admit I’d heard many of those theories and dismissed them, but the Internet made the dissemination of the real story possible.
So I don’t think it was possible that we could have kept our old style high-trust society. But the looting has exponentially accelerated as the money flowing out of DC increased and the Democrats realized they could shadow finance themselves with Federal largess, and only now is the tip of the iceberg of fraud become visible to normies.

Well said. It reminds me of visiting my daughter and son-in-law in suburban Milwaukee, and realizing that one important fact about their town, a working class area (West Allis), was that if you got too out of line, your neighbors would likely pull you aside and say “Knock it off–we have a society to maintain here.”. We apparently need to do the same with the DFL, as society can be incredibly quickly lost–ask anyone who remembers Germany in the 1930s, for example.
