Walzing Out Of The Room
By Mitch Berg
I started hearing blips last week that Governor Walz was going to get defenestrated from the Governor’s race. The big donors that run the DFL were worried he’s going to be a drag on the ticket.
It got a little more official last night:
Reports say Amy Klobuchar may get in the governor’s race.
This is, of course pretty brilliant for the DFL. Rumor has it they want to run on an “Anti-Fraud” platform next year. Klobuchar hasn’t been implicated – so she’ll make that a little less incongruous. And if she loses, she keeps her Senate seat, and if she wins, Walz appoints her successor.
The only two risks?
- The GOP getting its act together and running a well-funded, universally supported candidate that can deliver the right message with enough force to get past mid-Minnesotans Fudds and their attachment to two generations of the Klobuchar name, and
- The Feds bringing in a lot more indictments that make, er, other parts of the ticket squirm a little.
I’m thinking “B” is more likely, but I’ve love to be suprised.

Firstly, if Amy gets into the Gubernatorial Race, it’s to add Governor to her resume for a 2028 Presidential run. Pay attention to who gets the LG nod.
Secondly, if Amy runs and wins, I think she resigns her seat as close to her swearing in as possible, and then she appoints her own successor. Walz has to be promised something in Washington. Possibly as Amy’s direct successor and the opportunity to run for re-election in 2028 in the Special Election. Possibly some unnamed Secretariat starting in 2029. It’ll be interesting, and telling, how much the DFL spends the next 10 months trying to scapegoat Walz in an effort to save 2026. They won’t burn him completely if the plan is to send him to Washington DC in January, but if the polls suck, I expect Carlbom to tell Timmy, “I’m altering the Deal. Pray I don’t alter it any further.”

universally supported candidate
In line with all the rest of the complaints about Republican candidates over the years. Problem is that I never see any suggested candidates that would have this universal support.
Suggestions? Maybe even explain why?
