So, which ivy league school did the designer go to?
My guess would be Harvard, Princeton or Yale….but it could be Brown. On second thought, probably Brown.

It was a World War, so there must have been some country with cactus plants and horsemen in wide-brimmed hats where fighting was involved. Or maybe it’s an American southwesterner coming home after being discharged. He rode his horse all the way from New Jersey so he had time to grow back his facial hair.
Look, I’m just trying to be fair to the designer!

It’s worth noting that they’re selling an abridged version, so the same violence done to the text–a recent college English grad thinking xe’s a better writer than Remarque–is also being done to the cover art. I learned long ago to avoid abridged versions as if they were contaminated by Ebola, because nothing can kill the love of learning like reading ham-fisted writing by a kid with a good GPA but no life experience.

Look like an AI algorithm at work . . . watch out for your jobs, editors!

Bike: Yep. So it seems. I’m going to guess it’s some copy farm taking advantage of Remarque’s copyright expiring.
UMMP: Yuuup.

I don’t have hard numbers, but I estimate the average IQ of America has gone down at least one full decile since 1965.
What happened in 1965?
