  1. It is interesting to use Google Maps to see some of those Detroit neighborhoods. In a typical block there might be lots for about 15 houses per side. Where there could be 30 houses there might be only half still standing. Plenty have been razed and never replaced. Some of the houses have been gone so long that there are mature trees standing where a house once sat.

Wait until liberals find out those not so densely packed neighborhoods have huge yards!

  2. A few years back, when then-Governor Rick Snyder went to clean up some of those empty lots in Detroit, they found a body. No kidding.

I’ve also done the Google Maps thing that reader15 notes, there as well as in places like Gary and Chicago’s South Side, and the thing that strikes me is that if they could only get some level of control over crime and get those lots mowed and rezoned for larger lots capable of having a real garage and yard, they’d have an excellent chance of attracting young families. Sticking point (besides the crime and such) is that sometimes 100 years of history puts some “interesting things” in the land. My grandmother’s neighbors in Brookfield found some fool had put cadmium waste out by their garage, for example.

That noted, since it makes a lot more sense than what we’re doing now, it of course has no chance of happening in America’s leftist cities, I’m guessing.
