For All You Long Betters

Yet another friend of the blog writes:

I read speculation that soon, all states will be divided into blue urban areas and red rural areas. But, I think the Democrats are losing more voters than that. Today on the 5, I heard a couple black passengers talking about “those damn liberals, who just take and take” and continued on, blaming liberals for the bad, expensive bus service we now have in the Twin Cities. I smiled. I can be an optimist at times.

Lincoln once said you can’t fool all of the people all of the time.  I have to think at least some portion of the left’s big ethnic and social plantation is going to figure it out someday.

  1. In parts of the Twin Cities that developed right after WW II, it was common for developers to impose restrictive covenants – no tar paper shacks, no outhouses, no buildings less than X cost or Y square feet – as an attempt to make a “nice” development in the days before there were zoning ordinances. This had the effect of screening out poor people who couldn’t afford to build nice houses and thus was discriminatory but also socially acceptable.

Ah, but some of those covenants also said “may not be occupied by colored people.” That’s racist. Yes, but the restrictions also were a proxy for behavior. Nobody wanted to build a nice new house and wind up living Granny and Uncle Jed. White trash was as unwelcome as Black trash or Hispanic trash or any other trash. And the stereotype reputation of Blacks in those days included poor behavior. The restrictions were similar to “No Irish” or “No Chinese” and stemmed from the same source.

Ironically, time may have done more to integrate those neighborhoods than the civil rights act. The guys you overheard on the bus weren’t trash, they were middle-class people with middle-class values, same as yours and mine, all of us deploring the idiocy of the Left. We still want to keep trash out of our neighborhoods, it’s just that we don’t that word with people in our social class, whatever their color.

And since this blog is all about guns, let me hypothesize that the reason nobody cares about Black-on-Black shooting in the hood is they’re trash so we expect bad behavior from them. It’s not about race. It’s about class.
