They’re Baaaaaaaack

“Youth Against War and Racism” wants to help guarantee future war and entrench further racism, by nagging – again – the Saint Paul School Board to restrict military recruiters on Saint Paul school campuses:

Youth Against War and Racism (YAWR), the Twin Cities metro area student group, asks for your support in urging the St. Paul and Minneapolis School Boards to restrict military recruiters’ access to high schools.

Under the No Child Left Behind Act, schools allow recruiters access to schools, but YAWR asks that recruiters be restricted to Career Centers where school counselors can supervise the recruiters’ contact with students. They do not want recruiters in school cafeterias, at sporting and other extra-curricular events or elsewhere around schools and students.

The military has had large presences at School Board meetings in the Public Commentary times, and has been allowed to freely advocate for their position with school boards.

Please come support the students who actually attend the schools and live in the community, in advocating for their position. Also: Please phone or e-mail the School Board in your district with your concerns.

A little bird tells me Superintendent Carstarphen would like this whole issue to just go away – that she’s sick to death of board time being taken up by these yowling little patricians-in-training and the college-age-and-older lifestyle leftists who are basically using them as a mouthpiece (to be fair, I’m jamming that last bit into her mouth – but to her credit, she would, I’m told, rather actually deal with education than this particular vanity issue).
Last time this came up, Swiftee and I went to the meeting and spoke.  If you care about the St. Paul Schools, it’d be great to have some more people there next time.

  1. Is it really a restriction when what they are really asking for is that the recruiters follow the same guidelines as all other Post Secondary opportunities. I am all for everyone having an opportunity to visit with students, be it recruiters (my 10th grader at Central is very interested in military service and I have told him to visit the recruiters to find out what his options are and what he needs to do academically to meet those goals) or academic institutions.

I do NOT support added or extra restrictions, but I do support the desire for those parents and student to see that recruiters follow the same rules and guidelines as College recruiters.

I think it is a fair and reasonable compromise and am unsure why there would be any objection to it.

  2. Joining the military isn’t like going to college so the recruiters shouldn’t be treated as if it were.

For many young, directionless people, going to college is just a way to put off making a decision about life for a while. Such a person could theoretically get a worthwhile degree that starts her on a career, but she could equally as likely major in “Women’s Studies” and wind up pouring coffee at Caribou with $80,000 in loans. Not to mention minorities scooped up in affirmative action programs by colleges needing to meet quotas, who then fail to ensure their minority students even graduate.

Joining the military is one of the best ways for young, directionless people to learn a skill, see the world, gain a few years of maturity and get paid for it. Time enough to go to college when you get out (or even while you’re in, on Uncle Sam’s dime). It’s not for everyone. But for those who need a little direction and discipline in their youth, it’s valuable experience.

  3. I chose college right out of high school instead of the service. Worst decision of my life. Have several friends who enlisted first (or did reserves/guards) and were much better for it.

My words to the little spoiled kids of St Paul…..don’t like the armed forces……don’t join.

  4. Flash these little Marxists are not interested in compromise. They want the military off school grounds completely and won’t be satisfied until that happens. Giving them this interim gesture will only embolden them.

  5. Swfitee, twice in one day you are wrong again. I’m pretty sure that they would be content with the same gudelines as any post secondary opportunity. Yes, they are asking for the moon, but would probably accept the compromise. It is the other side that is playing the hardball game. I challenge you at the next meeting to offer up and support my proposal Prove me wrong!

BTW, How many kids do you have at Central, I have two.

  6. Chuck:

“I chose college right out of high school instead of the service. Worst decision of my life.”

One of the many decisions in my life that I regret as well. As it turned out, I didn’t grow up till I was in my 30’s. i am convinced the service would have changed that. Expecially watching my Oldest son evolve. He is twice the man at 21 that I was at 30

  7. Chuck reconsidered: “I chose college right out of high school instead of the service. Worst decision of my life.”

I agree. With any luck you would have gotten your fool head blown off and there’d be one fewer wingnut posting nonsense on Mitch’s blog.

  8. Flash congratulated: “Swfitee, twice in one day you are wrong again.”

    Woohoo! Record low!

  9. “Swfitee, twice in one day you are wrong again. I’m pretty sure that..”

Well, since you have met the personalities involved in public, and had the chance to listen and speak with them at length I suppose…wait a minute….. “Last time this came up, Swiftee and I went to the meeting and spoke.”…

We must have missed you at the meeting Flash, because you were certainly there right? I mean if you’re here calling me wrong without having had any first hand knowledge “I’m pretty sure” sounds just like “I’m talking out of my ass” which is something we expect from Moonbats and Asshats (and yes, AssClowns too Shirley), not from level headed “centerists”.

    Pffft.

How about *I* challenge *you* to show up and get the facts from the source before you shoot your mouth (or run your fingers in this case) again?

    See ya there buddy.

  10. Just to be clear, Swiftee. You support the right of the recruiters to be there, and agree that they should follow the same guidelines as all other post secondary entities that visit the school. And that that YAWR just once them out, completely and totally, no other options acceptable.
