Given The Way Higher Education Seems To be Going…

By Mitch Berg

I think I’d be more surprised if this hadn’t happened:

An anti-semitic message that included a swastika was found etched into the wall of a bathroom at Columbia University on Thursday, just two days after a noose was discovered hanging from the door of a professor at Teachers College.

In a message to the Columbia community, President Lee Bollinger said he was saddend by the second incident of hate in a week.

Not counting Ahmadinejad’s speech, natch.

Oops, looks like you missed Bollinger’s remarks introducing Ahmadinejad and tearing him a new one. Here’s part:

“In a December 2005 state television broadcast, you described the Holocaust as a “fabricated” “legend.” One year later, you held a two-day conference of Holocaust deniers.

For the illiterate and ignorant, this is dangerous propaganda. When you come to a place like this, this makes you, quite simply, ridiculous. You are either brazenly provocative or astonishingly uneducated.”

    Pansy PC academic.

    Here is Bollinger’s full introduction:

  2. Mitch Says:

No, I caught the remarks. I agreed with their sentiments, but disagreed with the invitation in the first place, and the way Bollinger placed the comments (lunatic guest or not, it’s just rude to rip the guy before he speaks at the event – especially an event to which your institution invited him).

A for concept, D- for execution.

  3. angryclown Says:

Hate to flank you on your right, Mitch, but Angryclown isn’t feeling all that bad about Ahmadinejad being treated rudely. He should be grateful for any U.S. greeting that isn’t attached to a cruise missile.

  4. Mitch Says:

    I’m telling Marsha!

  5. Master of None Says:

The clown wants to invade Pakistan AND attack Iran?

Must be hard marching off to war in over sized shoes.

  6. angryclown Says:

Who wants to attack countries that actually have WMDs? Maybe Holland next?

  7. Master of None Says:

Who wants to attack countries that actually have WMDs?

Iran has WMD’s? Is that a slam dunk?

  8. angryclown Says:

What, you guys are all lefties and I’m the right-wing kook today?

Yeah, Master, there’s reason to believe Iran will develop a nuclear weapon if they continue on the path they’re on. And we know for certain that Iran sponsors terrorists who target the U.S. and Israel.

Then there’s Iraq. Compare and contrast.

  9. Master of None Says:

As long as you think the threat is eminent and you’re not rushing into anything unilaterally.

Oh, and because you have frequently used the “chicken hawk” argument in the past, I’m going to insist that you enlist immediately, before you continue with any of this pro-war talk. Seems only fair.

  10. angryclown Says:

Maybe you can find that comment where I “used the `chicken hawk’ argument in the past,” Master of Bation. You know, so people can be certain you’re not making shit up.

    Seems only fair.

  11. Master of None Says:

As there is no method for searching comments, I’ll make this concession

Change “you have frequently used …” to “you lefty clowns have frequently used …”

    Agree?

  12. buzz Says:

“Yeah, Master, there’s reason to believe Iran will develop a nuclear weapon if they continue on the path they’re on. And we know for certain that Iran sponsors terrorists who target the U.S. and Israel.”

Roll back the clock 7 years. What is different then about Iraq then that you couldn’t make the same statement?

  13. Chuck Says:

Well, Saddamn was paying $15,000 to the family of any one who would murder a Jew.

  14. Slash Says:

I’m with A.C. in the Bronco today. No more nuancy pussy-footing around with the Enemy.

Rudy’s gonna kick ass and take guns. The whole damn Caliphate.

No more cutting and running like Reagan did in Lebanon.

No more leaving dictators with WMDs, like Bush I and Clinton did with Saddam or Bush II did with Pakistan.

If Saudi Arabia is holding telethons for Hamas, we’re coming for you, Faisal!

Rudy’s gonna get Louima on your ass!

  15. Troy Says:

I heard much of the debate, and I must say that President Lee C. Bollinger’s remarks look a lot stronger alone than they did in the context of the “debate”. That may be why the link angryclown supplied is not a transcript of both sides.

I wonder how it was viewed by those who are predisposed toward Ahmadinejad (or even neutral)?

Even IF they were to see the whole debate, I think LCB looks like a jerk and Ahmadinejad looks like a reasonable world leader explaining away LCB’s accusations and speaking at length on the very moderate policies of his country. Sure, they were all lies, but it seems LCB had ADD that day and never addressed them.

  16. angryclown Says:

Angryclown was quarrelling with Mitch’s implication that Bollinger worries about trifles like swastikas and nooses on campus, while rolling over like a PC buttboy for Ahmadinejad.
