A Little Unfair

The “CrimeWatchMpls” twitter account – which is one of the few actual accurate and current sources of information on crime in Minneapolis – found a photo of a group of Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) staffers with their recent awards from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).
You might say that crowd doesn’t look especially diverse.
I beg to differ.
Some of them are from Macalester; some, Saint Thomas; others, the U of M School of Journalism
Hope we’ve settled that.

Slightly more diverse than the St. Paul City Council. There may be a couple of Y chromosomes in that picture, though my guess is they are recessive.

At the very, very end of this lengthy page, where MPR discloses its sources of financing, it reads:

the shell game is that NPR receives much of its revenue from subscribers like MPR who in turn milk local, state, and federal governments for cash then use it to pay for NPR shows – suddenly the government sponsorship is much more than 1%. Oh lets don’t forget the tax breaks that for profit radio/tv stations don’t get.
This tick is deeply embedded in the flesh of our governments.

YOU’RE KILLING (News coverage, Elmo, Prairie Home Compan…er, wait. They killed that one).
And that “1-2%” figure excludes lots of NIH and other grants that go to stations to purchase programming, not to mention the free studio space at colleges and universities where most public stations are located

I’d say Jenny Craig might consider becoming a corporate sponsor.
