Konrad
By Mitch Berg
KSTP-AM program director Steve Konrad apparently smacked into a mattress on I94 last night while riding his motorcycle:
The crash happened about 6 p.m. on eastbound I-94 at Western Avenue. The mattress, left or lost by another eastbound vehicle, was in the left-hand lane, State Patrol Lt. Eric Roeske said.
A 2007 Ford Expedition was able to swerve and miss the mattress, but the 2004 Yamaha hit it and crashed, Roeske said.
Steven J. Konrad, 46, was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul. He was wearing a helmet, according to the State Patrol.
So pony up your prayers, hopes, crossed fingers, karmic imprecations or whatever your worldview calls for.
UPDATE: According to David Brauer, Konrad is still plenty critical, with brain trauma and a bunch of broken bones – but on the doctors’ scale of 1 (“best”) to 20 (really bad) for measuring brain trauma, Steve is a “4”, and is responding to pain.

I hope he recovers. Stupid accidents like that waiting to ambush riders were a significant reason I sold my motorcycle (AKA donorcycle, helmet not withstanding).

I may not like how he’s running that station, but I dearly hope he recovers well and quickly!

Like the stinkin’ deer weren’t enough?

I wish Steve a speedy and full recovery.
Man I really try to avoid the freeways around town whenever possible. One thing I try hard to do is keep some distance behind the vehicle in front of me. That way you increase your reaction time if the other driver takes evasive action against an obstacle in the road. I’ve had cars/trucks in front of me with their exhaust system dragging and near falling off. I’ve dodged more than one muffler and tailpipe lying in the road. And boy that really pisses me off!!! On a motorcycle you really need to be ready for this kind of stuff. I live rural and travel many backroads, so there is a concern about deer, coons, skunks, possum, cats, dogs, cows (can you believe that cows?), on and on.
