How The Lowly Have Risen

By Mitch Berg

Who wrote this:

How the mighty have fallen. New York Times, I weep for you.

Was it:

  1. John Hinderaker?
  2. Me?
  3. Rush Limbaugh?
  4. Bill O’Riley?

The answer, of course, is “none of the above”.  It was liberal former NYC mayor Ed Koch, in the Jerusalem Post.

“Liberal” Ed Koch? You’re a little out of touch, Mitch. Koch has endorsed Al D’Amato, Rudy Giuliani, George W. Bush… The last person who said the words “liberal” and “Ed Koch” in the same sentence was wearing a leisure suit.

Try “neocon.” You know, like yourself. The group of former liberals who like getting us into foreign wars. And losing them.

  2. Kermit Says:

Mitch is Jewish? And here I thought he was Norwegian.

  3. Chuck Says:

    Ed Koch is very liberal.

And if you don’t think “neocon” isn’t an anti-semetic slur, type in the words “Cindy Sheehen Israel” into Google and look at the first site that comes up. I won’t link to it heew, as I doubt Mitch wants neo-Nazi web sites promoted on his blog.

  4. angryclown Says:

Chuck, I don’t have the time to untangle your particular pathology. But I’d suggest that if someone wants to find out about neocons, “neocon” might just be a better Google search term than “Cindy Sheehen Israel.” (Or “Chuck bonehead doofus”, for that matter.)

And if you think Ed Koch is “very liberal,” than you’re either far to the right of Darth Vader or you don’t really know what you’re talking about. Angryclown doesn’t care to find out. You’re not very interesting, Chuck.

  5. Chuck Says:

AC, here’s the quote from one of the web sites promoting your side. Again, I won’t put the link here as I doubt Mitch wants left wing/right wing hate groups promoted here.

“Neo-Cons Are An Elite Group of Zionist Jewish String-Pullers

    Interlocking relationships of Neocons

An elite group of Zionist Jews inter-marry and infest government. They call themselves Neo-cons, and their sole purpose is directing US policy. Most are dual-citizens and none of them have ever served in the US military.”

  6. angryclown Says:

See, that’s where you make your mistake, Chuck. Whoever wrote that is not “my side,” but rather “an idiot.” Like you Chuck. A different variety of idiot, to be sure. But, like you, an idiot nonetheless.

One might wonder at your familiarity with nutty antisemitic web sites, Chuck. But again, you’re not an interesting person.

  7. Mitch Says:

this from a guy in polka-dotted bloomers.

Try “neocon.” You know, like yourself.

    Wrong-o! I’m a paleocon.

The group of former liberals who like getting us into foreign wars. And losing them.

We haven’t lost any wars. We haven’t won Iraq yet. There’s a huge difference.

But we’ll touch on that later.

  8. Yossarian Says:

I think it’s fair to say we won the Iraq war, but securing Iraqi peace has been our stumbling block, although we’re making progress in that arena. Not that AC would ever see such progress.

  9. Chuck Says:

Chuck thinks about bating Angry Clown but will respect the blogmaster today.

  10. angryclown Says:

It’s “baiting,” Chuckwagon. One hopes you don’t use Mitch’s blog for ‘bating.

  11. Yossarian Says:

Yeah, AC, you of all commenters don’t have a high horse to sit upon when it comes to spelling and grammatical errors here. Mmmkay?

  12. Chuck Says:

I’m spelling impaired. It’s a disability. That makes me a victim who deserves special considerations. I think ADA requires Mitch to install a spell checker so people like me have all the same access as those who are traditionally spelled.

  13. buzz Says:

Ed Koch is more of a throw back liberal. One of those with liberal social ideas, but still loves the country. I can understand the confusion, as those are endangered. Neocon is a word that means “People I disagree with, more than likely Jewish” when used by the new Liberal.

  14. Alois vom Lugers Says:

Actually, to extrapolate on what buzz has said above, Ed Koch is what they used to call a “Kennedy Democrat.” You know, a Democrat who loves his country above all else and isn’t secretly playing into the hands of the enemy because he figures it will save his bacon in the end.

I lived in New York when Koch was mayor, and he is a fine man (even if I myself am not a Democrat).

  15. flash Says:

    Main Entry: neo·con·ser·va·tive
    Pronunciation: “nE-O-k&n-‘s&r-v&-tiv
    Function: noun
1 : a former liberal espousing political conservatism
2 : a conservative who advocates the assertive promotion of democracy and U.S. national interest in international affairs including through military means

This was an interesting read as well:

But Mitch, you can call yourself whatever you want, but it appears to me you fit the neocon definiton much more closely.

  16. angryclown Says:

Nice job, Flash. But apparently you missed the close link between the word “neocon” and “Protocols of the Elders of Zion.” According to midwestern wingnuts – who certainly know from antisemitism, after all – “neocon” is a vicious slur.

  17. Troy Says:

Wow! That definition is pretty concise. Short, sweet, and written as if the definition were well known and carved in stone.

And then the linked article makes that definition look both inadequate and shallow.

Add to that these links of diverse origin:

    http://www.csmonitor.com/specials/neocon/neocon101.html
    http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/003/000tzmlw.asp

    http://www.antiwar.com/orig/lind1.html
    http://www.lewrockwell.com/grigg/grigg-w11.html

that read as if they know the answer to “what is a neocon?”. From all this input I get the notion that the answer to this question is a bit more complicated than the three line definition.

I guess the definition fits your purpose, flash, since you did use it. It does seem like a stretch, though, and one used only to “justify” calling Mitch a ‘neocon’.

Score? *shrug* I don’t think so.

  18. Troy Says:

angryclown, do you mean to say that calling someone a “neocon” is far from a “vicious slur”, but instead is to be appreciated like a precious gift, regardless of whether the definition applies?

Well then, angryclown, you are a neocon.

No need to thank me, just send money. 🙂

  19. Fulcrum Says:

Chuck…Firefox ver. 2.0.0.4…built in spell check.

  20. Troy Says:

I second Fulcrum’s suggestion. It makes misspelling words…harder, but not impossible. 🙂
