For perspective, I believe that the Minneapolis PD alone is short 2-300 officers, so if one extrapolates across the state, this is a drop in the bucket of what is needed.
If we really want to improve criminal justice, moreover, what we need to do is to insist that a far larger portion of allegations get an actual investigation. That means hiring not just ticket-writers, but people qualified to be detectives. Given that a 2017 Star-Tribune study found that only 20% of sexual assault allegations got even a good basic investigation, I’m guessing that our heads might spin if we were to see how many cases got solved if we actually hired and paid investigators to do that critical work.

But the Lt Gov says every Minnesotan deserves to live in a safe community, so we are hiring more police.

Sorry, but this is all wrong.
It’s not an issue of numbers as in numbers of policemen or detectives. It’s defeating what’s termed Restorative Justice policies. Releasing black criminals and aggressively prosecuting and jailing white policemen are key aspects of these policies (yeah, I could phrase that more euphemistically but it wouldn’t make the point that needs to made). Look at HennCo’s prosecuting attorney’s comments or Penny’s.
Criminals need to be incarcerated for the sake of the rest of us. It’s really just that simple.
