Re your sentiment expressed over the weekend:
I mean, saving more money is good for you – might make you a conservative, eventually, actually.
And unless you save that money in a coffee can in your closet, it’ll go to a bank, which’ll circulate the money around, further helping those who are participating in the economy to grow things.
Not sure that’s quite the “own” you think it is.
Even less so than dumping Twitter to join “BlueSky”, really.

As someone was telling me last night how impressed they were that the upgrade on their phone didn’t completely disable it, we talked about how much the people in the US like to spend. From planned obsolescence that many accept to keeping up with the latest fads and fashion, people spend, often more than they make, and then scream unfair. And I see that from people on all sides of the political spectrum, but it is generational. I don’t see it so much from the Silent Generation, of whom are getting to be fewer on this planet. But Baby Boomers on down. And then especially those who live among an abundance of choice who do not exercise that, but go with what everyone else has, regardless of quality, cost, etc. Gone, apparently, are the days when parents (like mine from the Silent Generation btw) took the kids out and demonstrated restraint in shopping around, understanding the value of something, depositing money in the bank with the right interest rate and moving it around as needed, and not giving in to every impulse, but waiting to see if it is still desirable in a week, two or even 6 months.
So, if Trump can get at least part of the population past impulsive consumerism and saving money we all will be in much better shape. I encourage “Prez” to make this the in thing to do!

From where do you dredge up these, um, personalities, Mitch? I almost feel bad for them except you pretty much do nothing more than just let them talk.

If you choose to live a frugal lifestyle because you can afford it as a political protest, that is your right under a conservative administration.
If you are forced to live a frugal lifestyle because you cannot afford any other, that is the consequence of living iunder a liberal administration.

I believe Rose Wilder Lane (Laura Ingalls Wilder’s daughter) did a similar thing to protest the New Deal back in 1933. Did about the same good. The thing that makes this worse is that Lane was just protesting taxes and spending, while this guy wants to make the economy worse for everyone. So hopefully he gets a face to face meeting with some people who get laid off, and he can explain why he wanted them to go hungry and lose their homes.
Fortunately, capital formation benefits the economy, too, so he’s not just vicious, but impotent. Thank you, Ludwig von Mises.
