Connect The Dots!

Salem Communications – which owns both Townhall.com, America’s leading online conservative clearinghouse and Salem Radio, which in turns owns the radio station on which my radio program airs – has apparently purchased leading conservative site Hot Air, owned by Michelle Malkin and which employs my radio colleague Ed Morrissey, and its million daily pageviews.

Someone notify the media! The barbarians are at the gates!

  1. That would be the same Salem Communications which runs the financial scam artists programming…some of which has also aired on local Salem stations.

  2. Because you said so, DG?

You’ve been taken to task multiple times over your unsubstantiated accusations, yet you still don’t learn.

  3. oh DG quit your bitching, advertising is advertising, beggers can’t be choosers in tough economic times, once the economy rebounds the crazys will go. How’s Air America doing?

  4. Dog,
You strike me similar to the guy who, back in my radio days, called the studio to complain that one of our ads was “misleading”.

He said, words to the effect of this: he wanted to get an explanation or he would contact the FCC and that *I* (the effing night disk jockey) might lose my broadcaster license.

    The offense?

The commercial we aired was for a regional touring band that was hitting one of the clubs in our both our Iowa market and Minnesota market. The ad mentioned that they had been to Germany.

The guy went to one of the gigs and asked one of the guys in the band about Germany gigs, where they toured, speaking the language, and so on.

The guy he talked to had not been to Germany. Different lineup… so the guy got embarrassed at the “scam” and wanted to take it out on the station that played the ad again.

Maybe, Dog Gone, you’ve spent too much time around Peeve and he’s rubbing off on you… you’re having a hard time sticking to the point.

[Shatner] “…like a poor marksman, you keep missing the target!” [/Shatner]

  5. That would be the same Salem Communications which runs the financial scam artists programming…some of which has also aired on local Salem stations.

Let’s go over the statement clause by clause:

That would be the same Salem Communications which runs

The word you are looking for is “ran”. KYCR allegedly ran the Kiely show. The moment any wrongdoing emerged, Salem tubed the show. Just like we’re supposed to.

the financial scam artists programming…some of which has also aired on local Salem stations.

As re the Kiely show – asked and answered. Salem Twin Cities exercised its duty to remove programs that were alleged to be legally hinky.

As re the other allegations? Refer back to the list of caveats I gave you off-line. I stand by all of them with implacable confidence.

  6. Ben Dover queried: “How’s Air America doing?”

‘Bout as well as the “Half-Hour News Hour,” Benji. Talk radio’s a notch below the circus on the show biz ladder. Liberals will just have to content themselves with film and T.V. You kooks have the medium for people who don’t have jobs or can’t sleep at night.

  7. The last time I listened to Air America they were hocking some homeopathic crap.
George Noory interviews people who had sex with Big Foot and got kidnapped by space aliens. For content. Yet his advertising is above board.
All I know is that it’s always a good time to buy gold!

  8. Right wingers crowing about their dominance in talk radio reminds me of this slice of “Simpsons” dialogue:

Bart: And, now they’re talking about holding me back in the fourth grade
    if I don’t shape up.
Otto: That’s it? Hey, relax, man! It could end up being the best thing
that ever happened to ya. I got held back in the fourth grade myself,
twice! Look at me, man! Now I drive the school bus!

Well done wingers; now you drive the school bus.

  9. Townhall, Salem Radio, Michelle Malking, HotAir and Ed Morrissey.

    The only relevant question is-

When do they announce that Sarah Palin will be the new president of the company with Michelle Bachmann as media spokeswoman?

  10. How’s that Air America thing workin’ out for y’all, Timmy?
D’ya think Franken went into it because he thought it would work or was he totally into it for the ripping off kids benny?

  11. reminds me of this slice of “Simpsons” dialogue:

You quote “The Simpsons” to make rhetorical points?

    What next? Star Trek?

Just saying – thanks. You’ve ridiculed yourself, saving me the trouble.

“Don’t have a cow, man”. Sheesh.

  12. That totally irrelevant, forced reference to The Simpsons that only one person found funny but went on forever reminds me of a Family Guy quote. Actually, nevermind, it just reminds me of Family Guy.

I wish the Hot Air guys the best, but I have to admit – I really, really, hope Salem keeps their paws off the site and lets them be themselves. Salem’s radio station websites have got to be the ugliest, most bloated things I’ve seen online. Others like CCM and Crosswalk are a maze of pop-ups and blaring music. I hope their skeptical conservative tone fits in where Glen Beck is played on their stations, Sarah Palin’s book is hawked before you read anything else, and non-religious people (like AP) are blamed for a host of things on their programs.

  13. AC the Half-hour news hour was a SHOW, Air America was a NETWORK that was supposed to launch national progressive movement to kick Bush out of office in the 2004 elections. If that’s the best comparison you can come up with I’d say I won that one.
talk radio’s a notch below the circus on the show biz ladder. Liberals will just have to content themselves with film and T.V.

hmm… well I would actually think that the whole point of talk radio is to combat liberal on film and TV. Look at all the liberal networks on cable TV (MSNBC,CNN,Headline News) and then there is the Fox News channel that practically outdraws all the other cable news networks COMBINED. Thank God for the free market, tell me if you were an advertiser what show would you rather have your commerical air on Maddow/Olbermann or Beck?

<iYou kooks have the medium for people who don’t have jobs or can’t sleep at night.

Actually it has been scientifically proven that talk radio listeners are generally more well-informed and intelligent than their NPR and nightly news counterparts. Mitch could you cite that study please.

  14. Shows fail. Bad shows – like HHNH – and even good ones (“Daily Show” didn’t have great ratings its first year or two; it it’d been on broadcast, it’d have been tubed inside a season).

Networks? They don’t. Unless they’re Air America. Or Nova M, which made Air America look like Clear Channel.

  15. In reference to Mitch’s title, I’m surprised Flash hasn’t weighed in yet on this is yet more evidence of Scafienet at work pulling the strings behind the vast right-wing conspiracy.

I agree with those who hope that Salem and Townhall specifically don’t just try to fold Hot Air into their existing web structures, which frankly are pretty clunky.

  16. All I know is that it’s always a good time to buy gold!

And if it is such a good time to buy, why are the guys who currently have it, paying good money, to advertise that they are willing to sell their gold in exchange for fiat currency?

  17. Hey guys, give DeeGee a break. She’s managed to compose an entire sentence without a single spelling error.

    Baby steps are steps.

  18. You quote “The Simpsons” to make rhetorical points?
    What next? Star Trek?
Just saying – thanks. You’ve ridiculed yourself, saving me the trouble.

Whoa, hey, if you say so professor. If you want to boast that the right sucks less donkey balls than the left at talk radio (true), which in itself is a donkey-ball-sucking entertainment format, then HOLD YOUR HEAD UP HIGH YOUNG MAN.

  19. which in itself is a donkey-ball-sucking entertainment format…

…in the opinion of a guy who seems, more and more, to be “Comic Store Guy” come to life.

then HOLD YOUR HEAD UP HIGH YOUNG MAN.

Being 6’5, I HOLD MY HEAD HIGH even when low-crawling.

  20. “which in itself is a donkey-ball-sucking entertainment format…”

Unlike cable news, starring O’Reilly, Palin, and Beck. Lefties can’t compete there.

Broadcast news & television is going down fast. So are dead tree newspapers.
Looks like Tim’s definition of “donkey-ball-sucking-format” coincides with successful media enterprises.

  21. So, DG brings up a point in which something wrong was done on a Salem network, and, while it did actually happen, DG was wrong in that it is no longer going on. Mitch points out that the event really did happen, and that Salem was required to pull the show from the air.

DG, after saying something true, but outdated, is called crazy by SITD commenters. Despite being right (mostly).

Mitch could you cite that study please.

krod, I’m sure you just haven’t made it back here to call Ben on his unsubstantiated assertion. Or you tempoarily forgot how to make a bold tag.

  22. So, DG brings up a point in which something wrong was done on a Salem network, and, while it did actually happen, DG was wrong in that it is no longer going on.

Sorta. There’s some offline subtext there that I am not certain I should write about in any detail.

Mitch points out that the event really did happen, and that Salem was required to pull the show from the air.

Salem Twin Cities (and, to my knowledge, every Salem station nationwide that was involved in the infamous Kiely affair) did their statutory duty and pulled the alleged offending programming.

DG, after saying something true, but outdated, is called crazy by SITD commenters. Despite being right (mostly).

Partly, and only about the stuff the general public (and assembled SITD comment scrum) know about.

Mitch could you cite that study please.

    ????

  23. I guess I’m not sure what point DG was trying to make. That radio networks sometimes rely on shady or (rarely) criminal advertisers? That goes without saying and it has nothing to do with ideology.
The greatest frauds I can of in recent broadcast history were the fraudulent 60 Minutes TANG memos and Air America’s misuse of public — not private – funds.

Here’s the story. There is a non-profit in NYC called “The Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Club”. It received up to $9,000,000/year in NYC grants — public money — to provide social services for children & old folks.
Two executives at the non-profit, Chas. Rosen & Jeffrey Aulenbach, were skimming money. Among the other illegal things they did was to “loan” Air America $875,000 without the board’s approval. One of Air Americas’ founders was Evan Montvel Cohen, who had, until 2004, been on the charity’s board. The loans were made after several officers resigned from the Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Club to work for Air America.
Current Minnesota Senator Al “Where’s my Money” Franken was Air America’s highest paid host at the time the fraud occurred. He has given contradictory accounts of when he learned about the Gloria Wise “loan”.
Franken announced his senate candidacy on his last Air America show.
