Priorities: West Metro Edition
By Mitch Berg
As I noted a couple weeks ago, drag bores me stiff.
So it’s a little galling that “drag” – a minstrel-show appropriation of a (to me) deadly dull art form, presented under the fairly proposterous premise that people with what people used to refer to as “alternate lifestyles” are remotely “underground” [1], especially in places like the Twin Cities these days – is one of our currently inescapable social skirmishes.
Last week, a children’s book store in Chaska – Chaska – was the subject of a viral video in which a woman castigated an employee over the store holding a “drag story time”. [2]
Well, that was a line that the increasingly “blue” far-west metro will not tolerate being crossed:
Drag shows: Meh.
Metro parents tripping over themselves to signal their virtue by, er, dragging their kids to a minstrel show? Blech.
I wish I could do a blind exit poll of the kids who got stuffed into that store, to see how many of the boys were creeped straight the hell out – or bored out of their minds and desperately wanting to do pretty much anything else in the world.
[1] One of Scott Johnson’s great contributions to the American intellectual landscape was referring to today’s LGBT movement as based around “the love that just won’t shut up”.
[2] Has the store ever done a “Blue Collar Family Story Time?” An “immigrant Story Time, or a “Veterans Story Time”? An “Intact Nuclear Family Story Time?” Why is it that men doing a female minstrel show are the only “storytellers” our extreme left wants to recognize?

Does not “drag” go back millennia, back to days when women were barefoot and pregnant and only men were allowed to be on stage, so if there was a woman’s part it HAD to be played by a man – in drag? Regardless of the origin, indeed, drag is a bore although Birdcage did wonderful business with straight audiences. I also find that this tyranny by the minute minority is akin to biggest bullying campaign. Hmmm… isn’t bullying the “it” word for libturds, punishable by death?

Aren’t parents exercising said veto power by going/not going? The issue is you exercising veto power over the choices of other parents.

Drag minstrelsy would be 100% less boring if they did mocking caricatures of Kamala, Karens, MTG, Pelosi, Paltrow, Rihanna, Madonna, 7of9, etc
People point to Robin Williams, Jack Lemon, Monty Python, Bob Hope, etc, in drag, however the difference between them and drag shows is they ARE FUNNY! Drag shows are just lowest common denominator sexual titillation and burlesque combined with pissy mean spirited “jokes” about religion and Republicans, but there’s nothing funny or entertaining about them.

Yesterday, nobody was coming for our kids, that was a lie.
Except in Chaska.

I guess JPA is correct that actors played women in Shakespeare’s day, but I’d hazard a guess that not too many of them, judging by the video, were 6’6″ and 400 lbs, nor were they wearing heavy draperies on an 80 degree day, nor were they reciting solipsistic praises of drag queens to the audience. Some of them might have even had higher, feminine voices.
I guess if parents want to bring their kids to that sort of thing, they’re allowed to, but my thought is that every minute spent at “drag queen story hour” is a minute spent not enjoying genuine works of literature, playing in the park, or doing something far more useful.

I heard Kirk Cameron on Shapiro’s show today. (I don’t know if that segment made the local airwaves on the sister station.) One of the things he mentioned was that when he was doing story times at local libraries with a children’s book he’d written in last year, he was rejected by over 50 libraries that had previously held a drag queen story hour. He ultimately got most of those rejections changed after threatening legal action over the illegal viewpoint discrimination by a government entity.
He went on to talk about a nationwide storytime hour event that is coming up. Despite each location being individually organized by a local individual, usually a parent, the American Library Association is actively working to block the local reservations.

I heard another interview where Cameron was pointing out the fact that it is people who are screaming at the top of their lungs that libraries and schools are banning anything with L and G and B and rest of the alphabet propaganda, who are actively banning HIS book.

I notice NBC news does not show democrats as drag greens. Cause they already are? Which isn’t newsworthy?

There is a man in a small town near me who I frequently see walking up and down the sidewalks, waving his arms, talking loudly to no one. He doesn’t bother or harass anyone and I imagine the towns people know who he is and that he’s harmless. What if this man was brought to a story hour and children brought by their parents were forced to watch and listen to him. Is that in his best interest? Or that of the kids? Would I be shamed for suggesting we leave him to his private inner life and not present him as a viable alternative lifestyle?

In Shakespeare’s day, female parts were played by mostly very young men. These players weren’t transvestites, they did not believe that they were really a woman stuck in a man’s body.
Women were not forbidden from acting because the evil patriarchy wanted to oppress their artistic impulses, it was because ALL theatrical companies were viewed as suspicious, at the time, and needed backing by an aristocrat to work legitimately. Any woman associated with a troop of players would be considered a prostitute, and likely properly so.
One of the most difficult things to understand about the past, even the fairly recent past, is that women were not considered the same as men. If a woman did not have a husband or male relative to act as her protector, she would be considered fair game for any man to do with as he pleased. If you ran across a woman younger than 60 without an obvious spouse or male relative looking out for her interests, she was a prostitute with a pimp somewhere nearby.

The flip side of this was the forced bachelorhood of many working class men. Jack London lived this poor, working class life as a young man and wrote about it. As a man who had only his labor to sell in late 19th century America, you literally could not afford a wife, and potential wives knew this. Your sex life was prostitutes, when you could afford one. The stereotypical “hired man” working on a farm was not a bachelor by choice. Genetic studies show that historically something like half of men have never produced offspring. Close to 100% of women have had at least one child (at least until modern times).

One odd thing about human reproduction is how precarious it is. Most mammals, when the female mates with mates with male, the result is reproduction. In humans it is less common. Healthy men and women can mate dozens of times, absent birth control, and still fail to bring a new child into the world.

That’s exactly the point I was trying to make, MP. Mentally ill people perverted the meaning behind the word “drag” and are trying to mainstream their version of it. They are rewriting dictionary, history and bullying everyone to accept their version of “normal” and science™.
