Good Guys And Gals With Guns?

According to some reports, the Nashville Covenant school was not a gun free zone.

Where “some reports” = a call to the police:

A woman who was at the Nashville, Tennessee, school during the mass shooting on March 27 told police that a few staff members typically carry a gun on campus, according to a police call obtained by The Tennessean.

Some of the usual suspects are already trying to use this factoid to indict the idea of armed school staff:

It’s an astonishingly ignorant view.

I’ll explain.

Even in “Stand your Ground” states, self-defense law doesn’t as a rule allow citizens to close with and engage perpetrators, acting as cops or infantry.

The proper role for an armed staffer, according to the way actual self-defense law works, is to barricade themselves and the kids they’re responsible for into a room, and be ready to shoot at a perp who comes through the door with mayhem in mind.

Not go hunting for perp. More’s the pity.

Again, we know nothing about whether these people were in the building, or what they did.

Which won’t stop the orcs from orcing.

But those are the facts.

  1. It’s an astonishingly ignorant view

Or astonishingly cynical view for a potential political gain.

  2. Admin: So, Mr. Berg, your student is ready to advance to the next grade. Would you prefer Teacher A or Teacher B?

Berg: Which one carries a gun on campus?

    Admin: I beg your pardon?

Berg: If an active shooter starts killing kids, and if the armed teacher cannot hunt down the killer to eliminate the threat but merely uses his gun to protect his own class, then I want my kid in the armed teacher’s class. Which one is that?

Admin: You said “his.” We do not tolerate misgendering. You’ll have to leave.

  3. I think it would change the calculus of the shooter if the shooter expected one or more staff in the school to be armed. That’s kind of the idea, tho, isn’t it? To have the shooter decide that it’s too risky to shoot up a school.
I winder what the Nashville shooter would have done if she had no ability to buy a gun legally? Make an illegal purchase? Steal one? Use a weapon that was not a firearm?

  4. I don’t know that the law authorizes citizens to track and engage perpetrators, but if some DA decided to prosecute a teacher who went to the next classroom to save a room full of kids, I know at least one prospective juror who would tell him to pound sand.

  5. If I’m an armed teacher, I think wisdom is to stay with your students and secure the room, up to and including deadly force if needed – though the impulse might be otherwise.

I’m pretty sure that the LAST place I want to be with a gun in my hand is in a school hallway as the police are responding to reports of a shooter.

  6. Yea, Bot Boy, just like your buddy Walz, it’s OK for teachers to encourage and aid kids to cut off their privates, while trying to hide it from the parents, but using a gun to defend their lives, is not allowed by the woke scum.

  7. NW: good point.

Regarding Jan 6 vs. other issues, it’s worth noting that one of Clinton’s at least alleged sins was starting to weaponize the bureaucracy on behalf of the Democrats, which, given that a lot of the bureaucrats were involved in loosening voter regulations, amounts to….disrupting the succession of power, just like the Capitol riot.

And Soros AGs did the same in 2020, arguably. Technically “within the law”, I guess, but let’s not soft-pedal what it is when things like vote harvesting becomes allowed.

  8. Emery brings up a good point. People with mental illness should not possess firearms. Everyone agrees on that.

Gender disphoria is a form of mental illness. Trans teachers should not possess firearms (whether they should possess teaching licenses is a whole ‘nuther question) leaving the children in their classrooms wholly at the mercy of active shooters.

Which makes it even more important for parents to know who’s in loco parentis while their kids are at school. Is the classroom teacher armed with a pistol or a dildo?

  9. Trans teachers should not possess firearms (whether they should possess teaching licenses is a whole ‘nuther question)

No, it’s really not. At least not in a sane, civilized society.

Gender dysphoric people are no different than the crazy uncle who runs around with his arm tucked into his shirt, claiming to be Napoleon Bonaparte. Would some woke surgeon agree to cut his arm off to affirm his delusion?

    If not, it’s clearly bigotry.

  10. Early in the 20th Century, standard medical treatment for Schizophrenia was the bilateral lobotomy. That was eventually found not to be medically, or ethically sound (see also; Fanny Farmer), but the back peddle didn’t help anyone who had already got their brains mushed to pudding.

  11. disrupting the succession of power, just like the Capitol riot

I am unaware of any disruption in the succession of power during or after the so-called Capitol riot.

  12. I’m not sure I agree. When Wazzername was stalking the halls with the Kel-Tec, before he/she had shot the first time, I think if I were juror could go with the notion that he/she had made the first confrontation and that the teacher did not seek confrontation first.

I think even if you crossed the whole school yard to render her deadly threat harmless, you are clear on the charge that you sought confrontation. You are reacting to the existing threat.

    But then I ain’t Andrew Branca either…..

  13. Tru, dat.
many “progressives” probably know this, but they are afraid to say anything. It would mark them as one of the Bad People to the people they consider their peers & possible employers.
When you consider anything more important than the truth, you are dragged down. Sometime the lie is very seductive, but you still end up in the muck, repeating “Love is love” as you call for a young girl have her breasts removed to turn her into a man. Atheism is more of desperate hope than a prayer at that point.

  14. You’re right, Whistler. But Bigman makes the bigger point. No one expects an armed teacher to burst in and lay down a covering fire.

Engaging in a gunfight isn’t something that comes naturally; it takes training and constant practice.

But firing from behind the cover of an overturned desk, with all the kids behind you is instinctive.

All that said, with the proliferation of mentally ill leftist degenerates among the teaching ranks, I’d agree some serious vetting needs to happen.

  16. gl, do you really believe there will be an impartial, moral jury for a transgender case? Man, you must think there is still a law in this banana republic of a country. You are guilty until proven innocent, dontcha know? Person 3rd in succession for the presidency said so, so it must be true, you silly peasant.

  17. Don’t trust the teachers with books but arming them is perfectly fine.

A teacher who straps up of their own volition is probably a teacher I can trust to pick the right books.

  18. Gender disphoria is a form of mental illness. Trans teachers should not possess firearms (whether they should possess teaching licenses is a whole ‘nuther question) leaving the children in their classrooms wholly at the mercy of active shooters.”

Nah. The distinction is mental illness that makes one violence-prone. If we start removing rights over gender dysphoria without some violent accompanying tendencies, then mild depression and anxiety are next.

Of the transgender people in my social circle, 2 and maybe 3 are 2nd Amendment activists. To my knowledge, none of them have asked anyone to say 2+2=5.

  19. If we start removing rights over gender dysphoria without some violent accompanying tendencies, then mild depression and anxiety are next.

1: I am unaware of anyone with mild depression and anxiety cutting pieces off their bodies, or trying to convince kids that depression and anxiety is cool and fun.

2: The last 4 “mass shootings” involved gender dysphorics.

  20. To my knowledge, none of them have asked anyone to say 2+2=5.

They are a living proof of that axiom, else they would not be transgender.

2 and maybe 3 are 2nd Amendment activists

You are blinded by 2nd. Harry Reid had the highest NRA rating. Those transgender friends of yours want arms to kill the non-believers, not to protect themselves. Anyone who believes 2+2=5 is THAT crazy.

  21. Many trans people are on anti-depressants. Fluoxetine (Prozac is typical). This is a partial list of the what a person taken prescription prozac may experience: Fluoxetine may cause some teenagers and young adults to be agitated, irritable, or display other abnormal behaviors. It may also cause some people to have suicidal thoughts and tendencies or to become more depressed. Some people may have trouble sleeping, get upset easily, have a big increase in energy, or start to act reckless. If you or your caregiver notice any of these unwanted effects, tell your doctor right away. Let the doctor know if you or anyone in your family has bipolar disorder (manic-depressive) or has tried to commit suicide.
I have no problem with taking guns from people on Prozac, any more than I have a problem with taking guns from people who are suicidal. The trick is have safeguards so that the system is not abused.

  22. Be careful there MP, you have just gave the list of side effects that could be found on the WuhanFlu jab studies. So if these side-effects are good to take guns away from Prozac users, they can go after all the jabbed people. Oh wait… that’s a feature, not a bug… nevermind… carry on sheople…

  23. I used to mock people who called Psychologists & Psychiatrists “Head Shrinkers.” But they were correct, although psychology and psychiatry can provide interesting and actionable insights on the human psyche, they have become corrupt extensions of the ruling class.
The hard sciences are being corrupted as well. If it goes against the Narrative, it’s not real science:
‘But the whole universe is outside us. Look at the stars!
Some of them are a million light-years away. They are out of our reach for ever.’
‘What are the stars?’ said O’Brien indifferently. ‘They are bits of fire a few kilometres away. We could reach them if we wanted to. Or we could blot them out. The earth is the centre of the universe. The sun and the stars go round it.’
Winston made another convulsive movement. This time he did not say anything. O’Brien continued as though answering a spoken objection:
‘For certain purposes, of course, that is not true. When we navigate the ocean, or when we predict an eclipse, we often find it convenient to assume that the earth goes round the sun and that the stars are millions upon millions of kilometres away. But what of it? Do you suppose it is beyond us to produce a dual system of astronomy? The stars can be near or distant, according as we need them. Do you suppose
our mathematicians are unequal to that? Have you forgotten doublethink?’
