Tempus Fugitive

I first remember James Lilkes’ daughter Gnat as a toddler around about 9/11, in the Daily Bleat.  Near-daily updates about Gnat were a part of the early years of this blog, reading the Bleat every morning on my way about the rest of my life.

Gnat has just graduated from high school.  It should go without saying that it snuck up on me.

Congratulations, Gnat!   And the whole Lileks family, while we’re at it.

  1. First off, congratulations to Gnat and the Lilek family. It’s a huge achievement to get a kid out of the first 12 years of school well adjusted and educated.

But this got me thinking. Back when Gnat was a pup and SITD was a nacent and growing force on the NARN, there was a group of conservative activists some writing blogs, some just regular readers and commenters. We formed a group called “Minnesota Organization of Bloggers”, or MOB for short.

We got together regularly, for social events and to make a showing at various leftist protests, school board meetings and other events to let the enemy know their conquest of the Twin Cities was not complete. We were so busy and effective leftist reprobates in office, online and in various prog activist groups like the now defunct “Progressive Minnesota” started making up wild stories about us; we were a secret group of subversives; we had a formal hierarchy passing out marching orders. It was hilarious.

Nick Coleman was in the grip of his swamp fever, and regularly wrote about us…heck, he even sent a spy to a MOB social gathering. Some of us got mentioned in newspaper stories (always in negative connotation, of course); some of ran for office and some won. Mitch used to have MOBsters on his show fairly regularly.

They were great days, and I like to think we made an impact.

Seems to me though, that the filthy reprobate hoard has regrouped and is on the march like never before. I’d like to suggest it’s time for a rebirth of the MOB. Mitch has a lot more readers than the regular cast of commentators would suggest. There are a few millennials out there; let’s get them invigorated.

I don’t live in MN anymore; never will again. But I still have kids up there, and to my relief they have “seen the light” and are staunch conservatives. I bet lots of SITD readers do to, certainly Gnat has made it to adulthood with her mind clear.

So what about it, Merg? You are the only guy still out there with a platform. You feel like raising up the MOB flag again?

  2. From what I can tell, most of the MOB bloggers aren’t in the game much these days. Gary Gross is still at it regularly. I’m still blogging, as are Brad and Bubba, but we aren’t necessarily writing every day. The only other guy I can think of who has been blogging is the Red Squirrel, who was late to the party but has been consistent. Other than that, it appears to have thinned out considerably. I’d like to see more, but I don’t know if it will be easy to get the band back together.

A get together is in the works.

I don’t know if it will be easy to get the band back together.

Not sure there’ll ever be a “blog alliance” ever again – but I do think something like the MOB that gathers people in social media at large might serve the same purpose.

    It’s a good idea.
