Turnabout

The latest Rasmussen poll shows that Republicans are beating Dems by four points in the very early polling for 2010.
But here’s the part that really shocked me (emphasis added by me):
As was the case in last Tuesday’s gubernatorial elections, independents are helping the Republicans’ cause. In the latest poll, independent registered voters favor the Republican candidate by 52% to 30%. Both parties maintain similar loyalty from their bases, with 91% of Democratic registered voters preferring the Democratic candidate and 93% of Republican voters preferring the Republican.
Question: Are all those independents, who were “agents of hope and change” last year, suddenly “teabaggers?”

Some say that many of these “Independents” are really former Republicans who left when the Republican party moved so far to the left. Hence why they poll for Republicans when said party moves back to the conservative side. See Virginia as an example. Fewer Republicans voting Republican, but more independents voting Republican.

Rasmussen has had the generic ballot at Republican +5 (approx.) since July. Most other polls favor the Democrats, but Rasmussen seems to have the largest polling sample so I’m guessing it’s fairly accurate.
I think there is a big seperation between the gubernatorial race and the POTUS re-election. I’m expecting independents to trend towards wanting a GOP governor and a DNC POTUS. It makes sense to me that independents would seek balance by way of a Republican governor and a Democratic president.
Even if this is a pervasive independent mentality it’s hard to say how it will affect the congressional elections next year, since they are local in one sense but also very much national at the same time.

Polls, schmolls. There’s two things that are important about polls. The first is to give any poll any weight, one needs to know what the questions were. Without that info one can’t determine if the results of the poll are valid. Also, how the sample was weighted. Secondly, and more importantly, the only poll that counts is the one on election day. And what happens between now and then will determine how that poll turns out.

Thanks for sharing this, Mitch. This poll is more evidence that conservatives need to speak up and stand up for their principals. Now, more than ever is a time of empowerment for the American people. If Republicans and conservatives listen to the likes of TIME Magazine’s Ramesh Ponnuru, who suggests that the GOP needs more moderates and asked in his Nov. 16, 09 article, “Are conservatives leading the Republican Party off a cliff?,” they’ll be doing exactly what liberals want them to do: Simmer down and shut up.

Way to early to be counting on polls. The only polls I consider meaningful are the elections. And while I think the VA and NJ state results are meaningful the 2010 elections are a long way off giving the Media a long time to manufacture Macacca moments.
