Simple Pleasures
By Mitch Berg
This August it will be 28 years since I first started in radio.
There’s been a lot of water under the bridge – nine stations, huge hopes, big disappointments, and an entree into a life I loved. Then hated. And now kinda watch and take what I need and leave the rest.
And after all that, I gotta say it’s still a kick to drive down the street and hear a commercial with your voice on it on the air.
Don’t know that I’ll ever get tired of that.

You never do.
What’s also a kick is hearing your voice on an ad 100s of miles away on a fuzzy AM station — one that you’ve been fired from.

Alas I can never be in radio. After living on an island in the middle of the Pacific for seventeen years people still tell me I sound like one those characters from Fargo.

One of the reasons I never considered getting into something like radio — in addition to my lousy interpersonal skills — is the fact that, just like when I was a 12 year old playing with my first tape recorder, the sound of my voice emanating from anything but my mouth evokes sheer embarassment. If my voice really sounds that weird, I don’t wanna know about it.

So how’s GHJ doing? Have they seen an appreciable upturn in business?
