Segregated

Joe Doakes from Como Park emails:

Cal State offers segregated housing for Black students.  This is a good thing, Black students demanded their own space, safe from racist attacks, racially insensitive remarks and micro-aggressions committed by faculty and students.

Imagine if the headline said “Cal State REQUIRES segregated housing for Black students.”  The end result would be the same safe space for Black students; but would the headlines be as cheerful?  Of course not, freedom of association would be denied if Blacks were forced to segregate.

Imagine if White students said “Policing our speech to avoid micro-aggressions is mentally exhausting.  We want a safe space where we can freely express ourselves without offending others.  We want Whites-only housing.”  The end result would be the same campus free of micro-aggressions against Black students; but would the headlines be as cheerful?  Of course not, freedom of association would be denied if Whites were allowed to segregate.

Why do these things always seem to be one-way streets?

Their worldview is based on power.
Last week I listened to an NPR story on Georgetown. Back in the 1830s, Georgetown was able to avoid bankruptcy by selling off a few hundred slaves. Now it is rending its garments in woe.
Of course this makes no sense. It is a perfect example of ‘presentism,’ the idea that the moral attitudes of today apply when they did not exist. If Georgetown had not sold its slaves in the 1830s, it would not exist, today.
The recommendations are the usual dose of shame-bragging: http://slavery.georgetown.edu/report/
People who have done nothing wrong apologizing to those they did not harm.
It never seems to occur to these various reparations and reconciliation groups to do what reason and common sense would require: locate the people they are harming, now, and fix that relationship.
Because that would require real self examination and sacrifice. They want no part of that.

  2. I followed the link on the Georgetown story. Holy horseapples, Batman. It’s not The Onion. They are serious. Of course I suppose it’s good that Georgetown students are learning some American history. There was legal slavery in the US until it was abolished thanks to the sacrifices of white Americans who fought and died in the Civil War. But they kind of forgot about that part. Perhaps there should be a course on the Cultural Revolution in China, and how great that turned out.

  3. Democrats; leading the charge to Jim Crow in 2016 as in 1866. What’s next, buses, lunch counters, drinking fountains?

Seriously, count me glad that when I was an undergraduate, I was not in a “whites only” college and didn’t get to develop bad habits vis-a-vis other ethnicities/races simply because no one was around to point out how rude something was. Colleges using tax money to set up blacks only dorms may be setting the residents up for some NASTY surprises when they need to find work in the real world, to put it mildly.

  4. Segregated housing?
Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Jews, LBGT, others?
    What an expression of Diversity!

  5. I’m not sure who this reflects upon worse: The elitists who believe a supposedly aggrieved group is so incapable of handling imagined derogatory words and visuals that they must be segregated, or the aggrieved group who agrees with them.

This is one of the most blatant cases of soft bigotry I’ve ever seen. It puts affirmative action for college admissions to shame.

Bento. Doing the job no other self-respecting human being would.

  7. Of course, they say nothing about Grambling University. A tradinally all black school, but now, they let a few token whites and Hispanics in. Not sure how many Asians are allowed.
