After Power Line broke the story of Ilhan Omar’s apparent sham marriage to her brother (which we touched on yesterday), Channel 9 notes that there seems to be no divorce on file between Ilhan Omar and the man who is apparently her brother.
Omar’s response:
“It matters that I am a woman. It matters that I am a Somali-American woman. It matters that I am a Muslim and immigrant woman…I know deeply that the people of District 60B oppose Donald Trump-style misogyny, racism, anti-immigration rhetoric and Islamophobic division.
Absent from the response: any response, other than “you’re teh racist”.
Which will be fine in the DFL cesspool that is 60B, where a pair of novelty wind-up chattering teeth would get 65% of the vote if it had a “DFL” sticker on it.

As usual, in 60B as in most of Minneapolis, the only “prosperity” to come from the political process will be to politicians and their hangers-on.

So, it appears that this woman didn’t divorce while starting a separate family with someone else.
SO? There may be plenty of reasons why she didn’t go through with a divorce. The evidence however that she is married to two men seems pretty thin, since there doesn’t appear to be a valid 2nd marriage license on file showing a marriage. People do file for licenses without using them.
The claim that the man she is married to is her brother however looks pretty dodgy, and seems unlikely on the face of it. Reputable sources don’t seem to be confirming that the man she married is her brother.
And while Power line is only marginally better than Infowars as a source of information it is still a highly unreliable source.
But this does confirm what I see was the result of Islamophobe hate mongering — there was an exceptional turnout of Muslims at the Democratic caucuses, who seem to be highly motivated to vote down not only Trump but the whole MN GOP where ever they can, and who perceive you lot as a bunch of ugly racists.
Keep up this kind of thing and you can count on driving people away from the GOP in droves, including independents and people who have not previously voted.

The Strib actually put this on the front page this morning, but did not open the article for comments. It was a pretty even-handed report, with quotes from both “sides”. I’d have liked the article to mention that Powerline has a Google-cache of the records in question (which were deleted from public access), but it didn’t reflexively present this as a racist plot.
I think you’ve forgotten Nerdbert that the MN GOP candidate is also Somali. Pretty good guess he’s going to get fewer Somali votes now than he would have before this story ran pretty much exclusively on right wing media propaganda sites, and after comments like yours alienate a potential demographic.

What I’ve heard so far makes sense, that there are a lot of people from east Africa who have the same or similar names, not unlike John Smith, or Sam Peterson, or Bob Johnson here or Jane Smith, Mary Peterson, etc.
That appears to explain the confusion about identity and the bogus married-her-brother claims.
Further the immigration dates of the not-brother don’t match the actual dates of the real relatives of Omar arriving, etc.

City Pages has a note on this, but they call it a “right wing rumor”. They make the story about Powerline, not Ms Omar.
Other things coming out are some failure to appear charges against Ms Omar. Apparently she has no respect for our laws. But I guess that makes her an ideal DFLer.

A commenter on the original Powerline article stated there were two Marriage Certificates (“certificates” meaning completed marriages, not “licenses” for potential marriage) shown on the Minnesota Official Marriage System website: Doc. No. 10020568 for the 2009 marriage and Doc. No. 09891547 for the 2002 marriage. I just checked the MOMS site and the 2002 document is gone.
So: what happened? Did the official site initially report incorrect data? Who maintains the site? Who verified the data? Who made the correction? Seems to me it should be simple enough to clear up the mystery.
If the official site was wrong but now is right, somebody ought to be able to explain it. If only there was some group of people whose job it was to investigate and report on . . . . .
