Joe Doakes from Como Park emails:

Al Sharpton is upset the Oscars didn’t recognize a Black actor.  It makes the awards “fraudulent.”

For crying out loud, how dense are they?  There’s an award for every category down to Junior Lunch Caterer’s Assistant, why not add one more?

And let’s be blatant and clear about it – this is not an award for excellence, those awards went to Best Actors.  This is an award to shut up critics.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, this year, the ‘Token Award for Black Actor’ goes to . . . .”

  1. I’m waiting for someone to look at the percentage of black actors appearing in lead roles in American movies over the past forty or so years and comparing it to the percentage nominated and winning awards. Correlation isn’t causation of course. Will be interesting to see.

  2. Mr. Doakes has a very different understanding of what it means to be awarded an Oscar than Mr. Sharpton does.
These days, I think that Sharpton’s idea of what the award signifies is more accurate than Joe Doake’s.

  3. We’ve come along ways in 55 years. In the past, it was getting fire hoses and dogs on you. Today it is millionaires not getting a shiny statue.

  4. Ice Cube thinks his performance would have made Bogey envious. It’s racism, clearly.

  5. Everyone should be nominated and everyone should get an award. Isn’t that what screwls are teaching kids nowadays? We are looking at a sunset of civilization as we know it.

  6. It is worth noting in this discussion is that nobody is pointing towards a spectacular performance by a specific black actor/other participant in moviemaking and saying “he was robbed.”

But that said, I’m probably a poor judge of excellence in movies these days. I haven’t been in a theater for nearly two decades, and see little reason to change.

  7. The irony is that the percentage of Blacks who’ve won Oscars in the last 50 years is almost identical to the representation of Blacks in the population. It’s the Asians and Hispanics who are massively underrepresented.

But still, we can’t interrupt The Narrative with something as distracting as facts, can we?

    Correlation isn’t causation of course.

98% of liberals out there are not capable of understanding the concept. The rest of them conveniently ignore it because it almost always disproves whatever they are trying to prove.

  9. This may be slightly off topic, but I think that it calls out how the “entertainment” industry has morphed over the years.

I grew up watching the iconic westerns like Gunsmoke, Wanted: Dead or Alive, Have Gun Will Travel and The Rifleman, just to name a few. Still watch them on Channels 138 (AMC), 160, 206 (Heroes & Icons) and 209 (MeTV) and have noticed how many times God, prayer and the phrase “meet your maker” is present in the scripts. In fact, in every episode of The Guns of Will Sonnet, Walter Brennan is always saying a prayer during every episode.

Gotta love the hypocrisy of Hollyweird!
