A Tale Of Two States

In a time when actual, intentional violence is actually proliferating, Israel is relaxing its ill-advised attempts at gun control.

Apparently scenes like these…:

…in a nation in which “genocide” is within living memory have an effect, and unlike certain Americans, that effect is not “be an idiot”.

Speaking of which – in a nation in which violent crime is falling and has been for twenty years, a candidate for governor of our largest state is pressing for…more useless “gun safety” security theater:

Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday will introduce a measure for next year’s ballot that aims to stanch the proliferation of gun violence, including a provision to require ammunition buyers to undergo background checks…In the last 72 hours – 68 people have been killed and 129 people have been injured due to gun violence in America,” Newsom wrote online Wednesday.

His measure, which requires nearly 366,000 signatures to qualify for next year’s ballot, incorporates provisions of bills that stalled at the state Capitol. It would ban the possession of large-capacity magazines – more than 10 rounds – and require anyone who currently has them to sell to a licensed firearm dealer, transfer them out of state or relinquish them to law enforcement to be disposed of.

None of which, naturally, would have prevented any of the “gun violence” about which Newsom spoke.

Gun control is to violence as the TSA is to terrorism; a lot of frenetic, intrusive activity that does nothing useful, because it’s not intended to do anything but provide the illusion of dooooooooooing something.

  1. It’s about time! Just goes to show how much more dangerous things got in Israel over last couple of months for gun control to be relaxed.

  2. Meanwhile NPR and the BBC this morning were playing up the Palestinian assertion that Israel’s response to terrorist attacks (i.e. engaging and killing them) were “extra-judicial killings or executions” which should be condemned and Israel should be brought to justice – and NPR advertises itself in the next breath as an unbiased news source.

  3. Really?

Now you are reduced to making wildly bad comparisons between a state like Alakaska, large, few people, proportionately, etc. and ISRAEL???? And let’s not take out of context that terrorist attacks in Israel are increasing as (alleged ) war crimes are getting Israel in trouble for BEING THE ONES COMMITTING GENOCIDE, not the Palestinians.

Nowhere is it the case that having one’s ancestors be the victims of a genocide prevents their descendants from committing the same crime. It wasn’t even two weeks into this month, and there have been 24 Palestinians killed in the occupied territories, and nothing like that many Israelis killed in a far longer time period. Unlike you, I’ve been to Ramallah where this shooting took place this month — of an unarmed child. In another shooting, an unarmed Palestinian was not only killed for engaging in a peaceful protest, but reportedly had pork thrown on his dead body to defile it. That sounds a lot more like genocidal oriented hatred than legitimate self defense. You cannot fairly look at one side, but not at the precipitating violence of the other.

This is like your faulty claims about violence. While it is true that overall violence is decreasing, that is not necessarily true about gun violence. Rather we know more guns equates, for example, to more gun homicides:
    http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2013/09/13/2617131/largest-gun-study-guns-murder/

And since there is not a lot of evidence that more people carrying guns is doing anything useful to reduce crime or gun violence, the validity of more gun ownership and more gun carry (open or concealed) as a useful or necessary thing is crap.
    http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2013/09/13/2617131/largest-gun-study-guns-murder/
and for more recent info in 2015, defensive gun use is under 1,000, with offensive gun use in the tens of thousands:
    http://www.gunviolencearchive.org/

Add to that research like this about just toddler shootings (and please, don’t tell me the owners of the guns are not ‘law abiding’ because that does not appear to be the case, there are many of these toddler shooting where there is no evidence to support that. The people were simply unsafe gun owners. And these are just toddlers, not counting older kids involved in shootings, like the little 8 year old girl shot by an 11 year old boy recently.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonkblog/wp/2015/10/14/people-are-getting-shot-by-toddlers-on-a-weekly-basis-this-year/?tid=sm_fb

And then there is the perennial bogus argument that guns are just tools, like hammers and screwdrivers. Really? NO. They are respectively designed for dramatically different functions, and only guns are designed for the maximum efficient lethal capability from a distance when used as intended.
A perfect example of the contrast was this mass WOUNDING in Canada that would have been dramatically different if the assailant was using a firearm:

And we’ve seen plenty of road rage cases and accidental shooting incidents by cc permit holders. Also your claim about lawful gun owners and gun carriers is crap, given how easily gun rights are restored even to violent criminals who committed crimes with firearms and then go on to reoffend when their firearms rights are restored by the courts (roughly 7 times more likely to commit another violent crime).

It is also a mistaken belief that if you are a felon you automatically lose your gun rights. The reality is that you have to be a felon, under federal law, who gets over a year in jail. Most states have similar laws. Plenty of felons do not serve or are not sentenced to over a year of incarceration. More are arrested on felonies, but plea bargain down to a misdemeanor, not because they committed a lesser crime but because that is cost effective. And that is on top of those who do creepy stalking things like conservative state legislator Hackbarth a few years ago who was stalking a girlfriend – she didn’t press charges – who misrepresented his relationship and motives to police, and who went sneaking around armed with binoculars spying on the woman. Just because someone does not press charges doesn’t mean that wasn’t stalking behavior under the legal definition, and that charges could have been filed, but were not because both parties were trying to avoid negative publicity / attention.

You make poor arguments, you research them badly. Rather we see gun control can be an effective way to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and out of the hands of the irresponsible, by having better standards for who can own a firearm and for how those firearms can be transferred to others.

YES, some gun owners are both safe and responsible and law abiding; and many of them are not. Guns don’t prevent genocides, but they certainly add to the violence.

  4. Outright Lie Alert:
DG said: “And we’ve seen plenty of road rage cases and accidental shooting incidents by cc permit holders.
OK DG pu up or shut up
Name 10 road rage incidents where the gun of the CC permit holder was involved!
If as you wrongly assert there are plenty – prove it!

  5. “Unlike you, I’ve been to Ramallah where this shooting took place”

    In your fever dreams, liar.

“More are arrested on felonies but plea bargain down to misdomeaners..”

So, they are not felons. Don’t like it? Take your Thinkprogress links (snicker) and show them to the judges; tell them your FACTCHECKING AND RESEARCH PROVES their rulings are CRAP. I’m guessing they’d have you in bed and sedated at Moose Lake within an hour.

  6. Oh, and ds? I suggest you call MoJo, and ask them what state Gavin Newsome is Lt. Gov of. It ain’t Alaska. Lol.

  7. Dog, I am part Prussian. So using the Arabs…..I mean “Palestinian logic, I can go to occupied East Prussia and start murdering the Poles? Just randomly killing Polish civilians until they leave and give me my homeland back.

  8. LuLZ… “Plenty of felons are not sentenced or do not serve over a year of incarceration.”

All felons are sentenced to at least a year and a day. That is the very definition of a felony conviction.

    http://www.yourdictionary.com/felony

They may not serve the full year, but they are always sentenced for at least that long.

Once again, you have been utterly destroyed, and proven an idiot.

  9. DG is obviously sharing kombucha with EmeryTheAntiSemiticSoci@list. Only in their fevered minds could running a car at high speed at bus stop full of elderly, then climbing out and attacking them with an axe be self-defense. Yessireebob! Based on this screed it is safe to say they get their news from Al Jazeera.

But anyway, she had me at Alakaska.

Oh, and EmeryTheAntiSemiticSoci@list, let me preempt your response – HASBARA!

  10. Alakaska is a magical land where ds stores her humanity, intelligence, credibility and self respect.

  11. I thought “Alakaska” was a magical word that transformed the wildest of lunatic ravings and simplest regurgitation of party line sloganeering into incisive and insightful commentary spiced with “science” and “facts”.

I’m thinking she must have spelled it wrong because it totally did not work this time.

  12. I wonder if DogFecesForBrains is referring in her screed to this self-defense incident:

Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas told Palestinians in a televised address earlier this week that Israel had “executed” a 13-year-old boy in “cold blood.” However, the boy in question is still alive in an Israeli hospital.

The teen was injured while attempting to stab two Israel Jews–one a child–to death in a Jerusalem neighborhood Monday. The attack was the latest in a series of knifings encouraged by Palestinian political and religious leaders.

At first, the Palestinian Authority denied that the 13-year-old was a terrorist. Israeli authorities then released video surveillance footage of the teen, Ahmed Manasra, and his cousin running down the street brandishing knives during the attack.

  13. Yes, JPA. Considering the gulf between the facts, and what she wrote, I’d say that is definitely the incident she was referring to.

  14. DG- In what way is “Israel getting in trouble for being the ones committing the genocide?” Unlike you, I turned my caps lock off so I wouldn’t appear to be a drama queen.
