Connect The Dots

Joe Doakes from Como Park emails:

Obama is relaxing the Cuban Embargo.  Why?  Why now?  As always – cui bono?

One of the first items changed is that telecommunication companies can do business in Cuba.

The richest man in the world is Carlos Sim who owns the Mexican phone system, is behind the whole “Obama-phone” fiasco and also is a huge contributor to Democrats in general and Obama in particular.

Campaign donor – telecommunications company – Cuban cell phone market – I’m beginning to get an inkling.

It’s a great time to be a liberal plutocrat.

  1. I trust that if people in Cuba are trading with people in the US that this will weaken the tyranny the same way it did in China and Poland. Republicans believe that free trade is a necessary component of liberty and yet does not believe it will work in this case. People who actually believe in freedom see it leads to greater freedom. People who believe more principally in grudges get the same result.

This is only good news for everyone else, but look for congressional Republicans to do everything possible to obstruct reform. After all, they’d like to keep the Castro’s in power as long as possible.

The Cold War has been over for decades. Enough already.

  2. look for congressional Republicans to do everything possible to obstruct reform. After all, they’d like to keep the Castro’s in power as long as possible.

    Why is that, Emery?

  3. The nastiest thing about Obama’s Cuban adventure is that we got nothing in return.
Cuba still has strong ties to terrorist nations.
Cuba still keeps thousands of political prisoners.
There is no reason to believe that Obama has any particular skill in foreign policy. He has an undergrad degree in foreign relations. You would never know it.
I expect that sometime in the next two years he will unilaterally pardon the remaining prisoners at Guantanamo.

  4. actually PM he’ll do the pardon before the end of 2015 at the request of big offshore contributors who the Dems are depending upon to get Hillary in to the WH

  5. Mr. D: The current policy which has existed for fifty years has allowed the Castro brothers to remain in power. Is there any evidence to suggest that to continue this policy it will offer a different outcome? It’s mostly about the electoral politics in south Dade County where the aging population of Cuban exiles live.

  6. That doesn’t answer the question, Emery. “Congressional Republicans” is an exceptionally broad brush. How does the embargo benefit Sean Duffy, or Erik Paulsen, or even John Boehner?

  7. Sean Duffy, Eric Paulsen, Speaker Boehner and John Kline all support the Cuban embargo and are against normalizing relations with Cuba. I listened to Congressman elect Tom Emmer on a recent MPR interview and he sounded as if he would give serious consideration to normalizing relations.

With the exception of Mr. Emmer’s nuanced position. All Congressional Republicans from MN including Ms. Bachmann and Wisconsin’s Sean Duffy (WI-7) are against Obama’s Cuban overtures. I respectfully suggest you direct your questions to these individuals to find out why they would perpetuate a failed policy that has successfully allowed the Castro brothers to remain in power.
