Open Letter To Mitch McConnell And John Boehner

To:  Y’all
From:  Mitch Berg, Uppity Peasant
Re:  The Way Forward

Do the following…:

  1. Pass a bill securing the border.
  2. Devise a way for illegals already here to get a work visa
  3. Overhaul the rules for legal immigration.
  4. Let Obama veto it.
  5. Seize the moral high ground.

I don’t for a moment think either of you are smart enough, or independent-enough of all that K-street “talent” and US Chamber money, to do this.

But you could sure surprise me.

Go ahead, gents.  Make my day.  Make being a Republican less humiliating.

That is all.

  1. “Devise a way for illegals already here to get a work visa”
How? Will this exclude all those illegals who have committed a crime, or just those who have committed felonies? What about a driver license? Did they drive w/o license or obtain a DL by fraud? If I did that, I’d be in jail.
What if they have registered to vote?
What about the illegals who work w/o paying taxes? Those who work by using a fraudulent SS number?
Not so easy to give out work visas, Mr. Berg.

  2. One way that you could devise a way to get a work visa is to tell people that (a) we will be building a good fence, (b) we will be deporting en masse, and (c) they can apply for a work visa at the U.S. embassy or consulate in….the applicant’s nation of origin. If you required people to appear physically at the embassy or consulate, pay a fee, fill out a form, and get fingerprinted and tested for infectious diseases and drugs, you’d give a powerful disincentive to abuse the system.

  3. Mitch:

I have one major concern about your proposal. If we try to pass it before the new Congress is sworn we have the possibility of the Senate immigration bill being passed. The strategy of not letting it get to the floor to prevent it’s possible passage has worked. Once the new session begins then we can do what you suggest.

Anything that discourages illegal immigration will be opposed by Obama, by congressional Democrats, and the US Chamber of Commerce.
The US CC writes checks to congressional candidates. They are the #1 reason why the GOP is not solidly against illegal immigration.

  5. The Democrats seem to rather like granting amnesties every 20 years or so, and the Republicans rather like complaining about it but never addressing the roots of the problem. Investing in a better ID system and focusing on illegal employers rather than their illegal employees is essential to reducing demand for illegal immigrants. I’m not hearing that from either party.

  6. It’s the GOP that enables illegal immigration, Emery. Without the US Chamber of Commerce funneling money into elections, the GOP would much less pro-amnesty.
The US CC is pro illegal immigration because it lowers wages and benefits.
The Obama administration has raided quite a few businesses and levied large fines for hiring illegals, but they will not go after illegal workers — just the businesses that hire them. The fines are paltry compared to the money the businesses make by hiring illegals. The Feds are “milking” the businesses for cash. The ultimate source of the cash are low and unskilled American workers.
Enforcing immigration law at the employer level is opposed by the US CC and by the Left. The Left says that it will make businesses afraid to hire Hispanics that are US citizens or have legitimate work permits.

  7. Another observation:
For much of the 20th century countries have had to deal with large ethnic minorities, especially in Europe. This was a consequence of the end of the pre WWI empires.
For decades it was thought that this was a problem that could be managed at the central government level by various means.
I am not so sure that is true anymore. The problems seem intractable.
Kosovo is now a Muslim province. It was never meant to be a Muslim province, Muslim Albanians emmigrated to Kosovo (illegally), conflicts with the local Christian population followed. In 1900 Kosovo was Christian-Serb. These days it is 95% Albanian Muslim, all the result of illegal immigration and the 20th century elitist belief that religion and ethnicity were unimportant in modern times.

  8. “The ultimate source of the cash are low and unskilled American workers.”

Too many of those unemployed can’t pass a drug test or have no marketable skills.

  9. “Too many of those unemployed can’t pass a drug test or have no marketable skills.”
What should be done with them? Kill them? They aren’t going anywhere. One of the great things about religion (vs government and capitalism) is that religions condemn the view of mankind as instruments. The purpose of your fellow human beings is not to make you happy. People aren’t failures because they fail to meet your needs.
The US CC and illegal immigration problem has been around since the 1970s. Limbaugh is an entertainer, he is not a serious commenter on politics or history.

  10. “Limbaugh is an entertainer, he is not a serious commenter on politics or history.”
‘What an odd coincidence’ you and Limbaugh agree.

  11. Limbaugh agrees with me, not me with him.
Y’know, you very rarely seem Limbaugh quoted or his arguments presented as gospel on conservative web sites. Entertainer Jon Stewart is frequently used as a primary source on Liberal web sites. I can give examples, if you like.
There are fundamental differences between the Left and the Right in the United States. There is, for example, a very important pundit on the Right who opposed the Iraq war from the beginning, never reconciled himself to it, and who is a committed atheist, and yet is still a “go-to’ columnist for conservatives.
    His name is George Will.
There is no one like Will on the Left. The Left does not tolerate differences of opinion.

  12. When I compare the wisdom contained in any of the great religious tomes vs. the nonsense presented on a daily basis by our politicians, our news media, and our entertainment media, I lean towards the religious sources. People who go to church once a week receive a weekly dose of philosophy about how to lead their lives, mostly very sound philosophy. They are encouraged to be modest, to help the poor, to respect their fellow citizen. Relative to the guy who watched an hour of cable news instead, I think the guy who goes to church is more likely to sustain a free society. And don’t tell me that he could be reading an hour of Voltaire instead — he could, but he isn’t.

  13. “. People who go to church once a week receive a weekly dose of philosophy about how to lead their lives, mostly very sound philosophy. They are encouraged to be modest, to help the poor, to respect their fellow citizen.”
    Again with the instrumentality, Emery.

  14. The East Germans built a secure border. It didn’t stop all. It did not increase the respect given its creators at home or abroad. Why are the petty bourgeois of St Paul so fearful?

  15. The East Germans built a secure border. It didn’t stop all.

Statistically, yes it did. The efflux from the DDR went from a flood to a faint trickle pretty much overnight. Those who escaped did so by extraordinary means…

…and let’s not forget that “escaping” is the operative word. They were escaping a system none of them voted for.

It did not increase the respect given its creators at home or abroad.

I’ll look for a citation on that. That’s a meaningless statement.

Why are the petty bourgeois of St Paul so fearful?

I know that the left calls every dissent they can’t factually attack “fear”, so I don’t expect much more. But there’s no “fear” involved.
