This Is A First

By Mitch Berg

Let’s be clear on this – I’d love my job, which I started in early December, no matter what.  It’s an amazing opportunity.

One more thing I love – that I didn’t know about until this past Thursday?  We get Presidents’ Day off.

I haven’t had this day off since high school.  Pretty cool!

    Gee. Are they hiring?

The State of Wisconsin, where I worked for years, didn’t give us Presidents’ Day.

Because, y’know, our Presidents have all been white males, and we’re into Celebrating Diversity here.

I didn’t figure you for a gummint worker, Mitch. So is it AFSME or MAPE?

  3. lori Says:

You don’t need to be a government worker to have today off. I work for a group associated with the county that observes government holidays – all 10 of them! Happy President’s Day!

  4. Mitch Says:

Sorry, Kerm. Private sector – Fortune 500, in fact.

Just a throwback to the seventies in some ways.

  5. Chad The Elder Says:

I’m not much of an investment guru, but I think I’d short the stock of any company with such a European approach to holidays. Positively un-American it is.

  6. Mitch Says:

My current company is hardly Euro in its approach to vacations. Actually, it has a lot more to do with the number of mid-week, one-day holidays (or maybe it’s weekends – not sure) this year. It’s compensation, I’m told.

Short if you like. Our stock is doing VERY well.

AFSME or MAPE? Check out HGEA. These are the holidays us hardworking Hawaii taxpayers pay our betters in state employment to take off:

New Year’s Day ……………………………….. Jan. 1……Monday …. The first day in January
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day …………. Jan. 15….Monday …. The third Monday in January
    President’s Day ………………………………… Feb. 19 …Monday …. The third Monday in February
Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day… Mar. 26….Monday …. The twenty-sixth day in March
Good Friday…………………………………….. Apr. 6 …..Friday ……. The Friday preceding Easter Sunday
Memorial Day………………………………….. May 28…Monday …. The last Monday in May
King Kamehameha I Day ………………….. June 11 …Monday …. The eleventh day in June
Independence Day ……………………………. July 4 …..Wed. ……… The fourth day in July
Statehood Day …………………………………. Aug. 17 ..Friday ……. The third Friday in August
Labor Day ……………………………………….. Sept. 3 ….Monday …. The first Monday in September
Veterans’Day…………………………………… Nov. 12…Monday …. The eleventh day in November
Thanksgiving …………………………………… Nov. 22…Thursday… The fourth Thursday in November
Christmas ………………………………………… Dec. 25… Tuesday … The twenty-fifth day in December

In theory I have today off, but since my job is scheduled 365, I’m working. By coincidence, though, I almost always get Prince Kuhio Day & King Kam Day off every year.

  8. Kermit Says:

Fortune 500, eh? That narrows the field considerably.

My daughter is in the fourth day of her public school’s latest four day weekend. They get “Teacher Compensation Day” before the actual conferences they are supposed to be compensated for. I hope they take attendence.

I the interest of diversity, I think we should all get King Kamehameha I Day, and Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day off too. It’s the least we could do. Literally.

  9. Mitch Says:

Matters not. Back to work today.

  10. Terry Says:

    Okay, Kerm, repeat after me:
On King Kamehameha Day Kuhio Kalanianaole came down from Pu’u A’awa’awa and caught a humu’humu’nuku’nuku’apua’a’a in Anaeho’omalu Bay.

    Wal-Mart greeter?

  12. Mitch Says:

    Wal-Mart greeter?

    Halliburton hit man.
