To be fair, in the PBS interview with the Lehrer news programming, this appears to be consistent with the desires of the military leadership at the moment for regaining some sort of improving stability in the region, as part of cleaning up corruption and providing greater security in the area in an expanding effort.
One of the interesting points made was that the connection between the Pakistani security service and the Taliban and other insurgents was initially encouraged by the US back in the day when Afghanistan was occupied by the Soviet forces. We are having to undo a relation we helped start, and significantly encouraged.
