Another School Shooting…
By Mitch Berg
…that, for some reason, isn’t getting saturation media coverage.
An attempted mugging in a school parking lot in Detroit after hours was thwarted when one of the intended victims, a 70-year-old girls’ basketball coach, fought back with a handgun:
Police sources say the coach was walking the two girls to their cars when two men allegedly approached and one pulled out a gun and grabbed him by his chain necklace. The coach then pulled out his gun and shot both of them, according to sources.
One of the attackers was found dead in the median on Lafayette Boulevard, and the other was taken to a local hospital, according to police sources. We’ve learned that both of the men had attended the high school, and one had been recently expelled.
But remember; according to the left – experts on self-defense that they are – not only is arming teachers a bad idea, but concealed carry never helped thwart a crime.

The coach has a C&C permit, but I’m thinking he could be in trouble for having his gun in a “gun-free” zone. Not as much trouble – or world of hurt – as the bad guy with the gun, but it will be interesting to see what the school ends up doing or saying about this. At age 70 the coach may have been a volunteer and not a school district employee, but he could end up banned from the facility which would be too bad. You have a guy willing to put his time into the next generation, and even at age 70 willing to walk escort for two young women to keep them safe – a job he clearly performed very well.

Will the coach be suspended or terminated? Reserve officers are not always licensed peace officers with current POST certification. If he isn’t up to date, I’m sure he violated some school rule. Let’s hear it for zero tolerance!

Other articles I’ve read about this indicate that the coach was also somehow affiliated with the police, so I don’t think he’ll be in trouble for carrying.

The original story was posted 2/1/2013. Funny how, in the middle of a national debate about guns and schools, this did not seem to receive any attention outside the market it occurred in. Bias is demonstrated so often, not by how stories are covered, but in what is made into a story.
