From WhatTheCrap – Elder, Lileks, and that other guy:

Man. I never knew expressing utter ignorance of a cultural icon and branding yourself (TV-wise) as a nanny-whupped latte-drinking nancyboy could turn out so cool!
I never watched Friends – could someone put me in flagrante with Courtney Cox? [*]
[*] No, don’t. It’s a rhetorical thing.

Mitch:
Having watched many of my friends succumb to the fantasy alternative universe of the West Wing during the early years of the Bush administration, I feel compelled to offer a small reminder: No matter how good 24 is, your still losing two wars, wasting billions of dollars, and torturing inocent people.
Keep watching, while we win elections.

I feel compelled to offer a small reminder: No matter how good 24 is, your still losing two wars,
Still very much in doubt among people who actually know about these things…
wasting billions of dollars,
I lived through the seventies. It’ll be a couple of generations of faux budget-hawk rhetoric before any Democrat is entitled to yap about wasting money.
and torturing inocent people.
But I thought West Wing was off the air?
Keep watching, while we win elections.
It’s funny how you put that “democrats in a fantasy world” thing in the past tense.

Speaking of 24, I wonder if there is anything that the average socialist lefty in America is willing to risk their own life for? I can’t think of anything–certainly not for Muslim foreigners with oil wells. Maybe they’d risk their life to protect their own family, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

Well, alright, I’ll give 24 another shot. I caught a handful of episodes a couple years ago and it seemed like a rather shallow d*** waving exercise with traces of nihlism ala Tom Clancy, but maybe there’s more characterization in this one *shrugs*.
West Wing was good but preachy and very much centered on one side of the political debate (something modelled after “Yes Minister” would have been better). I really loved seeing Tony Ziegler blow up but Sheen was more of an uncle figure than a leader and I …really… didn’t need the paternalism.
As for the partisanship in the thread … well, no one’s going to convince Mitch or any of the other readers of this blog. The battle is for the independents anyways, and so long as our side can hold back on the Star Trek references I think they’ve had their fill of the types who are filled with dreams of empire and creating their own reality. Also, I think the conservatives have pretty much lost the “budget stewards” hat for now, and you really can’t blame the Dems for picking it up.
Bring back some conservatives who understand the concept of limits, who are humble and not arrogant, who don’t have a persecution complex or feel the need to lash out, who don’t think it is their patriotic duty to be a jerk – like Ramstead, Carlson, Ford, Eisenhower – and I’d feel comfortable giving them the keys to the Country. Just so long as their economic advisors aren’t frothing at the mouth with “physics envy” and want to subject us to yet another economic experiment.
For entertainment I tend to go more arty myself since I’m a very visually-oriented person:

“your [sic] still losing two wars”??
Nice to know “we” are all in this together.
“torturing inocent people”
That’s just a silly lie.
