Red Letter Day

By Mitch Berg

After six years of trying, I found all of Men Without Women  by Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul on the ‘net.

I’m so stoked about it, I can even listen to “Princess of Little Italy” with a smile on my face, knowing that “Lying in a Bed of Fire”, “Save Me”, “Inside of Me” and the title cut all await.

As a download or just the CD?

    I have the CD.

I still love “Forever” I love the bass lines.

“Princess of Little Italy” is my second favorite.

Some of the horn players on that album ended up on Springsteen’s “the Seeger Sessions”.

Too bad that “Solidarity” just wasn’t that good.

Little Steven released four more albums after MWoW. None of ’em came close. “Voice of America” was loud obnoxious fun, but started slathering on the lefty politics (not that I cared much); the next three (Freedom No Compromise, Revoluion and Born Again Savage) were just dreary and shrill.

And you’re right – the horn section has quite the pedigree; most of ’em came from the Asbury Jukes; a bunch of ’em, including the leader, Ed “La Bamba” Mannion,l are in the Max Weinberg Seven today. Also, while the touring version of the Disciples of Soul had Dino Danelli and Felix Cavalieri (Young Rascals) on drums and keys, and Jean Beauvoir (Plasmatics) on bass, much of MWoW was recorded with Max Weinberg, Danny Federici and Gary Tallent.
