Escape

There are some lessons to be learned in Henco Commissioner Mike Opat’s escape from a pair of carjacking scumbags:

Opat was about to get into his Jeep outside his home in Robbinsdale at about 10 p.m. Tuesday night when he saw the two strangers approaching in the dark, [Henco PR flak and one-time hottest woman in the Twin Cities Media Carolyn] Marinan said Wednesday night.

The commissioner nodded in friendly greeting, then turned to slip his Jeep key into the lock.

Within moments, he had been hit with the butt of a sawed-off shotgun, knocked down, kicked and punched. After he grabbed the gun and managed to break free of his assailants, Opat bolted from the alley, yelling for his neighbors’ help.

The robbers fled with his 1999 Jeep, as well as his wallet, cell phone and Blackberry.

Lessons for everyone; sometimes, resisting is your best option.

Kudos, Councilman Opat.

Please read everything I wrote.. I know it’s hard, I write too much.

What I said though, was, if you have good reason to think you have nothing to lose, you SHOULD resist.

But the training experts will give you is, in every other case, wehn unarmed and confronted by an armed man/assailant, don’t violently resist, unless the right opportunity – like oh, they aren’t pointing it at your head – presents itself.

  2. “Buzz..

Please read everything I wrote.. I know it’s hard, I write too much.”

Which is why I will not. Condense it down like your last post and keep it relevant and I will.

  3. Kel-

First, since you want to go down this road –

My reading comprehension scores are plenty good – and that, my friend isn’t being modest – and so I apologize – but since others here don’t mind boasting, guess I won’t either. (I’m a blazingly fast typist too).

Second – Rarely do I condescend to someone who is polite, well more than just rarely, I NEVER do wilfully.

Third – you saw that I had provided substantiation, and then asked for it – reading comprehension sounds like a challenge for you.

Fourth, you’re right, I’m obsessed with trying to have, with wingnuts, an actual discussion. Let me tell you why, it’s the only way I see of avoiding civil conflict.

Yet – since OCD is a diagnosis I doubt you’re even close to being qualified for, I’ll not make my appointment just yet.

Fifth, I put up with your crap, Badda’s, etc.. etc.. I so rarely directly insult any of you, I answer virtually every question, in short, I treat you with far more respect than you show, or I would say, probably have earned. Do you know why?

I comment here because the author is someone who has enough class to reply. I’ve repeatedly complimented Mitch about it..

I do so to one day, maybe, hopefully, as vain a hope as AC has told me it is, to have a sustained discussion about topics that LEADS SOMEWHERE.

This point is silly, whether to forcibly resist two ‘probably’ armed assailants. You all KNOW better.. yet you argue.. Why? I’d say that’s more indicative of needing a pill or two than anything I’ve written, but that’s just me.

  4. Peevish, if you’re going to paraphrase me, please paraphrase me accurately, instead of inaccurately.

It’s clear that Opat did the right thing by resisting — under the circumstances — just as it’s clear that Zebuhr did the wrong thing — tamely submitting to the robber, for which he was shot in the head — under those circumstances. His success clearly demonstrates that he made the right call — in that particularl situation.

Statistically, resisting an armed man while unarmed is more risky, overall, than not, but there’s an immense variation in results, and given that the “experts” that you’re paraphrasing gave you either misinformation or disinformation on a matter that can be checked, you’d be a fool to rely on them for things that you can’t check.

  5. I hate it when people start talking about “mental health”, because it’s difficult even for those of us who do it for a living to get right after working with someone in person for a long, long time. As a person who works in the field, I don’t want to use psychology (or misuse it) for recreational purposes like this. But given how much Mr. “Peevish” complains about being “condescended” to, compared with how much condescending he does, combined with a difficulty with following fairly simple narratives that seems after months of reading to look like more than just miscommunication, and I might be a bit concerned if I were “peevish” or someone close to him. These are symptoms of any number of conditions, up to and including Oppositional Defiant Disorder to Narcissistic Disorder (with both of which OCD is often comorbid). And I’m not going to pretend to be able to “diagnose” anyone via a comment, but there’s something about the way Peevish portrays himself that makes me think there’s something to look into. I sorry, that’s very prsumptuous, and feel free to ignore it, but that’s my gut. You might not want to make an appointment based on “kel”, Peevish. But if you’d take a suggestion from someone who really has no stake in this argument, it might be worth an appointment or two. Again I’m not going to pretend to “diagnose” you via a comment section.

  6. Peevish Beevish,
You’re running ’round and ’round putting a word or two in Mitch’s mouth and forcing an interpretation on his statement. He clarifies, and you insist, INSIST! that you know what he said and meant.

Consider the possibility that you might have jumped the gun… so to speak.

  7. Well, it seems that I’ve missed out on a rather large brouhaha.

Jeff- do you have something constructive to say, or are you just a coward sniping from the sidelines? Do you think this was a good idea for Opat or not? My point was, Opat was lucky, don’t try this at home, and that Mitch was suggesting to Try it at home. Do you think he’s right?

Was this actually addressed to me, or did you just misspell “Joel?” Because I was just talking about all of the Cubs fans living in Lake Michigan.

  8. Blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. Blah di blah di freaking blaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

Kudos to Opat for surviving something that’s killed an awful lot of people in the past. Luck counts. So does resolution.

And if all the good guys step back, apparently, Peevish will fire for effect.

  9. Let me tell you why, it’s the only way I see of avoiding civil conflict.

    That sounds like a threat.

Don’t ban peevish Mitch, you’d hate to be responsible for a “civil conflict”.

  10. Don’t ban peevish Mitch, you’d hate to be responsible for a “civil conflict”.

MoN is right we all know that “civil conflict” leads to quagmire where TVRWC is concerned.

  11. “Yet, most cops I’ve ever met will tell you flat out”

Actually, that tends more to be the advice of the PD lawyers, than of the beat cops, themselves.

That advice is based more on said lawyers fear of liability lawsuits, should something go wrong, than with concern for the victim.

  12. Master of.. – I wasn’t the one who, on this blog, said he couldn’t wait for the shooting to start (between lefties and righties), no, that was a neo-kook. But I’ve heard and read it from neo-kooks in a lot of places. You all hate liberals, blame them for nearly everything, and, I certainly think there are more than just a few of you who would gladly start rounding us up and putting us in camps.

Joel – I think I didn’t paraphrase, you words were “worst”.

    JoelR said:
“The worst, statistically, is to resist without a firearm, although, obviously, that does work some of the time, as Mitch said. ”

    Going on:
“It’s clear that Opat did the right thing by resisting — under the circumstances — just as it’s clear that Zebuhr did the wrong thing — tamely submitting to the robber, for which he was shot in the head — under those circumstances. His success clearly demonstrates that he made the right call — in that particularl situation….Statistically, resisting an armed man while unarmed is more risky, overall, than not, but there’s an immense variation in results”

Ok- your so the first time it wasn’t “more risky” it was worst.. meaning what Opat did was the worst thing .. not just risky – but now you want to change that to say, still, it was right? Ok.. but, that’s not a paraphrase, it is what you said.

You all wanna duck the fact that Mitch used a piss-poor example, ok, you win.

Andee- as far as narcissism goes – I think you KNOW full well that any ethical clinician wouldn’t have typed what you typed. wouldn’t have even considered making the comments because their UTTERLY IRRESPONSIBLE — but I guess your immense clinical skill allowed you to write your slander without actually ever having met me – but hey, that’s not narcissim, right?

No, you just decided to ‘toss your hat in the ring’ because you what? Lost professional detatchment? I constantly self-depricate on this blog – I post here when I’m bored, I don’t claim to not do so during the day “except on the odd time when I’m not busy” or a million other things – if you want a case study, well, let’s just suggest that you could do worse than our pal, ” Big Fella.”

I offered to leave the insults aside, but here you are, making uninformed diagnosis, which you “wouldn’t pretend to do” but then did anyway. Is that like saying, “I’m not going to call you a liar, but you are lying?”

But heck, someone who replies with blahhh blahh blahh de freakin da.. now there’s someone to be defended, conduct beyond reproach, right?

I mean, if you were a clinician, and you had someone saying “hey, i’m not perfect – let’s both cease with the insult barrages” and the other said “Blahh blah blahh de freakin da”.. can I ask you, as a clinician, what would your reaction be?

Oh, I get it, it would be to attempt to, without really knowing the person, diagnose the first one, and ignore the last one. BTW – Andeeee I’ve made that appeal to Mitch, oh, I don’t know, maybe a hundred times.. he’s not interested it seems.

Tell me again why I should care about your opinion? Whatever. I’m moving on.

  13. Master of None: keep dreaming. Peev can not NOT comment.

Except for when it’s me, as I’m still enjoying the benefits of a full press Peev shunning initiative. Thanks to said shun, I can write things like “Peev likes it up the pooper,” and I can rest easy knowing I won’t be subjected to an 8,000 word term paper wherein Peev explains why he is not, in fact, an enthusiast of rectal insertions of any kind when directed at him or any other unwilling recipient. And, because he won’t respond, the rest of us can just nod and agree Peev actually does, indeed, enjoy a good pooper poundering. After all, Peev’s not DENYING it.

That said, Peev likes it up the pooper.

  14. Awesome my intestines just leapt up my throat and tore my eyeballs out of their sockets in order to prevent the further torture that reading this thread of jibberish represents.

    Peev : Get help

Everyone else : Where the hell did you find this guy?? And is there any way they’ll take him back?

  15. I’m not here as a clinician. I’m here as an observer who knows a little about the subject of psychological disorders. So I’m not using my name, and this is not a clinic in any case. But if you’d like me to be perfectly correct about things, OK. You are an asshole. It’s not clinical, but its accurate.

  16. Andee
wow, ICD9 313.81 good luck getting his insurance company to cover that when they learn he’s over 21.

It looks like you hit the mark with ICD9 301.81 – that has him howling – he must have run into that one before

I wonder if he’ll post his PCL-R to prove us wrong?

  17. Now I kind of feel sorry for the little guy. Maybe we could take up a collection, or hold a telethon or something.

    Any ideas?

  18. Peevish-Beevish:
You all wanna duck the fact that Mitch used a piss-poor example, ok, you win.

Actually, the example isn’t all that bad… considering the guy isn’t dead. Obviously, a much better example would be if one of the assailants were marked, injured, caught, killed, or if they went off empty-handed… or, obviously, if they had managed to introduce PB/Peevish to the concept of self-editing, less-is-more, and a well-focused mind.

The innocent citizens must take their victories where they can find them. Perhaps these crooks realize that this neighborhood might not just sit there and take it. Perhaps this guy’s neighbors might be encouraged to fight back.

    That sends a message.

Maybe Peevish Beevish doesn’t get that. Cut him some slack… he’s got an ideology to flog He’s also got a spleen to vent and attention to grab.

  19. “I don’t want to bother with the whole “ban” thing, because all you’ll do is pick another anonymous ID to fill…WHATEVER need that commenting seems to fill in your life.

    (Which I just. Don’t. Get.)”

    Needed to be repeated.

  20. I don’t always agree with the Peevish One, but he drives you guys crazy, and that’s enough to earn him a permanent seat in Angryclown’s clown car.

Don’t worry about Cathcart, Peev. He’s not currently laboring under an Angryclown shunning (At least we don’t think so. Note to self: check archives.) You can count on your bud Angryclown to whack him over the head with a tube sock full of cat poop when warranted.

  21. On a different note, I had a terrible crush on Carolyn Marinan when she was on KARE on the late 80s. Resisting her blue eyes was not an option.

I hope that’s not too controversial for the peevish one. After reading this exhaustive thread (insomnia’s a bitch), I can tell that Peevish is not one to be trifled with… his power of misconstruance is the stuff of legends.

  22. a permanent seat in Angryclown’s clown car.

The one with the whoopie cushion?

    That one never gets old.

  23. I had a terrible crush on Carolyn Marinan when she was on KARE on the late 80s.

There might just be a blog post in that subject…

  24. he drives you guys crazy

Well, only in the same way that ants at a picnic “drive” one “crazy”.

Hey, Peev – since I’m out of the weeds on project-review hell from yesterday, let me tee this up:

I said what I said based on my own reading, research and experience. Nowhere is there any imperative given to either follow my example or – most importantly – not think for oneself.

And if you want to play the “got a cite” game (I do, but, again, that’s not really the topic of this post), then I’ll play it right back.

Don’t “cite” your “cop friends” unless they’re willing to go on the record and have their statements questioned.

    Fair is fair!

  25. AC, it’s not so much Peev drives us crazy; it’s more exasperation with his repeated hijacking of comment threads to indulge his. . . whatever the hell void it fills for him to drone on endlessly. Your commentary, AC, as silly as it is, can still be entertaining, and it’s fun to zing back and forth between you, and Flash and others. When that dialogue is interrupted by a sea of text nobody save Mitch cares to read, it really screws with the flow. In my experience, having blogged since early 2002, comment boxes should be more like dinner party conversations, not some podium for someone to ascend and accost the guests with endless, borderline insane blatherating.
