Stuff From The “Draft” File

So much stuff in the hopper; so little time to finish it all.

But there are a few things in the works here that I thought I’d mention – partly to “tease” it, partly because posting it makes me feel committed to getting it all done.

How The Hell Does Emmer Win This Thing?: Not really a question – Emmer’s going to win, probably by 3-4, which isn’t to say Republicans and conservatives don’t have a huge order ahead of us.  But how’s he going to win it?  I have some ideas.

Making The Cut: How Minnesota can fix the budget problem without destroying the state economy.

Requiem For An Old Radio Station: Too hard to explain.

The Return Of “Things I’m Supposed To Love, But Can’t Stand” / Things I’m Supposed To Hate But Like Anyway”: One of my favorite features from last year, I have a fresh wave of incongruity coming up shortly.

World War II: Fact And Myth: I won’t give out any spoilers, though.

What The Hell Do We Do About The National GOP?: Pretty self-explanatory.  Might take longer to finish than the WWII series…

Stay tuned!

  1. Wishful thinking, I doubt Emmer is going to ever get further in the numbers than he is now; he’s lost the support that Pawlenty had, most recently from the fire fighters and police.

I agree with Joel R. from a few days ago; his numbers don’t add up correctly.

While he has’t made any more disasterous gaffes like his tip proposals, he hasn’t made any big winning arguments either.

The gubernatorial race is looking not so much as either candidate winning, as a competition to see who makes the fewest damaging errors.

I’ll be surprised if Bachmann pulls out another term either.

  2. I’ll be a tad more charitable. But DG; they say the worst thing you can do is believe your own press. I’ve joked – and not-so-joked – in the past about what seems to be a parallel affliction of yours; believing what the left-wing echo chamber says about things, without a whole lot of external perspective.

    Wishful thinking,

Right – wishful thinking based on years of watching this sort of thing.

Emmer is polling better than Tim Pawlenty was eight years ago.

Sorry, DG. That remark shows that your persepective is razor-thin.

Police and fire *almost* always go to the DFL. Pawlenty was an anomaly that said more about Mike Hatch than it did about anything else. And not all of the Police/Fire unions have spoken yet.

While he has’t made any more disasterous gaffes like his tip proposals, he hasn’t made any big winning arguments either.

His tip “gaffe” was all heat and no light, from a bunch of well-funded pressure groups that know how to make noise and get media attention, but really don’t have much in the way of coattails.

As to “winning arguments” – as I’ve written in the past, twice, Emmer would be crushingly stupid to come out with his plan too long before the final stretch of this race. He’s not bankrolled by infinite soft money, so he has to make sure he saves his biggest punch – his plan – for when itll do the most good, the stretch. Especially given that Dayton’s got nothing.

    It’ll be out soon.

To some extent, that’s all political races.

I’ll be surprised if Bachmann pulls out another term either.

Further proof that you’ve got a nasty case of Pauline Kael syndrome.

Bachmann is going to win – VERY conservatively – by eight. Probably ten. Tarryl Clark won the primary by a 2:1 margin – over a woman that’d pulled out of the race two months earlier.

  3. Was at the state fair today. Notes:

All Schells beers are available in Heritage Square.

1280AM The patriot is out of the Reagan shirts in XL. But have the “Miss me yet?” Bush shirts left, so got that one instead.

Saw a fair number of Emmer buttons on the grounds, but the fair is Republican territory so it makes sense.

Is Ken Patel more insane than John Edwards?

Amy Klobuchar showed up at the Number 4 site just as the 12 noon news was starting, to get some free publicity.

Walked by MPR stand 3 times. Noted that 100% of the staff and fans were white. That must make them racist.

  4. Chuck;

Thanks for the Schell’s tip. When James Page Brewing failed, Schell’s became my favorite. They put the icing on the cake when they acquired Grain Belt, brewing it using the original recipe. Summit comes in a strong third, but I still roll to Sam Adams Summer Ale from June through August.
