Six!

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

It was exactly six years ago today – March 6, 2004 – that the Northern Alliance Radio Network had our first broadcast.

And by “broadcast”, I meant singular; the show started as a single three-hour show with several co-hosts.

“Several?”  On that day, the show had nine co-hosts; Scott Johnson and John Hinderaker from Power Line, Chad the Elder, JB, Brian “Saint Paul” Ward and Atomizer from Fraters Libertas, Ed Morrissey (then) from Captain’s Quarters, King Banaian from SCSU Scholars, and me. I think King was out of town on business – so what meant a total of eight people.   It wasn’t quite the first time we’d all seen the business end of a microphone; I’d had a little one-hour dress rehearsal the previous week, so everyone could try on headphones and learn a little bit about talking into a mike.

But one thing I wasn’t clear on, on that first morning, was who was exactly who.  I was pretty clear on who was Scott and who was John.  But I had only met Chad, JB and Atomizer once before (at the infamous lunch party in Wayzata with Hugh Hewitt the previous January that’d launched the show); I kept mixing them up on the air. In my defense, the only people who do shows with nine cohosts are cable access shows and NPR.

Things have changed, of course.  In big ways (Scott, JB and Atomizer left early on; Chad’s burgeoning family drew him away last year; the NARN morphed into two, two-hours shows, and then a third, adding Michael Brodkorb from 2006-2009) and small (most of the guys are more or less perfectly comfortable “soloing”, or doing their whole two-hour show by themselves; even though I’d done talk radio before, that even intimidated me six years ago).

But two things haven’t changed.  We get virtually no money (other than the odd talent or appearance fee – and if you see an AM1280 sales staffer out there, please tell ’em to get on the stick) – and it’s still a blast.  One of the highlights of my week.

We’ve had plenty of help, of course; I gotta thank everyone else that helped out; our array of producers over the years, Tommy Huynh, Jon Osburne, Matt Reynolds, Sam Holmgren, the Russian Wonder-Twins Irina and Anna, and of course the late Joe Hansen.  Also the folks at AM1280 – John Hunt and Patrick Campion, the GM and program director who for whatever reasons decided to give airtime to nine bloggers, and to Ron Stone and Lee Michaels, who do the same thing today, and to Nick Novak, the program director who helped so much with the show’s development from ’06 through ’08.

Anyway – happy birthday, NARN!  And thanks, Ed, King, Brian,  John, Chad, Michael, Scott, JB and Atomizer!

Your NARN of NARNs

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Tomorrow’s Northern Alliance (Volume II) broadcast is going to be especially fun.

First, Ed and I will be interviewing Amy Alkon, author of I See Rude People

I’m looking forward to this; society has gotten a lot less polite and civil out there.  We’ll talk with Amy about how all of us people of ethics and manners can coexist with all of the sleazeballs, h0-bags, jagfingers, scumwads, drooling autolobotomites and other moral and ethical amoebae out there.

And after that, we’ll be talking with Miss Minnesota 2009, Brooke Kilgarriff.  She’s going to Las Vegas to vie for the Miss America 2010 title in a few weeks; we’ll catch up with her (we had a blast talking at the State Fair) and especially to plug her CD, Carry You Through

…which is a benefit for the Children’s Miracle Network.

Anyway – please join Ed and I from 1-3PM tomorrow on AM1280 The Patriot, over the air or via the stream.  You can also join Ed’s live stream at Hot Air (check tomorrow).

And go ahead and “fan” us on Facebook when you get a moment!

On Ice

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

Today, the Northern Alliance Radio Network is live at the Ice Fishing show, at Rivercenter in downtown Saint Paul.

  • The King Banaian Show – On AM1570, “The Businessman”, from 9-11.  King’s broadcasting from Saint Cloud, at long long last (and, alas, that means not at the ice fishing show.  Sorry, folks).
  • Volume I “The First Team” –  Brian and John are on assignment today, so join KKMS’ “Jeff and Lee”, from AM980 The Believer, dipping their toes into the world of political talk from 11-1.
  • Volume II “The Headliner”Ed is also off on assignment today, so I’ll be up from 1-3.  I’ll be talking with Rep. Kurt Zellars about the state budget deficit (it’s gonna be mighty mighty mighty big); James Lileks will also be joining the show at some point or another.  Tune in!
  • And don’t forget, our long-time colleagues David Strom and Margaret Martin lead things off on the David Strom Show from 9-11AM on AM1280!

Radio Dazed

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

By the way – posting’s been zephyr-light over this holiday weekend (although I see Roosh and Doug have contributed – bully, lads!), and I’ll confess I needed a bit of a break.

And the show’s off today, too – we’re taking our traditional Thanksgiving day off.  I hope you’re enjoying the “Best Of…” NARNs going on today.

But boy, do we have some fun coming up!

Two weeks from today, on 12/12, we have a whammajamma double-feature:

  • Amy Alkon, the Advicegoddess and author of I See Rude People, will join us for what promises to be fun and impeccably-mannered interview.  We’ll talk about the seeming paradox that a blogger who writes about manners would have a comment section full of so very much ire.  But we know how that works, don’t we?
  • Also – Miss Minnesota 2009, Brooke Kilgarriff, will join us on 12/12, just a few weeks before she jets away to Vegas to take her shot at being Miss America, 2010.  We talked with her at the fair, and everyone decided it was so much fun we had to do it again.  I may have to get Bogus Doug to brief me on her appearance on American Idol back in ’05 (Sorry, all – I’ve never watched it), or maybe we’ll just get her to sing again (she is good).  And hopefully we’ll help sell some of her albums; it’s for the Children’s Miracle Network, which a great cause, natch.

What could possibly top this show?  Well, maybe nothing on our watch.

And then again, maybe not…

Radio Silence

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

Mistaken Identity

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

After almost six years of doing the Northern Alliance, my mom is finally worried.  She sent me this email, asking “I had no idea your radio shows got this violent!”.

The headline:

This not very charming fan: Morrissey storms off stage after bottle hits him in the eye

“No relation”, I told Mom.  “Not to worry”:

When it comes to live performances, it seems former Smiths frontman Morrissey just isn’t having any luck of late.

The 50-year-old musician stormed off stage last night after being hit in the eye with a bottle while performing in Liverpool.

I told Mom not to worry.  The Twin Cities’ left is usually pretty benign; their idea of “heckling” at live events is to stand at the periphery of the crowd and chant “Public Option Now!  Public Option Now!”  For many of them, it’s also their idea of “argument”.

Anyway – all’s well.

We Got A Real Pressure-Cooker Goin’ Here…

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

WELCOME “MERCURY RISING” “READER”(S):  Wow. “Phoenix” is still yapping about this?  Sheesh.  Even for an anonymous gutless leftyblogger, “she” is a dim little specimen, isn’t she?

Let me give you a little background, so you know know something – which is more than “Phoenix” can ever say:  In radio, you always plug the show after yours.  Hell, if “Phoenix” and “Avidor” (heh heh) bought time after my show, I’d give them a plug – and they’re “both” idiots!   Because that’s what you do when you do radio.

“Phoenix” thinks this is evidence of a “close tie between Bradlee Dean and the GOP”.  I have faith enough in people to know that most of you know that correlation doesn’t equal causation.

Hey, tell “Phoenix” I said I!  And tell her to go easy on the “thuddingly stupd”, or “she” might run out!

Radio Free Saint Paul

Saint Paul is a one-party town.  There is no more political diversity in Saint Paul government that there was in Ceaucescu’s Romania (although the Saint Paul DFL isn’t quite that bad.  Yet.  I’m kidding, of course.  I’m a kidder.  I kid).

Whatever your political beliefs – even if you’re a principled liberal, for that matter – a functioning multi-party system is essential if you want to ensure some sort of accountability, to say nothing of vigorous debate, in government (if you’re an unprincpled liberal, of course, you want Saint Paul to be a little Chicago.  But then, I’m not writing to you, if that’s what you are).  Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely, as they say – and the Saint Paul DFL has absolute power.  Even if you are a DFLer, you have to realize that can’t end well.

Anyway – the Saint Paul Mayor’s race is the single biggest race in the state in 2009.  And the Saint Paul School Board race is a battle for “control” – and by control, I mean “complete, unfettered” – of the state’s second largest school district; Tom Conlon, the board’s only Republican and, as it happens, the only elected Republican official anywhere in any governmental body in Saint Paul, resigned to move out of state over the past winter.  Every single elected official in Saint Paul is a DFLer.

And it shows.  Saint Paul’s property taxes are up over 40% since Chris Coleman took office; services, I assure you, are not.  Either is crime – but after years of being one of America’s safest major cities, crime in Saint Paul is on the upswing even as it declines in Minneapolis.  There are entire office towers downtown that could collapse, and nobody would notice, because virtually nobody works there.  There are probably 4,000 vacant houses in the city, and property values are falling faster than Lorenzo Lamas’s career bell-curve, and neither shows any sign of slowing, much less reversing.

And the school system is a shambles.  After a decade of playing the “Celebrity Superintendant” game, and spending like they had their own currency press, the Saint Paul schools’ graduation rate is almost as low as the tax increases are high; around half of our students graduate; shameful as that is, the rate is much, much lower among minorities.

So I want you all – even if you don’t live in Saint Paul – to tune on Saturday.  Because we have an opportunity here.

It sometimes feels like being a Republican in Saint Paul is like being a Spartan at Thermopylae (“Our tax hikes shall blot out the sun!”  “Then we shall protest in the shade!”) – but there are quite a few of us out there.  Anywhere from 28% to 40% of the city votes Republican in Presidential and Congressional elections, when the turnout (largely among government union workers who can’t even read the “R” word, and bobbleheaded college kids whose only reflex on encountering cognitive dissonance is to “hiss” like a pearl-clutching Victorian) is huge.

But as the party showed us in Highland Park two years ago, if every Republican turns out, and makes sure every Republican turns out, we can shock the world city.

So please tune in.  We’ll be talking with Mayoral candidate Eva Ng, as well as school board candidates Pat Igo, John Krenik and Chris Conner.

And we’ll be talking about how each of you, no matter where you live, in or out of Saint Paul, can help push this thing over the top.

Saint Paul needs your help.  We’ll show you how.

This will be on Saturday, from 1-3PM, on Volume 2 of the Northern Alliance Radio Network.
