Congratulations!

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

An assembled multitude of area bloggers and, like, actual friends and relatives were present, and in some cases live-blogging, the the first blogger wedding I’m actually aware of, between Ben “Hammerschwing” Worley and Faith “Mall Diva” Stewart, today.

All the best to the Worleys!

And here’s hoping the father of the bride, John “Night Writer” Stewart, recovers soon.

Justice Is Served With A Side Order Of Vareniki

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

One of the great joys of spring and summer in Minnesota is our small proliferation of restaurants with patios.

So I”m glad to see that the PiPress’ list of the top 25 restaurant patios includes:

Moscow on the Hill, 371 Selby Ave., St. Paul; 651-291-1236; moscowonthehill.com: This Russian restaurant’s enclosed patio is one of the best-kept secrets

Because, doy, it’s enclosed.  But the Cathedral Hill joint is one of the great joys of life in Saint Paul in the summer.

Of course, not all is well.  One of the real signal joys of life in Minneapolis – Keegans Pub’s smoking patio, out back – is under attack from city bureaucrats who want to assess fees on summer-only seating as if it were indoor, year-around real estate.  It’s a bald-faced attempt to shut down the cigar patio, and it’s further evidence that Minneapolis is a deeply stupid city.

More on that story coming shortly.

Blogging Is A Strange Thing

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

I’ve been doing this blog for over seven years.  I’ve written somewhere north of 10,000 posts in that time.  Most of them are gone and forgotten – it’s an ephemeral medium – but I have a few favorites.

And so do other people. I have a few posts I’ve written through the years that still get the occasional commenter, years after they were written; they turn up prominently on Google, so they have a bit of a life of their own. Posts about Plain Layne, Bill Frist, Ann Nelson (North Dakota’s sole 9/11 victim), Kathleen Soliah, the Vikings Sex Cruise and Garrison Keillor still draw hits.

Brad Carlson has has a bit of a brush with this phenomenon.  Here’s now it starts:

I am still receiving comments on a post I put together last month. In that one, all I did was cut and paste an e-mail I received from AM 1500 KSTP where they announced the dismissal of talk show host Bob Davis. But the one which really takes the cake is a post where I made a throwaway comment about a long forgotten former Twin Cities sportscaster.

Read the post and see how it ends.

Just As A Point Of Order…

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

…someone please pass the word to the NotSoBright-o-Sphere that not only is the Minnesota Organization of Bloggers (MOB) utterly apolitical…

…but our “membership” (which is entirely a matter of saying “Hey, Mitch/Chad/Brian, I wanna be on the MOB Blogroll!” and coming to one of our parties) has no concept of “standing”.  There are no qualifications, no standards, no dues, no nothing.

So if, hypothetically, someone uses the phrase “…MOB Member in Good Standing”, you’ll know that they are just making stuff up.  Again,

Hypothetically.

That is all.

Blogrolled

Monday, March 16th, 2009

It’s been a little over a week since the MOB Party.

One of the upsides of these parties is that you get to meet all kinds of great people – many of them bloggers.

Downside?  At the moment, “Blogrolling.com”, the site where the MOB “Management” maintains the MOB blogroll, is having trouble.  We’ve been unable to add new blogs to the MOBRoll for a while.

So to hold us a bit while we wait to see if Blogrolling unfuzzles itself, I’d like to introduce you to a couple of blogs that should  be on the MOBroll (and will be, ASAP):

  • AmbulanceDriver, run by a longtime friend of this blog (who might need to remain anonymous while he works out some legal issues – am I right, D?).  Lots of great healthcare policy stuff mixed in with many days in the life of, well, an ambulance driver.
  • Conservative Cravings: This blog, and the blogger, were new to me when we met at the MOB party.  Check it out regularly!
  • Joel Rosenberg is also writing for Windypundit these days.

If I missed you, let me know!

Party On, Wayne

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

So the MOB party was last night.  It was the first one we’ve done in about 18 months.  I expected sort of a “rebuilding season” kinda vibe to the party, with maybe 40-odd people showing up.

I counted a total fo a little over 70 over the course of the evening, with probably a little over fifty in the room at one time at the party’s peak.

Being the peripatetic sort (and having heard once upon a time it’s a good host’s job to make sure everyone meets everyone else), I did my best to actually try to meet, if not have a meaningful conversation, with everyone there, just to get an idea of how showed up, and from where.

My attempts to get everyone are usually laughably incomplete, but here goes:

  • Lileks, of course, with the Giant Swede and a significant-looking other.
  • Bob Davis of KSTP-AM
  • Laura and David Hemler, fans, activists, and longtime friends of the NARN
  • Joel Rosenberg and Felicia Herman
  • Gary M. Miller, Jeff Kouba and (I believe) Paul from Truth Vs. The Machine
  • Casey, an intern reporter from The Daily Planet
  • Jeff Rosenberg of the Daily Liberal MN Publius
  • Mini-Flash 2.0 – Flash’s (Centrisity) doppleganger.
  • Tom “Swiftee” Swift
  • Jordan Mason  – formerly of the Taxpayers League – and lucky guy Mark Wernimont.
  • The entire Night Writer clan; John “Night Writer” Stewart, the Reverend Mother, Mall Diva, Tiger Lily and Uncle Ben.
  • Mr. D – of blog and comment section fame.
  • Former MOB Mayor Andy “Andee Applecowskee” Aplikowski and Carrie (bka “Spurringirl”).
  • Enge and his daughter
  • Doug “Crossword Bebop” Bass and at least one of his kids
  • Half of the McCollow/Pivec/Hubble clan; Katie (formerly of Yucky Salad with Bones) and husband Mike, sister MLP (from Casual Sundays) and – !!! – husband Jay Pivec, who was my college’s basketball coach back in 1984, whom I’d not seen in 25 years, who is the head coach at Minneapolis Community Technical College, and who earlier that every evening had won the game that’d send MCTC to nationals, along with the youngest sister and Katie’s twin/friend (whose names both elude me yet again).
  • King Banaian and Janet B of SCSU Scholars, and King’s friend Ken Doyle.
  • A couple of NARN2 Webstream viewers, including Wendy “Tolowen” and a couple others whose names have dodged me.
  • Comment section regular Just Plain Angry
  • Jamie Delton of Delton Digest and his friend, er, Shawn/Sean (sp?)
  • Marty Andrade
  • John “Policy Guy” LaPlante
  • David Strom and Margaret Martin
  • Duke Powell, former Burnsville state rep and new blogger at Ambulancedriver.com, who had to leave early to, well, drive an ambulance.
  • Matt Abe of North Star Liberty
  • Chief, Guy and Lassie from Freedom Dogs
  • Fresch Fisch
  • Joe “Learned Foot” Tucci from Kool Aid Report
  • Leo Pusateri of “Psychmeister’s Ice Palace” and, er, Mrs. Pusateri
  • Marty Stanchfield, promotions whiz, with the hit of the evening, the Obama spinny-head doll (Thanks, Marty!)
  • Kevin Ecker
  • Chris from Rocket’s Red Glare
  • Barry Hickethier
  • the Other Chris, from BuddhaPatriot
  • And of course, Mayor Johnny Roosh and the first lady, Mrs. Roosh!
  • Commenter Jim C.

I apologize to anyone I missed; I did my best to reconstruct the list from pure, overtaxed memory.
Special thanks to Terry and Virginia Keegan, who made room for the party after I, ahem, neglected to tell them we’d be descending on them (and thanks to Barry for tipping them off last week, averting disaster…)

We’ll do another one this summer, likely at a more spacious location (details being arranged).

And the long-joked-about MOB Day at the Range – wherein a MOB party would start at a firing range and move to a bar of some sort (in that order and no other), long spoke of tongue-in-cheek, actually has a better-than-even chance of happening this year.  Stay tuned.

UPDATE:  D’oh.  And Eric Black from the MinnPost.

Was disappointed to see the MinnPost’s David Brauer didn’t show up to recreate his ambulance scene with Duke.  Also hoping some of the MPR crowd can make it next time!

UPDATE 2:  Yep, Brad and Jen Carlson were there, too.  I reconstructed the list by who I saw sitting where; the Carlsons’ table had all sorts of people who were harder for me to remember, so I mentally kept going “I’ll get back to them!” every time I typed out names from that table.  But I didn’t.  Until now, I mean…

Party Like It’s Ten Years Ago

Saturday, March 7th, 2009

Don’t forget – the Minnesota Organization of Bloggers Winter Party is tonight at Keegans Irish Pub in Northeast Minneapolis.  Festivities should tee up around 6PM – I plan on being there by 6, anyway.  They’ll go until we feel like not going anymore – whatchagonnadoaboutit?

We’ve got an interesting group of RSVPs so far – a lot of the usual suspects, some new faces, some people you already know, others who’ll be meeting us for the first time.

Hope to see you there!

Let’s Not Forget…

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

…that we’re two days away from the MOB Party – Saturday night, 6-ish at Keegans in Northeast Minneapolis (University at Hennepin, across from Surdyk’s).

We’re got a great bunch of RSVP’s so far, but there’s plenty of room; drop me an RSVP at “feedbackinthedark@yahoo.com”, or send me a direct message on Twitter (@mitchpberg is my ID).

Or just show up – I mean, nobody’s ever been kicked out of a MOB party, right?

For Date Night This Saturday…

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

…ask your significant other or spouse “What, really, could be better for our date night than to go to Keegans and hang out with a bunch of bloggers?”

Nothing, indeed!

Be there!

Send an RSVP, if you’re fixin’ to go, to the email address “Feedbackinthedark” at yahoo dot com.

The Day After A Week From Today

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Don’t forget – the Minnesota Organization of Bloggers kicks off its fifth year next Saturday (3/7) at Keegans Irish Pub in Minneapolis.

As always, the MOB is non-partisan, and non-avocational; you don’t have to be a blogger to attend, much less a conservative one.  We explicitly invite bloggers of all (or no) political affiliations.

While you can feel perfectly free to show up unannounced, I’m looking for RSVPs in any of the following places:

  • Either write me at “feedbackinthedark@yahoo.com”, or…
  • leave a comment in any MOB Party thread, or…
  • go to Twitter and send a Direct Message to mitchpberg (or on the hashtag #mobparty).

It’s been a while.  I’m looking forward to it!

MOB: Bring A Friend!

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Remember – the MOB Party is a week from Saturday night, 3/7, at Keegans, starting around 6ish.

We’ve got RSVPs coming in, and I haven’t even started sending out invites.

Of course, if you don’t get invites, come anyway – the invites usually go to media peeps, government types and leftybloggers (who, inured to suffering by years of attending “Drinking Liberally”, tend to think “party” is a conflation of “partisan duty”, and need to be shown how to have fun) (I’m kidding, I’m kidding)

The MOB party (Karl Bremer’s vacuous caterwauling aside) is non-partisan; you don’t have to be a blogger to attend, and we explicitly invite bloggers of all (or no) political affiliations.

Anyway – set aside an hour or two, and a pint of stomach capacity, and join us!  It’s the fifth anniversary of the MOB, and we’d love to have you there.

It should be fun!

On behalf of Mayor Roosh – as Joe Biden would say, this is your patriotic duty!

MOB Party: Time To Remember How To Get To Minneapolis!

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

It’s time for me to make an announcement, in my capacity as Press Secretary for MOB mayor Johnny Roosh.

(to say nothing of my capacity as Capo Di Tutti Bloggi in the MOB:)

At any rate, as announced on the NARN2 show this past Saturday, the next MOB Mayor’s party will be held March Seventh, at Keegan‘s, starting around 6PMish.

As always, the MOB Mayor’s party is non-partisan, and non-avocational (someone tell Karl Bremer and Steve Perry); you don’t have to be a blogger to attend, and we explicitly invite bloggers of all (or no) political affiliations.

While you can feel perfectly free to show up unannounced, I’m looking for RSVPs in any of the following places:

On behalf of Mayor Roosh – sheesh, what else would you have planned?

On behalf of Mayor Roosh, c’mon down!

Because You Can Never Party Too Hard

Friday, February 20th, 2009

It’s been a long, long week.  I’ve had one of those ugly little bugs that’s not quite bad enough to call in sick over, but still messes up  your day.  And I haven’t been sleeping much since I’m looking at needing a second-shift job to pay the taxes that’ll be descending on me from the local and federal levels.

But it’s nothing a little binge-drinking can’t fix!

Tis the season for Minnesota Organization of Bloggers parties.  Now, when I say MOB parties, I know – it’s been a year and a half since the last one.  It’s high time.

And we’ll make up for lost time, here; this weekend, the Anti-Strib guys are throwing a shindig over at Keegans.  Stop on by! (I’ll try to, although I have a Patriot event to do that night).

And Mayor Johnny Roosh will be announcing the Mayor’s annual (?) MOB party very shortly here, after prolonged negotiations.  Watch this space (or, y’know, a space somewhere in the future from this space…oh, y’all know how blogs work, right?)

And sometime in late spring/early summer we’re still looking at “MOB Day at the Range” – the long-dreamed-of synthesis of shooting and drinking.  In that order and no other.

Stay tuned on that.

Four Strikes!

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Happy Birthday to The Night Writer, the first family of the MOB and and one of the best blogs that came out of the “Class of 2005”!

Here’s to four more years.  Or, y’know, more, if it pans out.  Y’know.

Overcommitted

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Chad the Elder makes it official; he’s retiring from the NARN after an almost-five-year run.

And the piece is actually a great retrospective, not only on the NARN’s history, but on the thing that’s always made the show(s) unique:

I would hope that most of the time we’ve played the role of serious amateurs on the NARN. I doubt if there’s been much temptation to succumb to delusions of grandeur since doing a Saturday radio show from the catacombs of the Patriot studio in Eagan hardly lends itself to thoughts of grandeur (although when the septic system backed up people did get a bit delusional).

I have wondered for a while how long Chad would be able to balance three toddlers and a productive day job with the Saturday gig.

We’re about three weeks away from our fifth anniversary – which, when I step back and say it, blows my mind.  In 18 years spent doing one kind of radio or another over the past (gulp) 30 years, I never had a job (or in this case, “job”) last more than two years, to say nothing of five.  Which isn’t bad, for an enterprise that most of the NARN cast gave between three weeks and a year, way back when.

Anyway – all the best, Chad, and here’s hoping we can keep things running until your calendar frees up just a tad.  It’s been five great years…

…although I can’t help but wonder if he’s skipping out to avoid some karmic justice.

Today’s Mission

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

Apparently, none of King Banaian’s relatives have the chops to get on Top Chef.
Anyway, today’s job is to get one Deb Banaian (presumably related to King) onto Survivor.

OK.  I can get behind that. I’d draw the line at Rock of Love.

I Must Have Had More To Drink Than I Remember

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Joel Rosenberg remembers things that I just don’t.

Technology Marches On

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

“Casual Sundays with Mr. Curry” by “MLP” is a great blog.

But it’s always been missing…something.  I didn’t even notice, for years…

…and now, it’s fixed!

My friend Fran just taught me how to link.  Turns out it was slightly easier than learning how to use a spoon.

I am unstoppable now.

So we hope!

My Nomination…

Friday, November 14th, 2008

…for “Post Title of the Month”…

…is right here.

Class Warfare

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

When I say “righties, please keep this in perspective”, this is what I”m talking about – Joe “Learned Foot” Tucci at KAR writes:

For those leftybloggers out there trolling for a little schadenfreude, that’s all I got. Sorry. He is my president. He was elected, not selected. Somewhere in south Chicago there isn’t a village missing an idiot. My happiness is not dictated by who’s in office. I’m still an adult, and you’re still a spittle-chucking rage-addicted child. What Nihilist said.

And what did Nihilist say?

Now we conservatives are free to adapt the tactics of the left, to abandon reason and make inflammatory proclamations with regard to our new chief executive.

I want to be first. I want to say something so antithetical to the beliefs of the MoveOn, Kos, Olberman nuts that it will give them a taste of what they put us through for eight years. Here goes.

Tonight I say a PRAYER for our new President-elect, Barak Obama. I hope GOD will guide his decisions and give him the strength and wisdom to lead America forward. I also PRAY for our leaders in Congress, that GOD may watch over them too. I realize that this may be too much for the nuts to bear, but tonight I PRAY for them too. To paraphrase Jeramiah Wright (sort of):

GOD bless America? Yeah, what the heck! GOD bless America!

What they said.

“As a camel beareth labour, and heat, and hunger, and thirst, through deserts of sand, and fainteth not; so the fortitude of a man shall sustain him through all perils.”

Friday, October 17th, 2008

And perils I will surely suffer as I begin a year long swim in this soup of fecal frivolity as I serve in full farce as Mayor of the Minnesota Organization of Blogs.

I submit willingly to any and all chicanery commensurate with this lowly office.

To that end, I hereby recognize those that paired my nickname with a female personal hygiene product as I had not previously sampled this delightful couplet. I am forever in your debt for this grand discovery.

I thank those that voted for me, especially those who leveraged their vote by proxy. Your corruption is equaled only by my gratitude.

To my opponent, I honor her for her good sportiness and recognize her patriotism in the face of pandemic liberalism.

And I will remind you my MOBster brethren, that the enemy is not within.

Above all, I would like to thank Mitch “Capo Di Tutti Bloggi” Berg as without his gracious and unprecedented invitation to sully his brand with my musings, not more than a few of you would even know who I am.

But now as I stand on high, lifted by your very will to this lofty throne, I am in receipt of confirmation of a notion I have heretofore kept in confidence to my bosom.

That I am truly better than all of you.

Before You Do Anything Else Today…

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

…get over to Kool Aid Report and vote for JRoosh for MOB Mayor.

Margaret “Vaya Con Friedman” Martin is a capable enough blogger – but her past associations render her judgment suspect.

Vote early and often.  Open corruption is openly solicited.

Show Us The Power

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

We here at SITD Central are happy to note that our assistant publisher, JRoosh, has made it through the primaries to the final general election for Mayor of the Minnesota Organization of Blogs (MOB).  He’s running against Margaret “Vaya Con Friedman” Martin, of Our HouseMinneapolis Crime Watch, and some low-production-value remedial-spelling-class rantblog whose name eludes me at the moment.

Now, over the years I’ve tried to remain above the fray – partly because as a MOB founder it’d be unseemly of me to use my boundless influence and gravitas unfairly, and partly because as one of the MOB’s Capi Di Tutti Bloggi, it’s really irrelevant; what the left thinks Dick Cheney is to Dubya, I (along with Chad, Brian, King, Ed and John) really am to the MOB.

But these are “interesting” times, and they require the kind of leadership that only a cold-blooded bully-pulpiteer can provide.  So I beg of you – race over to Kool Aid Report and vote for Roosh – preferably once from every computer to which you have access (and feel free to use co-workers’ machines when they’re away from their desks, too.  Coffee shops?  Sure, them and the library too!).

Martin has pulled to an early lead, presumably drawing the votes of every Anti-Strib reader who isn’t too addled from snacking on lead paint chips to operate a mouse.

And remember – the Mayorship of the MOB is a vitally important job, which directly impacts the coverage of issues provided by the most important alt-media group in the state, a man (or, maybe someday but not this election, a woman) who has direct control over MOB blogs’ approach to the news.  Really.  Steve “Mister Furious” Perry and Karl “I’m So Angry I’ve Soiled Myself” Bremer say so!
