The Dayton Jamdown
By Mitch Berg
Govenor Dayton, by all accounts, is considering issuing an adminstrative fiat that would unionize daycares.
Senator Roger Chamberlain writes:
As many of you know the governor is considering signing an executive order to unilaterally unionize thousands of private sector employees.
It is unwarranted and unnecessary. It will increase costs and kill jobs.
If you do not want this to happen, give him a call; encourage others who use daycare services or run a day care to do the same.
Here’s the Governor’s contact information.
If there’s one thing the budget impasse showed us, it’s that the Governor can take a hint, if it’s big and broad and unmistakeable enough.
Over at True North, Tom Steward covers the issue.

From the True North piece:
The impetus for the unionization drive is providers who receive state subsidies for children of low-income families. In other states with childcare provider unions, dues are collected from state subsidies payments. It’s unclear whether non-subsidized providers, who say they account for the vast majority of Minnesota’s daycare workers, would have to pay fair share fees.
So it’s a scheme to unionize low paid, low skilled workers and pay their increased wages/benefits with public money.
Unless the SEIU affiliated union screws the workers by taking their dues and doing nothing for them. SEIU has been accused of doing this in the past. Unions who represent workers with negligible skills are known for doing this because as little as the union does for them, they don’t have the option of walking away from a job that pays anything above the minimum wage.
Union leadership still gets its percs. Andy Stern meets with Obama, SEIU workers mop hospital floors for $7.50/hr.

I’m sure Mitch has seen this, but for everyone else:

I went to the comment section of the Star-Tribune, and even the left wingers there opposed this. I know this is highly unscientific, but the ratings on the comments…something like 215-3, people favoring the comments talking about how stupid this would be….forcing unionization on home day care providers.

One of the biggest things is…..daycare costs, what? $12,000 a year right now? Imagine those rates going up because the provider now has to pay the AFL-CIO for the right to own a business.

Dayton is just pissed that the teacher’s union (70,000) is outnumbered by Minnesota Permit to Carry holders (86,000), and wants to try to boost the numbers of the former.
You owe it to yourself and to your state to keep him from doing so. May I suggest a carry class? 😉
