The State of “Liberalism”, 2006

By Mitch Berg

Ward Sutton – of whom it can be charitably said “he’s better than Ken Avidor” – on this year’s campaign:

Two gay jokes and a portrayal of Christians as idiots (And please don’t bother saying “noooo – that’s what Republicans are thinking”). Has anyone noticed that there’s been vastly more gay-bashing “Humor” from Democrats than credible Republicans lately? How must that play at “Stonewall DFL” meetings? “We’re doing it for your own good?”
The Dems may “win” this election (although anything less than a forty-seat pickup in the House and ten in the Senate is a defeat, really, given the way this election should have gone for them), but I think this shows why they’re going to lose the nation, sooner or later.

Dems bash gays and blacks because they can get away with it. I’m surprised there wasn’t a minstrel panel in this.

    Where’s the gay jokes Mitch?

There is one joke about Republicans who were aware of Foley and kept it hidden to protect their majority and there is a joke about the irony of an administration that’s filled with closeted gay men which, ironically pursues an anti-gay agenda.

    That’s not gay bashing.

As for the portrayal of Christians as idiots, that’s another false charge. There are something like 2 billion Christians in the world. This isn’t a commentary on the 2 billion, it’s a commentary on the small percentage of those that believe like this portrayal – well portrays.

The irony is that I can identify by name each person in thoses panels. I know someone EXACTLY like them. Maybe the reason it bothers you is it hits so close to home.

Read more carefully, Doug. I didn’t say “bashing”. I said “jokes”. Tittering about gay people. Is a person’s sexual orientation just a part of their personality, or is it something to be slung about for political gain? Given that everyone doing the slinging is Demcrat these days (see my Coleman link?), I think we know the answer.

And since the City Pages and the media only portray that minority…

The CP, the media, and most of the left thing the notion that a Christian would get guidance from their spirituality is the stuff of jokes – as we saw in the “cartoon”. No other side is apparent in the CP’s coverage (or much of anything else). The context of Christianity – especially of the sort of abiding belief that the deeply-religious Christian has, which engenders things like a belief in spiritual guidance – is the butt of a lot of ignorant, bigoted giggling. (Vide Michele Bachmann’s statement that God wanted her to run for Congress; a big joke to non-evangelicals, but makes perfect sense to the rest of us. So what do we see in the media?
The irony is that I can identify by name each person in thoses panels. I know someone EXACTLY like them.

Er, yeah. That’s why they’re called “stereotypes”; you take the characteristics of a small group of people and apply them broadly across everyone remotely like them! The CP did it, you’re doing it, the Democrats have been doing it throughout this campaign!  Every rank bigot I ever knew could say with a straight face “I’ve met  n****rs exactly like the one in thet thar joke!”, or “Yep, Indians can be all right, but 90% of the Indians I’ve met have been lazy no-counts…”.

I have no doubt you can say the same about any group that arouses your bigotry.
Maybe the reason it bothers you is it hits so close to home.

    Convenient, but wrong.

    Mitch said,

“Read more carefully, Doug. I didn’t say “bashing”. ”

Oh. I’m sorry Mitch. When you said,

“Has anyone noticed that there’s been vastly more gay-bashing “Humor” from Democrats than credible Republicans lately?”

I thought you meant bashing. My mistake.

“the Democrats have been doing it throughout this campaign!”

Uh huh… and Republicans haven’t right Mitch?
