The Tackily, Trendily-Clothed City

By Mitch Berg

On October 23 – next Tuesday – the Saint Paul School Board is going to hear yet another attempt by a group of well-connected “youth” “anti-war” “activists” to get the Board to bar military recruiters from Saint Paul campuses.

A little bird sent me their internal email:

NOTE: The “adult” peace and justice movements MUST stand in solidarity with our youth who are challenging the militarization of their schools!!!

That, of course, is hilarious stuff.

At the last meeting I attended, the “anti-war” group included perhaps three high school kids, and well over a dozen adults and/or college kids.

“Standing in Solidarity?”  They’re standing in substitution!

But I digress:

So far, the StPaul School Board has IGNORED YOUTH VOICES on the issue of military recruiters being given free rein.

Actually, they’ve given the YOUTH VOICES attempt after attempt to sway the Board – largely because at least two members of the board, Ann Carrol and Tom Goldstein, seem to more or less favor the idea of barring recruiters from the campuses, career fairs and so on.

Which, if the author of this email is any indication, might actually benefit the military:

Too many of our kids are being CHANNELED into the military–especially youth of color & low-income youth in inner cities & rural areas are being TARGETED by recruiters.

Largely because they, traditionally, join the volunteer military in vastly greater numbers than the white, upper-middle-class children of liberal parents – the ones that make up groups like these.

They are offered NO OTHER CHOICES–NO trade schools or apprenticeships, NO help going to college–just “join the army”.

 Really?

So when you go to a “career day” or a “college fair” at a high school, it’s a chimera – nothing but booth after booth of military recruiters stretching from wall to wall?

High school kids?  Anyone know about this?

Hm.  Big charges.

Worth looking into.

No that it has to be said, but the military is the best thing for an 18 year old. What better options would they have?

I have a large numbers of friends and relatives in the service or have been in full time in the not too distant past. Not one regrets it. The ony regret is me not being one of them.

  2. Chuck Says:

Ahhh, KFAI. The best music on Twin Cities radio (will be listening to them this afternoon) and the worst moonbats…..assuming Air America is off the radar.

Tuned in one night to left-wing news. They had proof that all of MSM is controlled by right wingers. Their proof was coming up with obscure stories that may or may not have been true, but they said should be featured on MSM newscasts, and were not. Hence the right wing control.

Replace “right” with “left” and you’ve just described the average Salem network Hugh MedPrager show.

  4. Mitch Says:

    Tim,

    Joking, right?

Show me a mainstream media outlet that’s taken a non-left position on abortion, the Second Amendment, the war, taxes…

  5. Terry Says:

Lefty’s assume that the purpose of a free press is to promote social progress. They think this is an unbiased point of view.

  6. Bill C Says:

Replace “right” with “left” and you’ve just described the average Salem network Hugh MedPrager show.

The difference being, the average Salem Network Hugh MedPrager NorthernAlliance show has NEVER purported itself to be “balanced”. THEY FREELY ADMIT WHAT THEY ARE.

The MSM? Don’t make me laugh so hard, I’ll pull a muscle.

i was in high school as recently as 5 years ago. The fairs were extremely college-driven, and only one or two military booths were usually there, out of maybe 15? The military ones gave out the best swag though:)

  8. BradC Says:

C’mon Tim, if you’re not even going to try…..

  9. nate Says:

St. Paul has few enough people of color graduating from High School, it would be a shame if they were grabbed by colleges looking to fill color and gender quotas, then left to sink-or-swim in “ethnic studies” hoping to graduate with $80,000 in student loans and no job.

Can’t we at least offer students the option of going to school and getting paid for it, while learning a skill and also building a retirement account?

“Show me a mainstream media outlet that’s taken a non-left position on abortion, the Second Amendment, the war, taxes…””

Where mitch gets to decide what A) a Main Stream Media Outlet is, and B) what a non left positions is.

    Let’s try my theory A:

“”Show me a mainstream media outlet”” FOXNews

  11. Terry Says:

“Show me a mainstream media outlet thats taken a non-left position on abortion, the Second Amendment, the war, taxes”

That is a pretty hard case to pursue. How about something more quantifiable, like the campaign donations and voting records of the people who produce, edit, write and present the newspapers of the biggest 50 cities in the country as well as network & cable news intended for a national audience.

  12. Mitch Says:

Where mitch gets to decide what A) a Main Stream Media Outlet is, and B) what a non left positions is.

Two minute penalty for gross obtusion!

“”Show me a mainstream media outlet”” FOXNews

Right. OK, now put the talking points down, and answer for the Strib, the PiPress, MPR, NPR, ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, the Times, the Wapo, the AP, Reuters, Bloomberg…

    Any ol’ time here.

  13. flash Says:

You said “Show me a mainstream media outlet”

‘a’, as in singular. I can’t move on to B, until I can get confirmation of A. You can say Uncle anytime.

I don’t deny the fact there may be bias out there, and I won’t deny that it is more Left than Right.

You need some serious garage time. Might make you feel better *smile*

I see how this is done…

‘a’, as in singular. I can’t move on to B, until I can get confirmation of A. You can say Uncle anytime.

I can’t get to uncle until we’ve established grampa.

You need some serious garage time. Might make you feel better *smile*

    At last, full agreement.

  15. Master of None Says:

I don’t deny the fact there may be bias out there, and I won’t deny that it is more Left than Right.

Then provide an example of A) the media outlet and B) the bias.

  16. nerdbert Says:

Mitch, how do you count the WSJ? The opinion pages and editorials are pretty firmly right on the issues you mention, even while the reporting is very lefty.

Still, nothing self identifies “the media” as noting that their political donations are over 9:1 to the Dems, while the public at large is nowhere near that. Given the sample size and these results we certainly can’t call “the media” a normal profession. (Now, just who, besides Swiftee, will get that joke?)
