Special Session

By Mitch Berg

Joe Doakes, no longer of Como Park, emails:

Governor Walz plans a special session of the legislature to help Democrat fundraising efforts.

He doesn’t say it that way, of course.  He says it’s to pass gun control legislation in the wake of the most recent shooting. Knowing Republicans are unlikely to agree, Democrats plan to continue using the atrocity to dun their supporters for donations.

“If nobody had guns, nobody would get shot.” Sounds simple, right?  But its First Order Thinking. It’s simple alright, too simple.  It ignores human nature.

Second Order Thinking asks: “Take away ask the guns and what will Bad Guys do? Sit quietly painting landscapes?  Bake cookies, write music, go sailing?” No.

Google “knife attack.” The Bad Guys will not sit quietly, they will substitute a different tool to do their evil, like the mass stabber at the Michigan Walmart. But this time, there will be no armed citizen to stop them.

Take away knives and Bad Guys will use clubs.  Take away clubs and Bad Guys will use the very stones themselves, as Cain slew Able.

The problem is not the guns, knives, sticks, or stones.  The problem is the Bad Guys. And Democrats have no intention of solving that problem.

It’s too profitable.

Until we control human nature, weapon “control” will always fail.

And trying to control human nature has led to imponderably greater evils than we’ve seen.

Try to take away guns, what will the good guys do?

  2. Scott Hughes Says:

I heard today that Mpls, St. Paul, and Brooklyn Center are going to push the legislature to negate State preemption and allow the cities to write their own gun control laws, with their intention of banning “assault weapons”.

  3. John "Bigman" Jones Says:

Scott, I bet it’s a plot by public employee unions to get more members. After all, somebody will have to man the border checkpoints searching cars for smuggled assault weapons, right? Checkpoint Sunray on 94, Checkpoint Lilydale on The Practice Freeway, Checkpoint Choo Choo Bob in the Union Train Station, and many others all keeping the city safe from Deadly Black Rifles. Think of the union dues!

Ask Shinzo Abe how that worked.

In the wake of the Floyd riots I decided to purchase a handgun. I had to obtain a permit to buy a handgun from the police in Burnsville.
    Here are the
    Purchase/Transfer requirements
To apply, you must meet the following criteria:
Be at least 21 years old.
Be a U.S. citizen or legal alien.
Provide a current Minnesota driver’s license, Minnesota ID card, or passport.
Fill out the Minnesota Uniform Firearm Application/Receipt Permit to Purchase/Transfer.
Submit the application to your local police chief or county sheriff.
    Not be a fugitive.
Not be the subject of a restraining order.
    Pass a background check.

I passed and provided all that and bought the handgun. So where are all the felons, underage thugs, crazy transgender persons getting theirs?

One thing that ought to be noted, per the old adage that “when guns are banned, only criminals will have guns”, is that sometimes, the criminals are in the government, and the same government that put COVID patients into nursing homes to recover is the one you’d have to trust. So a hard no on that one, especially after the history of the 20th century, where the Nazis, Bolsheviks, Maoists, Khmer Rouge, Ottomans, and others all used gun control to disarm the people they wanted to kill. It is, really, as if murderers and thugs working for the state don’t want to be shot any more than the rest of us.

Also worth noting is the reality that the areas where legal gun ownership is the highest have the lowest gun homicide rates. Huh, wonder why that is? Maybe it’s because prospective murderers and thugs don’t like being shot any more than the rest of us?

I’m detecting a theme here. Regarding the crime Walz is thinking of, here are some things that can be done:
    1. Churches need to have a safety team, and ideally, they should be armed. Per the MPPA, they can be if the pastor allows it, even in childrens’ areas.
    2. Churches need to have an emergency evacuation plan.
    3. The state needs to end its ban on conversion therapy. Maybe instead of poisoning kids and lopping off body parts, we need to simply tell them that it’s a good thing to be their birth sex.
    4. Teach the John Woo grip to all gang members. It’s saved countless lives.

Well, it’s spared the lives of many intended targets. People downrange, not so much.
