Failure To Unpack

By Mitch Berg

SCENE:  MInnesota DFL headquarters.  Inga “Lucky” CARROLL (acting assistant chair of the DFL while on temporary leave from her day job as Head Meme-Buffer at “Minnesotans United for All Liberal Causes”), Secretary of State SIMON, House Minority Leader Melissa HORTMAN, progressive influencers Edmund DUCHEY, Moonbeam BIRKENSTOCK, Gutterball GARY and Avery LIBRELLE, and Senate DFL Communications manager Evan Micah BRYAN are gathered in a conference room as undocumented domestics fetch beverages and change garbage bags.

CARROLL:   So – not much went right in this last Presidential cycle.  Orange HItler even got within four points in Minnesota (group looks angrily at a sheepish SIMON).   So – before we get to what we did wrong, let’s talk about what we did right.

HORTMAN:  Well, we called them “white supremacists” a lot.

CARROLL:  Good.

LIBRELLE:  Racists, every one of them!

BRYAN: Anti-LGBT!

DUCHEY:  Misogynist!

BIRKENSTOCK: And Fascists! (Murmurs of assent)

GARY:   Nazis! (Thrum of excitement)

CARROLL: So – Republicans are all racist sexist misogynist Nazi fascists.  So – did it work?

BRYAN:  And, most importantly, do we continue using this as our primary, if not only, messaging going forward?

(Mixture of skepticism and assent from the group)

LIBRELLE:  Wait – this just came in from the national party.

(Video comes up on the screem)

BRYAN:  Hey, its Ken! (points at Ken MARTIN, chair of the MNDFL, currently running for chair of the Democrat National Committee)

CARROLL:  OK, so that’s a solid “Yes” on the “message going forward” thing.  Next order of business…

(Papers rustle)

So was it misogyny when McCain-Palin lost, too? Or is that only for Harris-Walz and previously Dukakis-Ferraro?

And certainly we can’t attribute Harris’ loss to being a Commie with a Commie running mate, or both of them being as dumb as a brick.

I’m looking forward to Mitch’s reporting from the meeting of Simon, Walz, Ellison, MNSC Chief Justice Hudson, Former Speaker Hortman, and all of the DFL Party folks where they game plan the Court’s response to the MN House GOP’s newest lawsuit against Simon.

They are laughing their heads off. “Can you believe those schmucks, expecting to get justice from Democrats appointed by Democrats to protect Democrats?”

  4. SmithStCrx Says:

MNSC can only be so blatantly partisan before SCOTUS will feel obligated to take a Case. Sure, the current trend is to let State Supreme Courts make the final determination on State Constitutions, but that hasn’t always been the way it works, and a Partisan twisting of pretty plain language makes for an easy lesson.

Also, it keeps the issue in news and with the GOP bringing it up they at least get first crack at the messaging. They’ve largely been on defense in the Media. This turns the tables a bit.

It may take a while for the DemoCommies in MN to figure out – if ever I guess – but this seems important.

I think I’ve figured it out.

I’ve been watching the US confirmation hearings and something very deep has shifted.

It’s more than just the kinds of people being appointed, it’s bigger than a ‘vibe shift’… but I couldn’t figure out what it was.

It’s the revolution eating it’s own.

Even Democrats are having their eyes opened as they watch their heros from the last few decades try to tear down the people who COULD have made the Democrats great again… People who SHOULD have been their next generation of Democratic heros.

RFK Jr and Tulsi Gabbard stand out as great examples, and long time Democrat power brokers like Bernie Sanders are trying every trick to destroy them, every weapon, all the things that USED to work, and it’s blowing up in their faces.

The Revolutionary Old Guard are trying to eat their own children, and are being devoured by them instead.

These senate confirmation hearings are highlighting the fact that MAGA is actually a unity movement, with the best of the Republicans AND the best of the Democrats, taking the country forward together and leaving the decrepit old guard behind.

The Democrats in Minnesota will keep going to the same well of racism and misogyny as long as it works. And it’s working in Minnesota.
Sure, a couple of Statewide candidates had closer calls than they hoped for in 2022, but they still won pretty safely.
Our US Senators probably have their jobs until they promote into an Administration, they choose retirement willingly, or G-d calls them home and they leave feet first.
Sure, the the US House Seats are evenly split, but even CD2 appears to be a safe DFL district and is no longer up for grabs. That could all change in 2032 after Minnesota losses a Seat, but that’s years away.
The Minnesota Senate and House have gotten somewhat swingy, but the GOP tends to capitulate in the end when poor negotiating runs into the reality that the Minnesota electorate doesn’t like shutdowns and will punish the GOP for a DFL Governor’s intransigence or incompetence. Sure, a few members here or there might lose their seats and the DFL might lose their Majority for a cycle, but those poor unfortunates are merely the collateral damage while the Caucus Leadership comes from safe districts.

Heck, Harris still won Minnesota, so the messaging still works for that too. Minnesota Democrats are doing their part to help the greater cause.

Now, if the electorate shifts, and the GOP starts carrying legislative majorities for more than a single election cycle and they can pick off something like the State Auditor or Attorney General, then the DFL might start to change their toon. (SoS and/or Governor, especially with a brave Legislature could be a game changer.)

It is somewhat interesting to see the lack of self awareness at the national level, but the moderators and candidates are well within the echo chamber (I’m unaware of a Chair Candidate that comes from a competitive State). It’s no surprise that they fall back on their playbooks that work at home. And even 2024 was close in most regards. The GOP majorities aren’t overwhelming, and while every swing State did swing Red, nothing was a real blowout. I don’t fault Trump for claiming a mandate, but it’s not convincing to the opposition.

Now, if the GOP can shock the world and expand their majorities in 2026, then more Democrats will start calling for changes within the Party. OTOH, if they retake the House, 2024 will largely be discounted as a cyclical swing.

I hope Ken Martin gets the gig. He’ll be just as effective on the national stage as Gov. Knucklehead was during the campaign without the Esme Murphys of the world providing air cover.

Or as written about on RedState The Democratic Party Wants to Die

This actually raises a question. Not that I want them to, but how does the Democrat Party recover from this? I mean, it’s well documented that the most radical elements in an organization are often able to define themselves as the best or elite or “true-est” members that everyone else should defer to if not obey. These Democrat radicals are saying that what they need for 2026 is more of the same that didn’t work in 2024.

Or, maybe there’s the leadership of the Democrats and the “real” leadership behind the scenes. I dunno. It is interesting to watch.

I’m pretty convinced that the MNGOP grew a pair and are doing everything within the hamstrings that the MNSC put on them by ruling to violate the state constitution and throw their weight into the legislative branch. Remember guys and gals, the 40B seat is still in play and Wickstrom has a better than average chance to win. I put my money where my mouth is on Saturday and knocked doors for him for about three hours. Had some interesting conversations with traditional DFL voters and I don’t think that seat is as safe as the party thinks. The ones that claimed that they were not voting for a Republican, I asked them to do one thing, before they made their final decisions; to look at all of the new taxes and fees that will go into effect in 2026 and then ask themselves why these would go into effect AFTER the elections were over. I added that in addition to all of the fraud that Walz has ignored until he got caught, with the squandered surplus, that Timmy campaigned on giving back, then reneged, they will be putting the state into a deficit.
