Compare And Contrast

By Mitch Berg

From a Trump rally last night

The decline of the American military is a serious problem.

Crude but merciless satire may not be the solution.Β  But hopefully it helps lead us there.

The two most dangerous things to the long term continuation of this country are the National Debt, which is perpetrated by BOTH political Parties because the general public continually says “gimme, gimme, I need, I need,” and the destruction of the US military, which has mostly been perpetrated by the Democrat Party.

I read a fair amount of military sci-fi books written by actual veterans. They generally predict bad things near term due to the perceived weakness of the American military in particular and America at large more generally. While that may be exacerbated for narrative reasons, I think it’s grounded in truth and our current reality. The good news is that most of the authors subscribe to the theory that hard times create strong men (used gender inclusively, though yes, the military characters skew male). They generally predict that America will get its collective head screwed on straight and rise to the occasion. It just really sucks to get there. Usually WWIII, with Taiwan and South Korea being invaded. Australia gets at least partially occupied. Europe typically has to deal with imported Muslim extremists.

Personally, I hope it doesn’t have to get that bad before we fix the issues.

I’m old enough to remember Full Metal Jacket being 100% an anti-war film. Likewise, in the same era, was A Few Good Men, by Aaron Sorkin, based on his play of the same name. While the military has been increasingly feminized, and not in a good way, I know there an increasing number of citizens who believe Colonel Nathan Jessup was correct when he roared : β€œYou can’t handle the truth.”
