A Discourse On Berg’s Fourth Law
By Mitch Berg
MITCH: Go Timberwolves!
CRITIC: But hey, Mitch – since when do you care about pro sports?
MITCH: Outside the Bears, Cubs and Twins?
CRITIC: Right. Since when?
MITCH: Since never. Don’t usually care. But I DO care about having fun, and being in a place where one of the teams is doing well is kinda a blast, even if you don’t care that much about the sport. See also the NDSU Bison.
CRITIC: But you haven’t been a loyal Timberwolves fan!
MITCH: Yep.
CRITIC: That makes you a fair weather fan!
MITCH: Dang skippy it does. Why waste time on losers?
CRITIC: But you’re a Bears fan.
MITCH: Yep. And they’re going to the Super Bowl this year. Or next, if that doesn’t work out. The weather is *always* fair, here.
CRITIC: But doesn’t this violate Berg’s Fourth Law?
MITCH: Close. But here’s the statutory technicality: I’m not saying “they’re gonna win!”. I’m being hopeful but pessimistic. So we’re good.
CRITIC: That don’t make no sense
MITCH: Shut up cheer. Sheesh.

I can certainly echo the perspective of this post. My utter lack of general interest in pro sports and even local sports teams (unless they’re winning, natch 😉 is, however, tempered when certain players show class while enduring their time here in MN.
In this case, Karl-Anthony Towns. I really appreciate that he has gone out year after year for the last 9 and just played hard and didn’t create controversy. I mean, heck, he doesn’t act bitter about the newest name in town, Anthony Edwards, grabbing all the points and the headlines. Good luck to all them ‘wolves, but especially Mr Towns.

Everyone’s a critic. That’s okay. I am not a fan but I follow the Wolves (my preferred team is Milwaukee) and I’m happy about what’s happening – they’ve been sad sacks for most of their history and it’s always fun to have a winning team in town. And Anthony Edwards is a both a tremendous talent but also a funny dude – telling Charles Barkley on national television to “bring ya ass” to Minnesota was highly amusing.

I believe we may have found why the Bears WON’T win in the next year or two. 😉

Towns should realistically be one of the leagues most likable players. Always classy and respectable on and off the court throughout his whole career.
