Shot in the Dark

Scenes From The Gun Safety Renaissance

As the Minnesota state legislature, led by the no-way, no-how insane Nicole Mitchell, meanders toward passing a “safe storage” bill, I went out to try to take the community’s temperature on the issue.

I started out at a Menards. There was a line of people in various gang colors, lined up waiting for new safes to be rolled out of the back room. The attendant, Lars “Schmidty” Schmidt, said they were down to just a couple left, and the truck with more wasn’t due until Tuesday.

Things were getting a little edgy, so I went to a Cabela’s.

It’d be a little threadbare to say “I was shocked”…

…but I was.

I kid you not, the line of gang members trying to buy gun safes to comply with the “safe storage” law ran out the door.

This is where the story gets a little dicey – honestly, i can hardly believe I saw this.

One guy was driving away with his new safe when two youths walked up to him in the parking lot, stuck a gun in his face, and jacked the pickup

And then as they were driving away with the new gun safe, another car blocked them in, and three guys got out and carjacked them. They drove off with the safe, leaving three other gang members outraged, perplexed, and with no way to keep their firearms safely locked up.

All of this is as true as I can make it.

That’s not rigorously controlled peer-reviewed scientific evidence, Mitch, that’s just anecdote. Proves nothing.

For REAL evidence, you must take cite a study of all the people who died by gun death in Minnesota (569 per article) and find the most shocking example (4-year-old accidentally shot himself). Then make an illogical leap of faith pretending that if the little boy’s gun was locked up, the other gun deaths would have been prevented, too, gang bangers, suicides and all.

Okay, sure, nearly half of all gun deaths are suicide but a different study says suicide is a sponteneous decision and if we could delay the act by as few as 10 minutes, that life would be saved. Therefore, keeping your gun in a gun safe that takes more than 10 minutes to open could save you from suicide. Surely that’s worthwhile? Maybe. If the suicide gets help. Except most gun suicides are old white men who’ve lost their jobs and wives and have nothing left to live for, but are too proud and too stubborn to seek mental health counseling. 10 minutes of delay won’t change that.

A gun safe that takes more than 10 minutes to open? Fat lot of good the gun will do in a home-invasion robbery. The cops will be there before you get the gun safe open. Or the mortician, more like.

No, Mitch, the only way to sell this idiot idea is by lying about it. Luckily, we’ve got Democrats and RINOs aplenty to do it.

Ask yourself, how many times have you been to a friend, neighbor or relative’s house and seen a gun safe with the door wide open?

Perhaps they lock it when away for the weekend or on vacation – but for the most part too many people use the safe as a very heavy, very expensive gun cabinet.

The proper storage and handling of firearms is every gun owners responsibility – but people are people and a good portion of them are lazy, careless and stupid.

And the lazy, careless and stupid passing of laws is not going to change that.

    John,
Who are the RINO’s on gun issues in the Minnesota Legislature?

My daughter went to Vermillion CC in Ely in 2003-2004. Students could bring their rifles and shotguns, but had to check them in and out at the student union office. During the day, when there are as many as three people in the office, those six gun safes, were all wide open. I’m sure that’s changed, but my main point is how will the state’s dictatorial gun laws, affect enrollment at those schools? The DemoCommies will surely alienate their benefactors at Edumacation Minnesota.

Smith, not all RINOs are in the legislature, some provide Democrats cover for stupid ideas in other forums.

Sorry boss, I could not disagree more.

The six or seven Karens who run Education Minnesota (who by the way used to be named either Karl or Kevin) dictate DFL positions and do not tolerate divergence from their personal opinions.

I would assume that Vermillion CC no longer allows the evils of firearms upon its premises or will soon no longer be in existence.

There is a rumor that trap shooting is Minnesota’s fastest growing high school sport, but I can assure you this is (or will soon to be) not the case.

One might argue that suicide prevention is denying the person their rights to MAID (Mechanical Assistance In Dying).

Safe storage is unlikely to reduce accidental deaths. Experience has shown that each increase in gun control laws has resulted in increasing crime and deaths.

Take note of who was in the legislature that passed this bill. You can be assured that no one will own up to voting for this law when it fails.
