  1. Better quote would be Deputy Chief Dwayne T Robinson from the first Die Hard movie, as the FBI Special Agents Johnson and Johnson (no relation) fall from the sky in a ball of flame-

‘They’re gonna need some more FBI guys, I guess.’

  2. Kerm, there is 57 Democratic Senators, 2 Indies, and 41 Republican ones. Last I checked there wasn’t any Democrat ones.

I checked both articles and they talk about Democratic Senators. Maybe the Democrat ones are all across the hall from the Republic Senators

  3. Flash,

“Democrat” and “Democratic” are both perfectly acceptable adjectives to refer to members of the Democratic party. If someone says “he’s a Democrat”, everyone in the world knows what you mean.

“Republic” is a completely different word. If you call someone a “Republic” senator, it makes no sense.

The Democrat/ic yakking about “call use DemocratIC” is the same as a cop or a parent going “look at me – LOOK AT ME”; it’s a way of trying to assume control and belittle the recipient.

And anyone that’s used the terms “Neocon”, “extremist” or “wingnut” in non-clinical terms, ever, would be ethically obligated to leave the whole subject alone.

  4. No, Mitch, the person is describing the party to which they belong, and as such, is a noun, and they are describing themselves by affliliating with that noun.

Frankly, though, you know darned well why you use Democrat rather than Democrtic, and it’s because the Republicans decided a while back to NOT use Democratic, in an attempt to strip the reference value of the word democratic from the party itself. YOU might not have had any active discussion about it, but you still did it, despite knowing pretty well that it was pidgeon English at best. BTW, that’s not some vast conspiracy theory, Roger Ailes told his news staff to NOT use Democratic but rather to use Democrat, why do you think he did that? Do you REALLY think he was trying to correct their usage of the English language? Seriously? This was simply another hive-mind side-long slap at Democrats, and nothing more.

BTW, 6 Republicans are retiring too, so I guess we’re going to need more Republican Senators, and given that the percentage on the Republican side is higher, it seems like the streak is anti-incumbancy, rather than anti-DemocratIC.

Just another aside, because you insist on using Democrat as a noun, I’m going to insist on continuing to call Republicans ‘Lickens”, both in part because it is an equally stupid unnecessary contraction, and equally because it is so extraordinarily apt.

  5. Just to be clear..

    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/dcnow/2010/02/dems-and-gop-find-common-ground-in-retiring-senators.html

The mood is populist, and damned tired of business interests controlling Washington (as well as concerns about debt of course), but most of all, they are tired of the venom, spite, vitriole and one-sided spin (which is highly akin to deceit). The fact is, Mitch, you want to make some sort of point about Democrats retiring, it might be best not to try to do so when Republicans are retiring at a faster rate , and because the mood of the country is so manifestly tired of ‘business as usual’ in Washington. Neither party, not the Democrats or the Lickens, is exempt here, and your one sided view of it only underscores the fact that they are mostly tired of YOUR kind of approach and disengenious presentation.

  6. No, Mitch, the person is describing the party to which they belong, and as such, is a noun, and they are describing themselves by affliliating with that noun.

Doesn’t matter. Everyone knows what everyone means.

Frankly, though, you know darned well why you use Democrat rather than Democrtic, and it’s because the Republicans decided a while back to NOT use Democratic, in an attempt to strip the reference value of the word democratic from the party itself.

Yeah, that’s what I was told by a bunch of Democratics, after a solid 20-odd years of referring to the “Democrat” and “Democratic” parties interchangeably without anyone saying “boo” about it.

No, Pen. That whole “Republicans decided…” bit is a Dem shrieking point. I reject it. Everyone knows who one means with either term.

BTW, 6 Republicans are retiring too, so I guess we’re going to need more Republican Senators,

And we’ll get ’em. Conventional wisdom says LeMieux (FL),
Brownback (KS), Bunning (KY), Bond (MO) and Voinovich (OH) should be pretty much cakewalks for the GOP; Gregg (NH) is the biggest danger of a flip.

In the meantime, in addition to Brown flipping the former Kennedy seat, the conventional wisdom has it that Hoeven will get Dorgan’s seat, the Bayh seat is very much in play, and the GOP is polling much better than usual for Burris’ seat. Dodd and Kaufman’s would seem to be the only “gimmes” for the Dems.

and given that the percentage on the Republican side is higher, it seems like the streak is anti-incumbancy, rather than anti-DemocratIC.

You can read it that way if you’d like. Please feel free to support that claim with any empirical evidence. The polling so far – both in terms of public opinion polls and actual special elections – shows that that yes, incumbents have gotten flushed; they all happen to be big-spending Democrats. The polls in Illinois, North Dakota and Indiana show that the GOP seems to be doing better at harnessing that sentiment. Feel free to find countervailing data.

Just another aside, because you insist on using Democrat as a noun, I’m going to insist on continuing to call Republicans ‘Lickens”, both in part because it is an equally stupid unnecessary contraction, and equally because it is so extraordinarily apt.

You’ve tried that. It didn’t catch on, because when you say or write “Lican”, it makes you sound like you’re having a stroke. As opposed to “Tic”, which makes one sound pithy and on top of things.

  7. your one sided view of it only underscores the fact that they are mostly tired of YOUR kind of approach and disengenious presentation.

So Christy is in Trenton, and Brown is in DC, because of me?

    Wow.

  8. Oops. I mis-wrote.

Of the Dems that are retiring, North Dakota is generally considered a lock for Hoeven – and I was amazed to read that most of the pundits think Delaware leans Republican, with Cook calling it a “Safe” flip for the GOP.

Kentucky, Missouri and Illinois are all broadly seen as “tossups”, with the former two perhaps leaning GOP at this point. Ominously for the Dems, Boxer’s seat is a lot more in play than it should be, and some are saying Reid’s seat in Nevada is leaning GOP.

Simply counting retirements isn’t going to get you much of an answer.

  9. ‘Kerm, there is 57 Democratic Senators, 2 Indies, and 41 Republican ones.’

Bad grammar aside, I hadn’t thought about that since the flipping of the MA Senate seat, but this makes candidate Obama’s remark about 57 states clear. He was talking about the future.

For the White House, there are 57 Senators that the One has to pay attention to, and everybody else can go screw. He just said states when he meant senators.

  10. “Democrat” and “Democratic” are both perfectly acceptable adjectives to refer to members of the Democratic party. If someone says “he’s a Democrat”, everyone in the world knows what you mean.

People know what I mean when I say “Die Hard was awesome in “‘The Sixth Sense,'” but that doesn’t mean I should call Bruce Willis “Die Hard” in regular conversation.

I thought you were an English language guy, Mitch. In “He’s a Democrat,” Democrat isn’t an adjective. Democratic is the adjective, Democrat is the noun, as it has always been, except with the Republican Party for some reason. They are called the “Democratic Party,” and calling it the “Democrat Party” is incorrect, because that is not its name.

Besides, I thought you used “Democrat” as an adjective because it was shorter and thus easier to type. It’s definitely not because you’re being childish.

  11. Mitch lied: ““Democrat” and “Democratic” are both perfectly acceptable adjectives to refer to members of the Democratic party.”

It’s the price Mitch has to pay, Flash, to retain his following of slavering extremists. He *wants* to be all civil, dontcha know, but the Mitchketeers demand their hero be just a little assholier than thou.

S’OK. Clown takes up the slack on the other side of the rope.

“Republican,” “wingnut” and “far-right kook” are all perfectly acceptable and may be used interchangably too.

  12. “everyone in the world knows what you mean.”

With the exception of a few small minded partisan hacks.

Only a retard would claim their are NO democrats in the US Senate.

Peevish Boy, why must you and Flush make such fools of yourselves on such a regular basis?

In your heart you know I am right>

  13. his following of slavering extremists.

    I have a following?

    And they slaver?

    Woot!

“Republican,” “wingnut” and “far-right kook” are all perfectly acceptable and may be used interchangably too.

Or at least Clown has always used them interchangeably. Close enough for government works. Or the circus.

  14. Mitch lied:…..

WOO HOO!!!! Does that the mean the f**kstick is now banned?!?!?!

Actually, I hope not. Mangy Clown is the textbook definition of “Useful Idiot.”

  15. I thought you used “Democrat” as an adjective…

Because I never gave it that much thought. Like I said before; it wasn’t until I’d been referring to the “Democrat party” for 20-odd years that anyone seemed to care about it.

And now, suddenly, it’s a grave insult.

Must mean the Tics have no bigger problems facing them!

  16. This one from peev jumped out at me: “The mood is populist, and damned tired of business interests controlling Washington”

Business interests like…the NEA, SEIU, ATLA, etc etc etc…

Man wasn’t it impressive how the health insurance industry was manhandling all those pussies in Washington a few months ago? Hell, they almost got legislation passed that would have locked up health care/insurance in America to be FOREVER and irreversibly stuck in the private sector. right? RIGHT?

  17. “Just to be clear..”

Yes, Peevish Boy, it is painfully clear that you worship The Obama.

But next time practice it more so you don’t screw it up:
    “Let me be clear…”
    “Let me be clear…”
    “Let me be clear…”
    “Let me be clear…”
    “Let me be clear…”
    “Let me be clear…”
    “Let me be clear…”

Now run along to PenisBlog and practice being a good little lemming.

  18. Hans Solo would never say that. He sees danger and shoots to neutralize it. No matter what the doctored footage shows. A member of the Democrat party would engage in negotiations, involve the UN and in short order, get his head blown off. He would never ask for more of that type.

  19. Buzz-
Greedo was a Democratic. He thought he was in the right, and following the rules.
Look what happened to him 🙁
    Just ain’t fair.

  20. I must state for the record that I have not “slavered” since I stopped using illegal substances (long ago). A Democrat, however, is still a Democrat, and no amount of tics will change that fact. Now Clownie has been “slavering” on this site for several years. Go figure.

  21. Hey Mitch, you might want to consider removing the search function from your site. It makes it too easy to make you look bad.

Mitch lied: “ike I said before; it wasn’t until I’d been referring to the “Democrat party” for 20-odd years that anyone seemed to care about it.”

Here’s Media Matters complaining about the wingnut party’s use of “Democrat Party” in August 2006. Mitch’s first use of “Democrat Party” on SitD is in Nov. 2006. Around the time the slur was in heavy rotation in the wingnutosphere. Angryclown is only surprised it took Mitch that long to read the directive from Party headquarters.

    http://mediamatters.org/research/200608160005

  22. Clown,

Actually, before I take out the search function, I should find a way to add the four and a half years of this blog’s content that I haven’t been able to import into the blog (the parts before, as luck would have it, November 2006, oddly enough), back into the blog. And find references to the hundreds, maybe thousands, of postings to email discussion groups, discussion forums and even USENET groups going back in 1994. Or archives from my first talk show (1986/87).

Media Matters complains about everything, but I recall pedants yapping at me about “Democrat” back as far as 2004. And I had the same responses back then.

–> “If that’s the biggest problem the Tics have, you must have a nice life”.

–> “” I’ve been doing it for years, and don’t give a rat’s ass about your purported conspiracy”

    –> “”Get a life”

    That kinda sums it up.

  23. Angryclown will be gracious enough to stipulate that you’ve always been a boor on this point, Mitch. He merely suggests the SitD sermons about civility and whining about name-calling is just so much hot air.
