The Spirit Of The Season
By Mitch Berg
This fellow – a Doctor of Intersectional Grievance Studies – is sure nuff gonna show his neighbors what’s what:
Where to start:
- Since Joseph and Mary went to Bethlehem to “be enrolled”, they were pretty much the opposite of “Undocumented”.
- He apparently thinks there’s a significant faction of “southern” Christians who believe Jesus was a European caucasian and that the Holy Land is in Alabama.
- The good Doctor of Intersectional Grievance Studies apparently missed the memo that, if you’re a Christian, Christ came to save everyone regardless of race or much of everything else.
Having spent at least eight years getting a PhD in Intersectional Grievance Studies, it’s understandable he’s not clear on the nuts and bolts of Christian theology – and, being an academic in a field built on fomenting social nastiness, that he’d post a sign and a Tweet so deeply steeped in toxic condescension.
It’s forgivable.
CORRECTION: I’m sorry, I read that wrong. Hef’s not a Doctor of Intersectional Grievance Studies, but rather a PhD in some variety of Theology. He also describes himself as a “Pastor”.
I’m gonna go out on a short, sturdy limb and guess that either he’s the “pastor” of a very sparsely-attended Episcopal parish, or that he’s more of a professor these days.

Nah! He belongs to the same mysterious church as the “reverands” Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, who, btw, still hasn’t paid his back taxes.

The guy’s a jerk. He’s obviously trolling his neighbors. I bet their response is going to be to invite him over for sweet tea and pecan pie.
Can’t you get these ‘credentials’ on line somewhere??? Give’em some money, make a few clicks and wham! you’re a pastor.

He’s a Cedarville and Dallas grad, really from a lot of the same theological areas as I hail from–conservative evangelical Baptist, really, closing in on fundamental. Now serving a “United Church of Christ” denomination in Jupiter, Florida, and with this transition–conservative baptistic evangelical to liberal restoration church–I would guess he’s got a certain amount of anger on his mind. He’s out for blood, specifically the blood of my area of the church. Some things I think are erroneous on his part (that he, as a Dmin and Mdiv, ought to know).
1. Jupiter is part of the peninsula of Florida, which is really not part of the Deep South. It’s further south, yes, but culturally very different.
2. Even Floridians know that pastors at least say they serve Jesus.
3. If he’s actually paid attention to Song of Solomon, he’d be aware that the preferred body shade in the region was pale–Jesus’ hands and face and feet were likely very tan, but not the rest of his body.
4. And then the issue of documentation. Even beyond the issue of census and taxation, Joseph and Mary were about as documented as they come, knowing that their heritage went back 1000 years to King David, and then all the way to Adam.
So my take here is that, given his Cedarville and Dallas degrees, he’s not just wrong, but also lying. He knows better, but says it that way because it plays well among his constituency.

I read the sign and thought, “Yeah, so? What’s your point?” Still not clear.
Smug snarkiness is not persuasive. It is infuriating.
You would think a Man of God would act better.

I hope Bubba has some words with this creep.

Cosmic, thank you, but I don’t know that he’d listen. He’s arguing from his spleen more than his brain, as far as I can tell. But what I can do is simply point out the truth, and those who are not fellow “spleen-thinkers” may have a chance of seeing this in light of basic honesty and fairness.

Cosmic, I tried, but no response, and I didn’t even get banned. Sniff….
