Manufactured Crisis

SCENE: MItch BERG is waiting for some delicious brisket at his favorite BBQ joint. As he orders, he notes Avery LIBRELLE walking in the door. He ponders bolting out the kitchen, but it’s too late.

LIBRELLE: Merg!

BERG: Uh, hey…

LIBRELLE: Shut up. Ron DeSantis is imposing a fascist censorship regime in Florida! He wants to imprison any bloggers that criticize him!

BERG: It’s a bill with one sponsor – its author, who is most likely its only supporter in the legislature. It won’t get a hearing, much less pass either chamber, much much much less get signed into law. If you hear about it after this coming week, it’ll be from people on the left who are desperately trying to keep it alive to promote the “DeSantis is literally Hitler and even worse than Trump!” canard.

I mean, there’s a grain of sense to it – there are plenty of “bloggers” and other social media tweeps who don’t reveal who’s paying them to write.

LIBRELLE: Blah blah, blah. Hey – I wanna order!

GIRL BEHIND COUNTER: Certainly, Ma’a…er, S… (Looks at BERG, in a cold sweat)

BERG: No idea.

LIBRELLE: Do you serve cricket meal loaf”

GIRL BEHIND COUNTER: Uh, no.

LIBRELLE: What the…

BERG: (to Girl behind counter) I’ll take my order to go, thanks. .

  1. DeSantis’s book crackdown, 20 books by Jodi Picoult just got banned at one county’s schools.

DeSantis didn’t “Ban Jodi Picoult”. One county (mis?)interpreted the guidelines and decided to remove her books. This doesn’t mean DeSantis “banned all of her books”.

“The removal list includes Picoult’s novel “The Storyteller” about the granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor who meets an elderly former SS officer. It contains some violent scenes told in flashbacks from World War II and an assisted suicide.” –https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/03/10/ron-desantis-book-bans-martin-county-jodi-picoult/

Apparently the Florida state legislature and Gov DeSantis don’t want elementary school children exposed to the concept of assisted suicide. Those HEARTLESS BASTARDS!

“When South Florida writer Brad Meltzer learned that a Pennsylvania school board had banned his books “I am Rosa Parks” and “I am Martin Luther King, Jr.,” he knew he couldn’t ignore it.

Since when does Ron DeSantis control what books are allowed in PA school libraries?

  2. DeSantis bans CRT and gender ideology from public schools.
In Minnesota, the Walz-appointed Education Licensing Board forces public school teachers to teach CRT and gender identity.

  3. Every sane person wants some books kept back from public schools. The question is who decides which books get on the “keep out” list?
The people squawking the most about “our democracy” are the people who want to keep democracy far, far away from books and curriculum in the schools funded by tax payers.
If you have a child you are free to allow him or her to read whatever you like. This is about people deciding what books may be read by other people’s children. Sounds pretty dodgy.
The Left’s ideas about public ed seem to come from the 1930s. Progressive, well educated teacher faces a room full of the children of coal miners and farm kids, whose parents are suspicious of any book that isn’t the bible.
