The headlines tell a heart-rending story: new Florida congressman, heralded as the first “Gen-Z” member of Congress, can’t afford an apartment in DC.

If an intellectual titan like Reich is yakking about it, it must be worth a look. And, sure enough…:

When he’s sworn into office next month, Florida Democrat Maxwell Frost will become the first member of Generation Z to become a member of Congress in U.S. history; an auspicious milestone for the 25-year-old and the House of Representatives at large. For now, though, the onetime progressive activist-turned-legislator has more immediate concerns on his mind — one shared by millions of his generational peers, as well: finding an affordable place to live amidst skyrocketing house and rental prices.

And I couldn’t help but think – the story seems familiar.

Sure enough – four years ago, Tide Pod Evita had the same exact sob story:

One year ago, you could find Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez working behind the bar at Flats Fix, a small taqueria near Union Square. Come January, you will find her in Washington D.C., representing New York’s 14th District as the youngest woman ever elected to Congress.

But just because she is making history, doesn’t mean she is making money. Ocasio-Cortez recently revealed that she is currently unable to rent a D.C. apartment.

Of course, being in Congress has its perks – an upper middle class salary, connections, power. AOC’s not exactly “the one percent” just yet, the movement is, uh, emphatically “up”:

YearAOC Net Worth (estimated)
2019Not Available
2020$100,000
2021$200,000
2022$350,000

She – and Frost, for that matter – appear to be on the track to cash out juuuust fine.

But I’m wondering – is this going to be a biennial tradition? The media bemoaning some young, “progressive” pols brief brush with DC rental reality, on their (unstated) way to a sinecure, a federal pension, a “commentator” job at MSNBC, and connections that lead to millions of lifetime wealth?

I think Mr. Frost’ll pull through somehow.

  1. OK, so we’re having so many bureaucrats in Washington DC, housing has become unaffordable.

Got a simple solution for that. Fire a bunch of bureaucrats and massively reduce federal government spending. I’m sure Tide Pod Barbie and Mr. Frost will get right on that.

  2. That young, leftist twat, if he finishes at least 1 term in office, will receive a lifetime medical insurance plan literally unknown anywhere in nature.

    Covers everything; costs nothing.

And they want me to feel bad he might have to sub lease a condo for a year?

By next year, he’ll be wearing bespoke suits and Bruno Magli shoes, and smoking the best weed Humboldt county can provide.

    Fuck him.

  3. By his own admission, he ran up debt in his run for Congress, leading to his bad credit score. He’s a risk in the eyes of landlords.

I’m just waiting for the proposed solution to this manufactured crisis: Federal-level imposition of rent controls. I’d argue the cost of living in D.C., Virginia, and Maryland is high in part due to the rent control laws already on the books.

My proposed solution: Barracks. If you’re going to be a servant of the people, you can enjoy the same creatures comforts afforded to the grunts.

Reich and Frost miss the larger point: The Founding Fathers never intended Congress or the Presidency to be a career. If Mr. Frost does not have an alternative source of income sufficient to support his foray in politics, then he is just another mouth sucking at the government teat.

  4. Plenty of enterprising congress people have slept in their offices. He could go to any REI or other camping supply store, grab a cot and sleeping bag, and park it for a month in his office until he gets his first paycheck and can afford an apartment.

But since he’s apart of the most entitled generation (after the boomers), he would never dare to stoop to that level.

  5. i will take ian’s suggestion one step further

    every member of congress is a resident of their home state so by definition, every member of congress is a temporary visitor to washington;
therefore every member of congress must live in the barracks and eat in the mess hall while in dc

no per diem for hotel or meals
don’t care if you can afford a mansion you’re not allowed to live off base
    because that would be divisive
    it wouldn’t be equitable
    it wouldn’t be fair

  6. And the dude’s claim that he ruined his credit rating by running for congress goes completely unexamined by the “journalist” who wrote the story. Yep, accept politicians self reporting of their finances on face value.
Better my sister in a whore house than my brother a journalist.

  7. This is what the Wikipedia says about Frost. Viva democracy!
    Personal life
Frost’s biological mother abused crack cocaine during her pregnancy with him. Upon meeting her for the first time, Frost learned that he had “trembled” as an infant due to drug withdrawal. He said, “it wasn’t her fault”.[33]
Frost speaks Spanish and English.[16] He is a jazz drummer and plays the timbales.[8][13] His nine-member high school band Seguro Que Sí (Spanish: “of course”) performed in the parade during Obama’s second inauguration in 2013.[8][34]
In December 2022, Frost said he was denied a rental apartment in Washington, D.C., due to a “really bad” credit history. He said his credit rating was bad because he “ran up a lot of debt running for Congress for a year and a half”.[35]
FEC disclosures show that Frost received almost $1 million in support from disgraced former billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried’s Protect Our Future PAC.[36] In December 2022, the U.S. government indicted Bankman-Fried after alleging that he gave investor money to progressive political candidates, among other fraudulent crimes. 9. I can’t help noticing that morons like Reich, don’t seem to have a problem with elected thieves significantly increasing their net worth, often by methods that is peons would go to prison for, by the end of their second year and certainly when they become lifers like Pelosi and Schumer. I can’t find the article now, but Pelosi and Feinstein have frequently profited from legislation that they were involved in. Mad Maxine Waters got her husband’s bank bailed out in 2008, yet the Congressional Ethics Committee, run by Dems, didn’t do nuttin about it. Along with Bernie Sanders and Fauxcahontas Warren, funneled campaign money to family members.

Agreed, Bigman. I think the cot life would go a long way to keeping Congressional sessions short (and “emergency” sessions almost unheard of), thus minimizing the time our “life, liberty, or property” is imperiled.
