Renters Remorse

A friend of the blog emails:

These amendments wouldn’t have changed my vote, but I wonder if it would have even passed if rent control as defined through the council’s amendments had been on the ballot?

Not likely, which is how it should have been in the first place – not passed.

I ask, as if in a vacuum, will this teach voters a lesson, change how they vote? The answer to that question is also not likely.

Indeed, I’d wager a shiny new quarter that this will be used by the hard left to push for even more “progressive” city councilbeings.

Yup, I’m seeing people who are “eager” to door knock for more left leaning council members to get all these people out, apparently either oblivious that the more left leaning they are, the more beholden they are to the corporate interests or these “door knockers” are also in favor of corporate interests.

It was amazing to watch the “vote yes” on rent control push, so obviously a big developers dream, knowing that they had the city council in their pocket to get what they wanted. It is amazing how the vote yes crowd and the majority of the city council has no interest in what this means for small landlords and owner occupied multiplexes.

And the Council President’s hyperbole of “nothing is getting built” so we need to give these developers everything. No, lots of things were getting built before you and the rest of the council decided it was a virtuous thing to put rent control on the ballot. It’s only been less than a year. Let the city and the developers suffer for a while with the consequences of their actions.

I’m being overly optimistic thinking that would help- we can’t let the city actually suffer the consequences of the voters actions, because it is never about the voters, the constituents, or even level headed city planning. It is always about who the donors are, who is in charge, and social engineering.
