Sign O The Times

And then there were six, again: Kendall Qualls has jumped into the MNGOP Governors race.

And the MNDFL’s Ken Martin’s response?

So…for the 2022 Governor’s race, Ken Martin is still running against…

…Trump?

Which is interesting, because it wasn’t so long that his party’s line was completely different:

Why yes. Indeed.

I suppose it beats trying to run on the DFL’s record…

  1. You have two choices, citizen, a beating so severe you die, or losing all of your money and starving to death. Which one?

  2. The strategy is obvious — the metro dems need independents to reassemble the coalition that gave Biden his win in MN.
So tie Walz to Biden. In 2020, independents in MN were about evenly split between Trump and Biden. The most recent poll I can find shows that independents have turned against Biden, hard. Last September Biden’s approval/disapproval with independents in Minnesota was running 43%/64% https://www.mprnews.org/story/2021/09/23/poll-biden-walz-below-50percent-approval-mark
Biden approval/disapproval rating nationwide among independents nationwide is currently about 29%/66%

  3. Should be amusing to watch this group compete for the nomination. They gotta ring all the crazy bells to enamor the base and bust through the field to take on Walz — but then undergo a cognitive 180 to have a chance in the general election. Tough act to pull off.

  4. I keep hearing from conservative pundits that it will be a bloodbath for the D’s this fall — when I look at the collapse of Biden’s support among independents I can see why they say this.
Biden took independents by 9 points over Trump in 2020. Biden’s job approval with independents is now 29%, with 63% disapproving.

  5. Mr Qualls gets a plus one for a great personal story.

Minus one for supporting Trump—although to be fair supporting Trump is the default Republican position.

Minus one for not knowing the governor has nothing to do with local policing or defunding the police. It seems to me many of the GOP candidates are unsure of what the office they are running for does. Jason Lewis running for Senate said the same thing.

It would be nice if these various GOP candidates just didn’t play spin the wheel and run for whatever office happened to be open. They just go from losing one election to the next. It would be good to get some fresh faces and non-Trump supporters that me as an independent could consider.

  6. This morning, I heard the results of a poll taken last week. Their results on independent voters, confirm their very hard turn away from Pedo Joe. What shocked the pollsters most, was a question posed to female voters, about their view on a Trump vs Biden presidential run. 46% of those that voted for Pedo Joe, would now vote for Trump.

  7. Bosshoss, the Dems only like to talk about Trump as a negative force in American politics.
Biden’s gained votes over Trump almost only from white, college educated men. Compared to 2016 Trump made gains women and Hispanic voters.
I have a college degree, but I don’t count any friends with college educations since I retired & lost touch with workmates, so I don’t have personal experience with this. It may be that that demographic suffered the least under the covid economic contraction in 2020.

  8. That grinning lackey has a face like Feng Feng’s boyfriend Swallwell and lying moron Adam Schiff, that begs to be punched.

  9. The Dems have convinced themselves that Trump is fatally unpopular. Not so, Trump got more votes than any GOP candidate in history in Novemeber 2020, despite the nedia, print and broadcast journalism, big tech, big business, the trade unions, academia, and the federal bureaucracies engaging in an orgy of Trump hatred for four years. The GOP picked up seats in the house, and would probably have a senate majority if Trump had kept himself out of the Georgia election.
The idea that the same voters in MN who turned out for Biden and against Trump are going to vote for Walz in 2022 is a dream.

  10. Let’s see, a moderate district like the third congressional district, rejected Mr Qualls. Now he thinks he can win a state where the core of the population in the major metropolitan areas is more liberal and the rural voters are even more conservative.

  11. Let’s see Emery, you ignorant Bot, I live in the third and it’s not moderate. It’s gone full bore commie because of all of the left wingers moving into Bloomington, Eden Prairie, Plymouth and Edina. These REAL racists, you know, the people like you, voted for the rich, trust funder white guy over the black man that created his own American dream.

  12. The MN GOP traditionally offers up moderate businessmen as gubernatorial candidates. The purpose of a primary is to choose the candidate with the greatest chance of winning while supporting the party’s core values. Who knows who that candidate will be. If the choice of the MN GOP to run against Walz is trumpier than Pawlenty or Johnson, that’s probably because Minnesotans are trumpier these days.

  13. Emery,
Paulson probably lost the 3rd because he was too moderate, especially on the 2nd Amendment and Environmentalism. Why vote Democrat Medium Light when you can vote for the same thing. It also didn’t hurt that a lot of voters recognized the Philips name from their liquor cabinet.
As to the Governor and Defunding the Police, there’s at least two reasons why it’s relevant for the governor’s race. LGA funding for places like MPLS and Policy dictates from the State. The MN Legislature can pass a Bill, the Governor can sign it, and then the Cities have to follow it.

  14. I really wish Kendall had stayed out of this race this time. I really like what he’s been doing with Take Charge. He should’ve stayed involved in that. In the long run it’s more important. It also could’ve set him up to run in 2026 or 2030.
