To The Shiny Happies

A friend of the blog and fellow Midway resident writes, in re last week’s piece on being shamed by the Shiny Happies for telling the truth about what’s going on in the city:

Saw your blog today. In My neighborhood, we’ve felt like we’ve had ghetto tourists since they started building the stadium. They remind me me the young suburbanites you talked about.

As far as us, we too want to stay here. It’s getting harder.

As I was walking [Redacted] home from school the other day, we were half a block from the intersection where two cars were having a shoot out. They were just a little east of the intersection, so didn’t see it, but definitely heard it.

[Redacted] , somehow, knew it was gun shots. I kept saying it was a car backfiring until all the neighbors came out to check on us. This happened at the end of my alley.

Zillow bought the house next-door to me and now is just letting it sit vacant. So far, one of their storm doors has been removed and the other is broken. I reported it as vandalism, but I anticipate much more happening to the house, which actually was one of the better kept house’s pre-Zillow.

All down University on my side of town businesses are moving, leaving vacant buildings.

I told my family that we still like it here, but my moving criteria is if several houses become long term vacant, then we’re moving.

That’s the point I keep trying to make to the Shiny Happies – it’s not like I’m stating, or overstating, the situation in the city to add drama and gravitas to my life.

I’ve invested nearly three decades in my house, my neighborhood and my city. It’s a little depressing to see it run by people who don’t value those tens of thousands of investments as much as they value their demented ideology.

  1. It’s a little depressing to see it run by people who don’t value those tens of thousands of investments as much as they value their demented ideology.
Demented is correct. None of the politicians in Minneapolis or Saint Paul will admit that the first order cause of the crime wave is underpolicng and the resulting gang activity.
My advice is that you get out while Zillow will offer you a good price, MBerg. There is no light at the end of the tunnel.
Best buy a home in a county outside of Hennepin and Ramsey.

  2. I only have one question for you Mitch: what change are you expecting before you pull up stakes and moving? And the corollary – what change do you expect that will turn the situation around? Reality-based please, because dreams of conservatives winning election in your blighted city are just that – dreams.

  3. The thought of gunshots half-a-block away reminded me of this:

    https://voxday.net/2021/12/07/i-really-dont-miss-it/

Vox grew up in North Oaks, attended Minnehaha Academy high school, trained at the Karate Junction by the fairgrounds, went East to college and now lives in Italy.
He can be an ass but he’s also a keen observer of people and politics.

  4. I told my family that we still like it here, but my moving criteria is if several houses become long term vacant, then we’re moving

Vacant is bad. Totally agree. But rentals are just as bad, just slower and more insidious.

Man, did that hit the bullseye. Thanks for the link too.

  6. From JD’s link:

The cult of nice combined with the left-wing politics, the total unfamiliarity with non-European cultures, and the Scandinavian heritage that prioritizes communal approval uber alles laid the foundation for the perfect storm of vibrancy that has been unfolding in Minneapolis and spreading out as far as Rochester for the last two decades.

What the Scanda-sotans don’t understand is, the countries they came from enjoyed a common racial/cultural/moral society. They shared because they were one people. I don’t know when the first black immigrant set foot in Norway, but the minute he did, it was the end of the Soci@list experiment there.

It’s no different in Minnesota. Black, African immigrants do not share the same morals, work ethic, traditions, religion…nothing, as those sturdy bachelor farmers who’s descendants propelled Wellstoned(!) into office.

But the baked, 100 IQ leftist midwits that inhabit the Twin Cities think that is a feature…because they’ve been taught to hate everything American since pre-school.

jpa is saying the same thing I’ve been saying for the last 15 years; the game’s over; you lost. Time to move on and fight like hell to keep it happening in your next home town.

  7. Mitch, if you wait until several houses are vacant, the “market price” of your home is going to be much lower. Best to get out while you can still get a good price. Of course, right now new homes are way over-inflated, though there seems to be some softening. Buying now will likely be an overpay.

  8. Like the national Dems, the DFL’rs think that the problem is “communications.”
This is crap, but it is what politicians like to hear — “you don’t need to change your policies, you need to explain your failures better.”

  9. Watched the video Joe refers to, and what strikes me is that the assailants are women, as far as I can tell. There is a special kind of sick that impels a woman to attack another woman for reporting sexual assault. Looking at the long hallway and the horrendous carpet, I assume it’s one of the projects?

Looking at the home values, Mitch, I’d get out while the getting is mediocre. Who knows, St. Paul could have a new Richard Hatcher come in and prohibit putting up real estate signs. (yes, real story from Gary, IN in the 1960s to stop “white flight”–obviously it didn’t work)

  10. Leighton Woodhouse shows how “defund the police” is directly tied to the increase in crime in cities across the country:
    https://bit.ly/3yegzxR
Basically the more succesful the “defund the police” activists are, the more crime increases. This happens because the “defund the police” acrivists believe that police interaction with citizens is the mechanism used by white supremacists to oppress black people. In fact the science (such as it is) shows that police interaction with citizens is inversely related to the number of crimes. The more policing, the fewer the crimes.
The “defund the police” activists are mad. They believe the exact opposite is true, once you understand that the crime is oppressing minorities. It would be white supremacy that is responsible for some thung breaking your teeth while he robs you.
