Truth Is More Boring Than Reality
By Mitch Berg
Where did all the ammo go?
People hoping to get out the range without having to take out a second mortgage to afford to replace their stock are asking (as I might have, before all my guns fell into Superior).
The conspiracies are…colorful:
- Companies are stockpiling their product to drive up demand
- Ammo plants have shutdown completely
- Ammo companies are in cahoots to stop selling to civilians and are now selling only to the Feds and law enforcement.
- OJ bought all of it in his search for the real killers.
The reality? More mundane:
Spread the word.

Thanks for posting this, Mitch.
I actually knew that Federal was busting their asses making ammo. My buddy that founded DPMS Panther Arms, told me months ago. He and Jason know each other very well.

Fun fact; most of the machines making ammo at the Federal factory up there in Anoka were built during WWII. That’s when Americans built stuff to last.

I saw a custom rifle Randy built in 2002 for a neighbor on his block. It was a thing of beauty. A bolt action (30-06 if I remember right) built for a left hand shooter hunting Mule deer in on the family farm in Williston ND. The action was really smooth and quiet.

A buddy recently invited me to the range. He had a couple of boxes of .22’s to shoot up. Remington Thunderbolts in the little green boxs of 50, price sticker $1.68.
Yeah, he’s had them a while. Bought them at the gas station when he was in high school in a small rural town. Only a few needed to be fired more than once to get the bang.
$0.03 per shot is a lot easier to stomach than $1.00 a round for new stuff in the larger, more popular calibers. Hard to justify: spending a day at the range or making the car payment?

Pig,
Yea, he built a few custom rifles. Just before he sold the company to Freedom Group, we walked next door to the Del-Tone Gun Club and fired off about 100 rounds through one of his newest .308 caliber rifles. Having fired both AR15 and M16 rifles, his were superior.
