Onerous Usurpations

When I posted the social media companion pieces to yesterday’s post on the grotesque parody of “science” that played out over the shopping weekend, I had a lot of people respond “It’s time for restaurants to throw their doors open and dare Keith Ellison do to something about it”.

Here in the Metro, of course, Ellison wouldn’t have to do squat. Ramsey, Hennepin and Dakota county authorities would yank operation licenses so fast it’d look like a confetti parade. In Greater Minnesota? Probably much less so.

But what if they did?

In Michigan – one of a small selection of states with worse governors than Minnesota – a restaurant chain is adjusting its gloves:

Y’know, I’ve been doing a little more takeout lately – much of it at a inner-city restaurant run by immigrants who spent their time during the riots up on the roof, visibly armed. I’ve been leaving ’em 30% tips, too.

But I suspect if we organized a mob of shoppers to support restaurants defying the shutdown, that might have some clout.

Hmmmm.

  1. The way this is supposed to be done, in a representative democracy, is that legislators will meet, call expert witnesses, and debate the topic, then vote, with all sides agreeing ahead of time to honor the vote.
So MN (like much of the US) is no longer a democracy. It is, in fact, a third world shit hole run by an one time public school wrestling coach.

  2. Just so you will know, bars at the airport are open. Science proves one cannot catch Covid in an airport.

  3. Yeah, but you need an airplane ticket to get through security to reach the bar.

Spirit Airlines, one-way, Minneapolis to Las Vegas, $18. Oops, sat in the bar too long drinking, missed my flight. Bummer.

That’s cheaper than the Uber will cost to get my drunk a$$ home.

  4. So, one of the key contributors to spread, per the CDC, is people going to restaurants and bars.. but you think in the midst of the worst point in this pandemic, the thing to do is defy public health orders and act like a mob..

I guess that’s why we get these kinds of stories…

    https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/police-beaten-bowling-manager-asked-patrons-wear-masks-74498892?cid=clicksource_4380645_2_heads_hero_live_headlines_hed

This manager was asserting the private property rights of that business owner to require specific attire to use their privately owned facility, and for asserting those rights, he was beaten (as well as someone else who stepped in to help protect him).. THAT’s your mob – and you complain about Antifa(scists).

Clearly, you are in favor of brown-shirted thugs. Also, as we saw in Kenosha, be careful what you wish for, the police just might wind up arresting YOU after you get too full of yourself.

  5. Once again, Peanut Butter conflates debating questionable scientific assertions with committing illegal actions. The bowling alley manager was certainly justified in asking the unmasked patrons to leave. Had they merely been drunk and disorderly in a non-Covid world we wouldn’t be reading the story. As far as Kyle Rittenhouse is concerned, let’s see how the trial turns out. As I recall, after the three knuckleheads got shot, there wasn’t any more rioting.

  6. 2 days late to the party, but:

If a restaurant derives a sizeable portion of its revenue from alcohol, they need a liquor license for the booze dealers to supply them. If they open against state mandates, the state will pull their liquor license. They’ll lose the ability to buy and sell that liquor. When the lockdowns are lifted, I would not be surprised one bit if Ellison and co pull his comfortable domestic abuser stance, and not renew the license. “Now look at what you made me do!”

That and I believe Walz instituted a $25k/day fine for restaurants and bars that violate the order. If a restaurant stays open for a month, that’s $750K in fines. When this is all over, do you think the state will forgive those fines? Hell no.

Walz and Ellison know damn well that every business in the metro that has been closed by his mandates, they’ve got them FIRMLY grasped by the economic testicles, and they’re not afraid to play “smush the tomatoes”.
